Bring back the Speedgoat 4

I’ll start by saying that I absolutely LOVE Hoka Speedgoats, and I’ve worn many pairs over the years. The shoes I wore for my 2021 Pacific Crest Trail thru hike were the Hoka Speedgoat 4. With the updates to the Speedgoat 5, however, Hoka definitely missed the mark. The shoe has a narrower fit, especially in the toe box, which caused several blisters on just a one-night 22-mile backpacking trip (even wearing my correct size). The heel fits strangely, which also caused giant blisters. And the tongue of the shoe dug in to the top of my foot and broke the skin. Unfortunately, I had to return my Speedgoat 5s to REI. Hoka, please widen the fit and make adjustments to the Speedgoat 6 so that it fits more like the 4.

Comfortable Shoes

These shoes were pretty comfortable right out of the box, but they did need a a little bit of a breaking in time. I wanted a comfortable, water proof shoe to wear when I traveled to France and these shoes were great for that. I purchased these shoes in October, 2023, but didn’t start to wear them for another month or so. It is now April, 2024 and I am sorry to say the vibram tread on the heals is worn down to almost nothing. I do wear them every day and walk up to 15 miles per week. It is disappointing that the tread didn’t last very long because these shoes are expensive and I really like them.

These are the comfiest trail runners I've ever owned but they just don't hold up. I didn't have too much trouble with the tread but the shoe itself does not hold together. These didn't even last me one full season. I have holes in both shoes and the fabric is ripping away from the sole. I live in Alaska and it's super wet and the trails are gnarly here, but I would expect a full season out of any trail runner in this price range.

Great fit and cushioning
3 March 2024

Have been shopping for awhile for new hiking footwear - I have heavier duty boots, but also wanted something low cut and waterproof but lighter weight for travel, light hiking, and casual use. After returning four other pairs of shoes that didn’t work out, I tried these on the advice of a store associate - they were the clear winner! I am a heavier hiker, with wide feet. I usually either need wide sizes or brands that run slightly wider. These have great cushioning, were easily wide enough, and just overall comfortable. Haven’t worn them for a real hike yet (and do not plan to use them for actual trail running) but pretty confident they’ll do great. I’m normally an 8.5-9 in running shoes and a 9-9.5 in boots. I probably could have done either 9 or 9.5, but kept the ... MoreHave been shopping for awhile for new hiking footwear - I have heavier duty boots, but also wanted something low cut and waterproof but lighter weight for travel, light hiking, and casual use. Great pair of Gore-Tex running shoes
28 November 2023

I actually use them for walking after foot surgery. I appreciate the extra space of their toe box, both their support and cushion (i.e. the grip and stability of the Vibram), and the fact that they are rain and snow proof. Also really appreciate the flat tongue and that they are easy to slip into as I do have special needs right now. Definitely shoes that can accommodate “difficult” feet. For Québec they might be not warm enough to wear all winter!

Hoka and REI, a perfect match for me.
6 July 2023

I had the older model of speedgoat and finally wore a few holes in them after miles and miles of adventuring. My first pair were hard to break in and even gave me a blister at first. After that they were great. On the way home from the Redwoods I went by our fav store in Dublin to try a few models of trail runners. I tried on these new speedboats and wow what an impressive improvement Hoka made in these. The top is way softer and no hard spot at the back of ankle that caused a blister on the old ones. The sales associate in shoes was kind and helpful! I on my new Hoka’s and was a happy hiker! I have to say I really love the Dublin store and all the salespeople. Just all around awesome store! Lightweight Hiking Shoe
8 January 2024

I bought these Goretex Speedgoats to replace my seriously worn down Goretex Challenger’s that I got a few hundred miles out of. That specific shoe was an old style and I wanted something similar in color so I went with the Speedgoat instead. It seems as though the Speedgoats sit a little higher off the ground and the back end of the shoe comes up a little higher along the Achille’s tendon. I sized up a half size so that the shoe could accommodate hiking socks which tend to be thicker than regular running socks. I found that with my last pair I got my typical size, but it took quite some time to break in the toe box to accommodate the way my toes splay outwards + the hiking socks. The water proofing is decent, but if the rain is really coming down for an extended ... MoreI bought these Goretex Speedgoats to replace my seriously worn down Goretex Challenger’s that I got a few hundred miles out of. The water proofing is decent, but if the rain is really coming down for an extended period of time, expect that your toes will get wet eventually. The cushion around the edges is pretty soft so if you’re hiking or trail running on terrain involving lots of rocks, expect that the cushion will look gouged out pretty quick. Otherwise, I do really enjoy these shoes. The combination of Dr. Scholl’s tri-comfort insoles with the already excellent Hoka sole makes you feel like you’re on clouds and that 20 mile trek feels like nothing. I would recommend that you get these Speedgoats! Your feet will thank you.

Maximum Comfort, but super squeaky …
16 August 2023

I bought these for two reasons: comfort and having vortex waterproofing. They are super comfortable and solidly waterproof in wet grass and rain. However, after about 30 miles of hiking (not running), the right shoe began loudly clicking and vibrating with each click each step. It was so annoying to me and those I was hiking with that I exchanged them for a second pair. My first hike with the second pair was 6 miles without issue. My second hike was 10 miles and after about three miles in, both shoes began doing the exact same thing. It's like something gets broken down between the layers of the ball of the shoe. It did 't matter if I walked on grass, wet trail, dry dusty trail, or gravel. Same annoying click. I wanted to love these because they are really ... MoreI bought these for two reasons: comfort and having vortex waterproofing. More narrow.
4 May 2024

I bought these shoes last year and wore them out within 6 months. I felt that they were comfortable to hike in last year. It feels like they made them more narrow. I don't know why Hoka is doing this. My feet never suffered in Hoka shoes but I bought and returned the mach 5 as well. I don't see these being comfortable for long hikes unfortunately. The last years brand didn't need much breaking in. These feel a bit more stiff and more narrow. Pretty narrow toe box which makes no sense.

Wanted to love these shoes
10 November 2023

I have never had Hoka's before but I see that they are gaining popularity and these looked perfect for hiking, and I needed new hikers. The first pair I bought were too big, so they do run a little big, the 2nd pair I bought were 1/2 size down but hurt my ankles. They were too tall at my ankles and they rubbed they immediately. otherwise they look like they are sturdy and seemed comfortable. (only tried around the house). The colour is a little industrial looking, I liked them a bit better online than in person. But I feel like they would have been long lasting shoes.....
