I have owned five pairs of Keen hiking boots and absolutely loved them until this pair. I thought I'd try something new, but never had my feet hurt so bad in my life. I have narrow feet and Keen regular size has always fit me perfectly. This boot given the materials it's made out of would fit my foot unless I tied them as tight as I could and me foot still moved around in the boot. The other thing I didn't like about them is they do not breath and are very hot! So, I do not recommend them for warm weather. Have owned five pairs previously I did not try them on immediately and only wore them for the first time this week. Even though I was past the 30 days generously Keen allowed me to return the boots and thank you! This shoe had good reviews elsewhere, and I'm really happy I got them.First of all, Mountain Designs service and prompt delivery were ridiculously good. In fact great. I had these boots on my feet within a couple of days of ordering them online.I will go to the negatives which are; the top open eyelet is quite small and will wear the lace out, the toe area is a bit too broad which means the fit will not be snug and the arch support is a bit underdone - but these are just the negatives. The positives is that this is still a very comfy shoe, very stylish and breathable while also being water resistant. I understand the sole is stitched rather than glued which has got to be a good thing for its longetivity.I wore these for the first time, and road tested them at ... MoreThis shoe had good reviews elsewhere, and I'm really happy I got them.First of all, Mountain Designs service and prompt delivery were ridiculously good. This is my first Targhee lace up and it feels good so far. I replaced my Cabelas Perfect Hiker (by Meindl) which I dearly love but since I am no longer in the Rockies, I felt I could lighten up my boots. I have worn Keen shoes over the years and always had good luck with them and I have about two years on a Targhee III Chelsea which is one of my favorites. From the box the boot is comfortable. It exhibits a little stiffness when first laced which is to be expected, and I believe there is a break-in period. As I have been wearing them in house, insuring they fit, my outdoor experience with the boot is nonexistent. However, I do believe they will become one of my favorites.Fit: The toe box is roomy and large. However, I do believe they will become one of my favorites.Fit: The toe box is roomy and large. I do believe the lace design should bring the heel tighter by a bit. I also believe there should be another eyelet on the top , although this could be more of a personal prefernce than a real need.Due to this being a waterproof boot, the tongue should be gusseted higher at least to the second eyelet.I am looking forward to wearing this boot in the outdoors in its proper environment . Should there be any unusual problems encountered, I will update this review.
Have worn Keen Voyageurs for many years. Thought I would give these a try. But the usual size 12 and hit the trails. Fit was a bit loose and top of boot irritated just over my ankle. Exchanged for 11.5 and hit the trails. Same thing. These were just not comfortable for me. Next hike I wore one of the new Targhee’s on one foot and one of my old Voyageurs on my other foot to compare. Difference was night/day. Don’t know exactly what it is but the Targhee’s just didn’t work for me. Ankle height was irritating, fit overall was just not right. I returned the 2nd pair and got a new pair of Voyageurs (lost count how many of these I have owned-all comfortable!). Much appreciate REI’s return policy. I’ve been wearing Keen footwear for many years and have always been pleased with the fit and quality. This fall I took up trail hiking and began my search for a good hiking boot that didn’t break the bank. I did some pretty thorough research and tried the most popular and highest rated boots for trail hiking for a guy with a wider foot across the toes. Have them a good trial run only to find they hurt my feet and didn’t provide the traction or support in the arch I was hoping for. (I also have relatively flat feet).Saw this boot in an ad from Keen offering 20 percent off and free shipping and returns.Of special note was the no questions asked try them for 30 days return policy. Thinking this was the normal try them but don’t wear outside policy, I called Keen and inquired if i could actually wear them outside. The friendly representative replied that yes. they mean outside. In fact she said take them for some hikes and if within 30 days you don’t like them return them no questions asked and a full refund. How could i resist that. Now have about 40 miles on them and find them to be supportive comfortable and have very good traction. on all surfaces. Even better than previous generations. Another plus is the very roomy toe box.
Thank you Influenster and Keen for sending my husband the Targhee IV hiking boots in exchange for our honest review. The boots arrived and I was super pleased with the quality of the boots. Quality footwear is important and you can tell that the Keen brand is quality. My husband is a size 12 medium and found the boots fit true to size with room in the footbed for comfort. He said that the boots although substantial, did not feel heavy on his feet. He liked how his body felt in them and he felt like he could wear them in comfort throughout a long day. He said he would wear them with jeans and not just for hiking. I appreciated that the boots are waterproof and made with recycled bottles. I think he just needs to play around with what works for him. Thanks Keen!
Unlike many of the reviewers here, I bought these boots with my own money and promptly returned them. This is a non-incentivized review. Why did i return them?1. Too hot! Within a few minutes of lacing the boots up and walking around indoors, my feet were sweating. I've worn other brands of waterproof boots, and have never experienced this problem before.2. Too big! I usually wear a size 10.5, these had enough room to wear multiple pairs of socks. I wouldn't recommend doing this though, as your feet will be very sweaty.3. Too high! The sole is too thick and the heal is too high, which makes for a wobbly feel. If you like feeling disconnected from the ground, this is the boot for you.The boots do seem to be well made, but design flaws and inaccurate sizing are ... MoreUnlike many of the reviewers here, I bought these boots with my own money and promptly returned them. I've had the Targhee II and III. The II was robust and wore it out after many years. I had two III models and they were very, very comfortable, but poor quality (both pulled apart at seams within a year of normal use - confirmed from various retailers of similar complaints). The IV while robust (craftsmanship seems great) feels like I am walking around with concrete on my feet. After a dozen mixed uses of short and long treks, my feet always hurt afterwards. Very little breathability. Heavy. It's uncomfortable and hard work using these - I feel like the boots are using me, not the other way around. If the III were built better I'd go with them again. A bonus is I have wide feet and they are accommodating. Very disappointed... and physically aching.
I never tried KEEN shoes before this pair, but I'm really glad I did. In fact, from now on I'll probably own a pair of these for as long as Keen and I both exist. These weren't my usual style of boot I purchase either, but I think they look really sharp. Comfortable right out of the box and feel perfectly broken in by the end of the second day of wear. I put in a few miles of hiking each weekend since I got them and they are absolutely my most comfortable hiking shoes I own. They are incredibly well made too. One thing i normally avoid on a shoe are the looped strap eyes for the laces, but after researching these shoes that doesn't seem to be a problem for anyone else, even people who have owned their shoes for several years still have all the eye loops intact. Do they cost more than your average tennis shoe? Yes. Will they last longer and be more comfortable than the vast majority of any other footwear, seems that way. I can not recommend them enough.
