I purchased these sandals with great hope, as they are Keens. However, they have a fatal design flaw. The fixing mechanism across the top of your foot is severely flawed. It relies on an adjustable spring on the lace, that is always coming undone. The lace also stretches. Woeful. You don't have to walk far before the sandal becomes floppy, and you need to adjust the lace again, and again. Would not recommend these, and am deeply disappointed at the poor design.

I had a pair of Keen sandals that were getting pretty ragged so I thought I would stick with a trusted brand that had served me well. The Arroyo 2 looked like what I wanted, not a true hiking sandal, but one that was quality built. The first thing I noticed is that my regular size of 10.5 was had my big toe a little too close to the end of the toebox. I went a size to an 11 and that seemed to work. Over the course of the next 2 weeks they seemed to loosen up a bit as expected so I just sinched them up a bit more. After a month of light casual use the slide on the laces of the left sandal only catch on the right lace. The left lace will not stay in the catch. This makes these completely unwearable. If I could give zero stars I would.

I've had a few pairs of this shoe and usually they are quite durable. Most have lasted through multi-month canoe trips but one pair had the soles completely delaminate after less than 2 weeks. I think that pair was a lemon though, since all the other pairs did ok. The insole is always one of the first things to wear out and I'd prefer to have a sandal with a closed heel & toe without an insole to fail or collect sand & mud. The insole also has to be taken out and the mud & sand cleaned out regularly. But in a fair amount of research I have not found a better more durable closed toe & closed heel sandal. The nylon webbing in the leather prevents any stretching, and I had these sandals wet all the time for weeks or months on end and I found they didn't stretch.

Comfortable and sturdy, easy trail walking. However, being a candle, they don't supply any ankle support. So, as long as the trail isn't to rough, they are a great warm weather alternative to hiking boots.
Excellent arch support in size 14D. Toe cap & Achilles tendon coverage combined with thick, hi traction soles keep your feet dry above soggy ground. Superior to any others i've found for strenuous activities. Your feet will thank you.
I needed 'shoes' for a Bali trip. High temp, high humidity, and would get wet. Walked in these 100kms+/week for three weeks without socks. They do require some wear-in (I ended up with a bandaid for a blister - it was winter at home so I didn't break them in before traveling). Walked over lots of rough ground and they provided a surprisingly high level of support and protection. They do squeak when wet and take a couple of hours to dry. Also, they are solid, so are a bit on the heavy side when putting them in your suitcase. Overall these are awesome shoes and are now my summer 'go-to' footwear.
This is my husband's fourth pair of these shoes. The pair I bought him for Christmas, a big wave swept one of his sandals out to sea while he was on the beach. We live in Hawaii, and he wears sandals year round. So for him to burn through a pair of these in less than a year is not unusual. These sandals are great for his wide feet too. They don't seem to cramp his feet when he wears them. The price on these sandals. from this vendor was great. Free Shipping. Amazon eat your heart out!
This is not a problem with the shoes but a design consideration could be made for the future production. I have huge wide feet, and these shoes are LIGHT, they BREATH and are very comfortable - but with my feet, the space between my heel and the shoe heel and the front bit where they tie up, means that the shoes slide a bit forwards and backwards on my feet, and this leads to crabbing of the toes... I might have to make up a silicon spacer to fit in behind my heel, to drive the foot further into the shoe... to sort of wedge it in there a bit. Or I can try adding an extra bit of lace to the top banding, that runs from the top of the lacing and around to the heel, to close the hole up a bit by pulling the heel support in a bit tighter... Or I can just add some lace to ... MoreThis is not a problem with the shoes but a design consideration could be made for the future production. Or I can just add some lace to the top by threading it through the holes and around the heel.... These are really good shoes, but feet vary so much in length, width, height etc.. that some times it's hard to get a perfect match.... I for one am just basically glad the some places stock this brand and they make them in size 15 and bigger - instead of the usual chain department store that live in the delusion that all men have feet that only go up to size 11. This brand is long lasting and very comfortable - but I made change to a "sandle" type shoe, instead of the usual moon boot type hiking shoe. So the lack of height up too and around the ankle - reveals the sloppy fit that comes with my feet and this style of footware. However a bit of carefully shaped silicone / foam sheet behind the heel and lacing ought to improve the situation quite a lot. I'd be happy to buy more of them - no problem.
I rarely write any reviews, but these shoes demand a review. I bought a pair just before a 2 week canoeing trip up north because I needed a pair of 'river shoes' and the regular river shoes were useless, so soft they provided no protection to a rocky surface (which means most of the landings for canoeing) and difficult to put on and off. It was love at first sight. They are so easy to put on and take off even when soaking wet and covered with mud. The single pull elastic lace system provides easy and fast 'snugging' to the desired level whether I'm wearing a single pair of light socks or heavy neoprene socks. The uppers are sturdy and when laced up keep my feet firmly in the footbed even on rough terrain, rocks etc! I abused them horribly for 2 weeks, in and out of water, of mud, of rocks, of gravel and they were always totally comfortable. When I got home, I threw them in the washer and they came out looking the same as when I bought them - I wore them to church the next day! I love them, and when they wear out - my next pair will be the same. BTW, I'm 77 and I have arthritic feet!
I have had these shoes for 3 seasons now. When they are wet they smell bad.I mean bad. I have put them in the vestibule of the tent only to be told by Love of My Life to move them farther away. I agreed and place them meters away from the tent. The smell also transfers to your feet. What is the smell like? Similar to the bird guano / seal smell when at the cliffs in La Jolla; Similar to an algae plume on the Lake Ontario shore during a mid summer dry spell. It's bad. I would add smell-a-vision if it was possible.I have had them for three seans hoping it would go away...not a chance. Started my third season and the familiar smell has returned. On the plus side they fit my average width and arch size 9 foot well (but I did reduce a half size to 8.5).
