Wow, that's all I can say is wow. I just started running again after many years away from it. The first thing I did was go to my local running shoe store and get fitted so I could get the proper shoe fit that I needed. If you've never been properly fitted and I'm talking about stepping on an electronic scale that measures your feet length, width, arches, etc.... then I would highly recommend it. I've been buying size 11D for forever when my proper shoe size is a 10.5 2E. Let me tell you, it makes a huge difference when you find the right fit. I also found out that I have high arches and that both of my feet are exactly the same size. I also found out I need a neutral shoe. All that aside, I tried on shoes from New Balance, Brooks and these Hoka Clifton 9's. I knew ... MoreWow, that's all I can say is wow. The shoes are amazing! I've been suffering from plantar fasciitis and haven't been able to find any relief until now. They were recommended by my podiatrist, and I've seen a lot of nurses wearing them. I shopped online and was disappointed by the styles. They look clunky. I was hesitant to get them for vanity reasons, but I needed help! I ordered them a half size larger because the other brand I've been wearing felt a little small. I thought more room would be better, just to be safe. Well they came and I still think they look clunky but they feel incredible!!! I work 10 and 12 hour shifts on my feet all night long, and my pain level is getting lower every night that I wear them! They run really big, though. They're huge on my feet. I was not thrilled with the price but having a gift certificate I decided why not, my wife has been raving about Hoka shoes for years. My first 2 to 3 mile run was a bit disappointing. I thought these were supposed to be the Holy Grail of shoes but now that I am five runs in and over 25 miles including a very hilly 7 mile trail run I did, these shoes are excellent. At first I thought the ample cushioning was a bit too amorphous, it's there but it's almost too much or doesn't really help me run. And then I started landing on the forefoot more, especially on slight downhills and that's where the shoe really began to shine. I only have myself to blame though for ordering this color. An excellent shoe for running and I'm sure for walking or a job that requires you to be on your feet all the time you're going to love this immediately without any break in time needed.

Great for runners looking to up their distance
12 June 2023

I started using Hoka Cliftons years ago when I began training for my first ultramarathon. I couldn't seem to get past 50 miles a week without incurring overuse injuries before the clifton. A friend recommended the Clifton to me and I was finally able to overcome my mileage barrier. The Clifton 9 has held true to form and provides the cushion I need for long runs without overdoing it. So far, I've noticed that the Clifton 9 seems to have more cushioning but I they don't seem heavier. The tongue and back of the shoe also make the Clifton 9 really easy to put on.Pros:1. Great cushioning, you will notice a difference if you have foot pain from overuse.2. Good light feel for heel-strike and mid-foot runners like myself.. I start to notice a difference in the cushioning level around 220-250 miles. The amazing cushioning comes at the price of replacing shoes more frequently. I was hesitant at first but after dealing with so many overuse injuries I just made the decision to buy nice shoes and haven't looked back.2. Traction. I wouldn't recommend the Clifton for runs on slick and steep terrain. Stick to a trail shoe if you are running in mud/slick rock.

For a number of years I used new balance 847 V3 as my preferred walking shoe. However, subsequent design of the V4 left me very disappointed. I've really enjoy using them on my 5 mile walks around Santa Monica, which I take twice a week. The shoes are so well designed, that I also use them as an every day shoe. I purchased another two pair.

Not Like a Clifton
22 February 2023

I have been wearing Cliftons since version 6 and have multiple pairs of each version. I was excited to try to the new Clifton 9s as I felt the Clifton 8s lacked a little bit of durability/longevity compared to the older versions. My biggest issue with Clifton 9s is the plush cushion. I previously tried a pair of Bondis, which is also a neutral shoe with a plush cushion, but they were too soft for me and made my feet hurt. The Clifton 9s feel similar to the softness of the Bondis. Additionally, the upper is too tight and lacks flexibility of the prior mesh uppers, which can be problematic for those with a wide forefoot. This version may work well for others that like the more plush cushion as opposed to the balanced cushion of the older Clifton models. They have a much different feel than the prior versions of the Cliftons, and I wish they would have just released this shoe under a different model name rather than making these changes to the Clifton model.

The 3 mm Stack Height Increase Gave Me Knee Pain
23 September 2023

The increase in stack height (i.e. amount of foam cushioning) to 40mm has made the shoe unwearable for me. Some runners’ bodies, and I must one of them, process an excessive amount of cushioning by tranfering the force of landing to the knees. I wore the Clifton 9’s for 170 miles. My feet and lower legs felt good, but my knees were sore and they began to catch/pop. Before the 9’s, I wore the Clifton 8 for a year (three pairs) and I did not experience this issue, although my knnes would ache some after a run, but some ice took care of that. I didn’t think the Clifton 9’s were the problem, yet my knee pain got so bad that I consulted a doctor. They could not diagnose a knee problem. I stopped wearing the 9 and went to a “high” cushomed shoe of a different brand (32mm-27mm) and the knee problem went away. I tried wearing (and even walking) in the Clifton 9 again and the knee pain came back. Hence the Clifton 9’s are the problem. I like most everything else about the Clifotn 9’s and I wish that Hoka had left the stack hight at 37 mm or lowered it to 35mm.The outsole of Clifton 9 wore out in about 100 miles. I ran on the underlying EVA (or whatever) for another 70 miles. The REI heel to toe drop measurement in their write-up is wrong. It is 40 mm in the heel and 35 mm at the toe. REI list 32 mm to 25 mm. How can this be when the Clifton 9 got a 3 mm increase in stack height over the Clifton 8 and the Clifton 8 was a 37 mm to 32 mm.

The combination of vibrant colors and a streamlined silhouette gives these shoes a modern and sporty look that can easily be paired with various outfits. I've received countless compliments on their aesthetics, and they make me feel confident and fashionable during workouts or everyday wear. However, the most significant impact the Hoka Clifton 9 has had on me is its contribution to my recovery process. After breaking my foot, I struggled to find a shoe that provided the right balance of support and comfort. These shoes, however, have been a true game-changer. The ample cushioning not only protects my foot during each step, but it also aids in reducing strain and stress on my recovering foot. The excellent arch support and overall stability have been instrumental in helping me regain strength and mobility. Whether I'm going for a walk, engaging in physical therapy exercises, or even participating in light jogging, the Hoka Clifton 9 has been my go-to shoe.

Worth your money

I bought these to see if they were comfortable enough to replace three pairs of Elevon 2's. I tried a pair on locally, but in the local store they only had one color, and it was a color I did not care for. So I ordered this pair online. The front of the shoe seemed wider than my three pairs of Elevon 2's, and I needed something with more room in the front, as each time I wore one of those to the theme park (I am a Universal Studios Orlando annual pass-holder) I would get a blister on the same toe, on the underneath side, as if it was being squished. So I got these in the mail a few days before heading to the park. I was able to wear them for about six hours before getting to the park for three days.
