Kept on all the time they protect your lens front element from accidents and scratches - all too easy on bulbous wide angles in particular. If you have an accident, it's much cheaper to replace one of theses than a lens. Be careful not to cross-thread it; that's not a criticism, just what can happen with such shallow-pitched, delicate threads. All filters are the same in this respect, really.

Many use a UV filter as a lens protector which has its pros and cons. I use UV(0) filters because I take many photos in locations with lots of blacklight. The UV(0) cuts off strongly just before the main wavelength of blacklight which means all the invisible energy in the UV band are effectively stopped from reaching your sensor. Other types of UV filters allow some wavelengths through. I'm very happy with the performance of Hoya filters and this one is also excellent.

I always purchase a filter to protect my expensive Nikon lenses. The Hoya pro range are excellent quality & I have never experienced any reduction in image quality by using a filter. These are very thin & non obtrusive when placed on the lens. I would highly recommend the Hoya Pro range. Wex prices & service is also just excellent. Delivery is always very quick & well with in delivery times. I cannot recommend Wex photographic enough for their excellent service.

The 3rd I've bought - 2 for my lenses and one for my son's. They're a good balance of cost and quality. Bought this filter, for my partner, to replace a linear polariser which obviously didnt suit the digital camera she has. Massive difference with colour saturation. The blues are deeper and the greens boosted. Well happy with the results!
A multicoated Hoya Pro filter which is ideal for digital SLR and camcorders, protecting the lens from dust and fingerprints and maintaining the optical quality of the lens. I fit this type of filter permanently on on all camera lenses which have a lot of outdoor use. The low profile makes them more suitable wide angle lenses or for us on wide angle zooms . The same size thread on the outside of the filter means the lens cap still attaches to protect the filter when the camera is not in use.
This is just a clear filter without any antireflective coating. For this reason is usable just in few circumstances. I din't realise it when I've read the description but after using it once I've quickly ordered a better one. Don't ruin the quality of you photo with a highly reflective UV Filter.
Polarizers are indispensable. They remove reflections and glare, and yes, they darken the northern and southern sky. They can also serve as an approx. 1.7 stop neutral density (ND) filters. The Hoya may not be the absolute best, but they certainly get the job done at a great price point ! For best results, use sparingly. You can see the effect right in the view-finder and they needn't be "full on" all the time. Be especially mindful with wide angle lenses.
I currently have a Hoya 77mm Pro1 CIR-PL filter and purchased the Hoya 77mm Pro 1D CIR-PL filter (as the earlier Pro 1 is no longer available). I have found that the PRO1D glass surface marks/scratches rather easily, while my original PRO1, which I have had for some years, has virtually no marks/scratches at all. The surface treatment appears to be far less resistant to scratching (despite care taken in cleaning) than the earlier model. Very disappointed.

Coated with whatever wonder-stuff is used to kill reflections without impeding visible light (or at least only impeding it by minute values only detectable by spectro-photometry!), they make sense to protect vulnerable front elements. I would guess old-boys Hoya know a thing or two about optical coatings. Not guaranteed to help if you drop the lens of course, it's sheer luck if they survive that. I'm not remotely convinced they would save the front of the lens in anything other than a light bump but they do mean you never have to clean the front of a £1k+ lens.Occasionally I enjoy a bit of live band and performance photography and if you're bouncing about in the mosh pit you'd be suprised how much salty sweat (I really hope it's sweat) and beer is collected by your lens so I regard these filters predominantly as a sacrificial element. I've always managed to get them clean but if I do damage it then it's just a small cost compared to the cost of stripping down a lens and potentially replacing some far more complex elements. It has no visible effect on colour or contrast so doesn't degrade IQ. Adding another element to the lens will always have a detrimental effect on IQ, but I really can't see it in the images.I use Pro1 filters exclusively and get no noticeable flare or ghosting, unlike some others I've tried, even when shooting sunsets although this may have something to do with using decent lenses with decent coatings rather than an inherrent property of the filter. It's a fairly low profile mount so I don't have to worry too much about stacking filters. It does start to vignette at somewhere between 24 and 28mm if used with the Hoya polariser though.
