Honestly I felt underwhelmed when seeing the mach 5 for the first time. I've been running in the mach 4's for about 8 months now and totally loved it. Couldn't imagine the shoe getting much better than the 4, except for possibly a grippier outsole on the bottom that holds up better to high mileage or trails, but it is a quick road shoe so what can you complain about. The profly+ foam added on a nice step up in cushion to the shoe, and it responded a little more snappy than the 4. A little stiffer of a rocker launches and responds to power, and leaves the shoe with a great overall feeling. They also changed the tongue to my liking, and made it more form fitting. I honestly do not know why folks seem to love the Clifton's? My favorite hokas are the Mach 5 series n the torrent series. My only regret w hoka is, I do not like their colors? Pls hire my artist daughter or anyone younger w style sense. Not vibing the colors. Loved a pair of torrent 2 that were navy blue w dark green soles? Bt that's just me?? I also dnt like that by the time u find a style u like? They sold out or replaced so quickly? Bt I guess that's just the way the sneaker industry makes money? I brought my first pair of torrent hoka 2's on sale for 99 bucks bt then had to pay two hundred for same pair n color online at a resale site in Australia!!! I loved the Mach 4 and was excited to see how the Mach 5 was improved. It is a very different shoe, with a softer ride, but still with a great snap when picking up the pace is required. There is something to the "+" in ProFly+ -- it is definitely softer than ProFly and has better responsiveness. The tongue has padding in the right places. I don't find the laces too long and I do not experience the upper cinching too close on the top of my foot. I'm not a wide, but for an average width foot, I have no issues with lacing and comfort. My only concern is the rubberized EVA. My Mach 4s have ~270 miles on them and there is no tread left on the shoe. They still work find on pavement and crushed limestone trail, but I don't wear them when conditions are wet. Given the ... Given the Mach 5s have a similar rubberized EVA, I'm not sure I'll get much more than 250 miles before I relegate them to dry pavement days. This is why I bought two pair -- rotate them so I did not feel like I was burning through one pair too quick.Overall, I love this shoe and it is my favorite daily trainer, especially on days when I have faster paces to hit.

As a triathlete, I run variety of distances during the week and at different times during the trading cycle. Sometimes it's a stand alone 3-6 miler, or 3-6+ right off the bike, or simply a long run day 10-12 miles. Like many athletes, once you find gear that works and you tend to stick with it. For me, I tend like flat (not minimalist) trainers without a lot of cushion and action going on under my foot, so I've been using a low profile shoe for quite some time, and no issues or injuries. However, as a 6'0" - 190 lbs. guy, I just kept thinking "I may need a little more shoe under me, especially for the longer runs." I tried several brands, some of which I've used in the past with some success, and also tried the Hoka Mach 5. Many of these brands, including Hoka have ... However, as a 6'0" - 190 lbs. guy, I just kept thinking "I may need a little more shoe under me, especially for the longer runs." I tried several brands, some of which I've used in the past with some success, and also tried the Hoka Mach 5. Many of these brands, including Hoka have big/thick soles a "rocker" effect. I felt like I was falling forward over the toes of the shoes. Perhaps that's the idea, and I simply don't get it, but it was an awkward feeling for me. The Mach 5 has a larger (and squishier) sole/feel than I am used too, but not the "rocker" feeling. So, I decided to give them a try. And rather than a couple of runs on the treadmill, I decided to commit and just started running outside with them. (No return). I must say that after a few runs I got used to feel and now I really enjoy the shoes/ride very much. I've raced triathlon in them recently, and have another IM 70.3 coming up in September, and I'm looking forward wearing my new Mach 5's for the 13.1 run. Thanks Hoka for producing this product, and making it easy to access them. Cheers!
Disclaimer: Always try out shoes before you buy - individual foot size and measurement can vary greatly. Good thing you're buying from The Running Room and can always visit a retail location! The Hoka Mach 5 is a very comfortable, speed-oriented daily trainer that can double as race day shoes. They're not as propulsive as carbon/nylon-plated shoes, but at the same time offer more stability and comfort, making them great for speedwork training or just everyday runs. They're also priced aggressively for this role. Fit-wise they feature the typical Hoka low heel drop and wraparound comfort with oversized outsole that prevents rolling ankles. I recently switched to Hoka because I wanted a lower heel drop and frankly I wanted to see what all the fuss was all about. I started my Hoka journey conservatively with the Clifton 8 initially. While I liked how soft the shoe was, it was too squishy and lacked any real energy return, especially on my tempo or interval days. That being said I liked them for my long, slow runs. After reading the rave reviews for the Mach 4 I purchased the Mach 5. I received them yesterday and immediately strapped them on today for an 8 mile tempo run. All I can is WOW! These shoes are exactly what I was looking for in a daily trainer or even race day shoe. I was little worried when I first put them on because it felt very soft, especially in the heel. However, once I started running these shoes felt great with the right amount of softness and energy return. I actually found myself running about 30 seconds faster than my target pace in these shoes. For me, these are the ideal non-plated speed/daily trainer/race day shoe.
I have a couple runs on these now and have a good impression of their feel. I run in Cliftons normally. I purchased these thinking they would be a slightly less bulky version of the Clifton. They are not really that, but rather more of a race shoe. When I first put them on and walked around, they felt very cushioned. When running in them, however, they are firmer than the Clifton. I would say about 70% cushion between a tradition running shoe and the Clifton. I'm fine with that, as I like to switch to a race shoe for something different on short runs. However, I will continue to do my normal training in the Cliftons. One word of caution is the tongue. The Clifton has a traditionally shorter/material style tongue. The Mach 5 has a more rubberish/thin tongue that rides higher on the ankle. I notice a slight pressure on the front of my ankle when running. It's not a problem for me, as I wear running sockets that ride a little higher on the front of my ankle. However, I tried and will not wear "not show" socks with them. I have past experience with similar type tongues in other running shoes. No matter how soft they try and make this style tongue, it still makes direct contact with ankle above the sock and creates friction that leads to rubbing/discomfort. These felt that way with no show socks. I tried posting pictures, but they would not load.
I honestly believe this is all because of the Pro Fly midsole in this shoe and hope they never change this. I do think this is one of the most comfortable shoes ever! My first purchase from Hoka consists of this shoe, but I did try 6 other Hoka shoes in a store. This shoe has the best squishy, bounce back feel under your foot that causes an energetic step. Instead of just cushion and energy dispersement, it pushes back up against your foot unlike anything else I have ever felt. The upper is thin, breathable, and hugs the foot perfectly in the right places. I took my wife shoe shopping a week later and after 8 shoes, she also chose the Mach 5. We only wore Brooks for the last few years. For a nurse working 12+ hour shifts this seems to be an exciting experience on ... The Hoka Mach 5 is exactly what I hoped it would be: light, snappy, bouncy, and comfortable - this shoe is fun to run in. The upper feels dialed-in. Like last year's Mach 4, it's easy to get a great lockdown. The tongue is minimalist. The ride feels very different from other Hokas. The Pro Fly + foam provides a pillowy soft "squish" with nice, energetic bounce. I imagine this would be how the New Balance RC Elite v2 would feel without a carbon plate. Other runners have said this reminds them of a more supportive Rebel v2 and that seems accurate. The outsole is identical to last year's model. I burned through 2 pairs of Mach 4s and the outsoles held up fine. I foresee the same with this model. After a few days with this shoe I think it would be a great choice for ... Bottom line: I really enjoy this ride and this is easily one of the best shoes of the year.
I bought these after doing some research to fill in my need of a new daily trainer that can handle longer runs. I was looking for something close to the zoomX pegasus turbo 2 as those are the ideal trainers for me. I'm usually a Nike guy and have been using the Invincible 2 for long runs and racing in the vapor next percent 2. Both of those shoes are incredible and I figured I'd give another brand a chance and be adventurous. I ran 5.5 yesterday and I was shocked how unresponsive these were. I'm not sure if I need to break them in more or if they are defective but there is zero energy return and the shoe forces you to land on the middle of you foot. And as someone who likes to land on the forefront of my stride I was really struggling. My ankles and knees were worn down by the end of my run which is something that I never struggle with. I plan on returning them and getting the peg 40s with that credit. Again, these shoes 100% could've been defective because I felt as if I was running with no shoes on and the foam was almost requiring me to exert more energy opposed to helping me with my run and supporting my joints. I'm not sure if anyone has recommendations or if I should give another Hoka shoe a chance.
