Buy cheap and get cheap

Eventually I'll learn...maybe: Buy cheap and get cheap. Save up your money and go buy a pair of boots from a German manufacturer carried here at MEC. You know the one. Starts with H and ends in wag. These Keens are falling apart after a few months of just day to day urban use. Not even on any sort of signifiant hike. Day to day front country use. Soles are pealing off like the other review. Fabric already worn through in a few spots and just not that comfy. And when you consider the price! Yikes. Save up and for another 100 bucks or so you can get a proper well made boot that will outlast these flimsy Keens probably on the order of a few years. Way better value.Bottom line is would I but the product again? Not a chance.

Disappointed, and these aren't for me

I've worn these for about 150 miles over 2 months and am disappointed on two levels. First is the fit. I went with Keens after years of wearing other brands because these kept coming up in the "most comfortable" lists I was seeing as I shopped for a new pair. Undoubtedly the very wide fit, which is characteristic of all Keens, must be comfortable for some. The issue for me, though, is the instability of the shoe. I tend to overpronate with my right foot, and after 100 miles my right foot has pushed so far inward that I'm getting blisters. These boots really seem to have little to no stability, so if you're looking for a firm ride I'd say be careful with these. The other problem is the claim of waterproofing. The outer materials of the boots themselves are waterproof, but the materials around the tongue and midfoot are definitely not waterproof. So if you're in any water that comes up around the top of the shoe, even a bit, you're going to have wet feet. Other boots with waterproofing (e.g., a GoreTex outer) in my experience have not featured this kind of leaking. So, all in all, I'm disappointed and will be replacing these with another brand after only about 2 months of wear.

I do wish Keen would make a non-water proof or hot weather version in wide. Additionally, the boot is pretty much worn out after 9 months. A little over 200 miles hiking plus other activities. The plasticized canvas type material that runs along the sole cracked and came apart on the inside of the toe-box on both. This material is not as resilient as the leather and cannot be conditioned. If not for this, the boots would still be serviceable. At this price point, I cannot really complain. I can buy 3 pairs for what others cost and these fit. I also bought at a big-box outdoor retailer. They may and been sitting on a shelf for a while.

Instant Comfort To My Low Arches
16 January 2024

This is my 4th pair of Targhee III's. I found these while looking for a boot that stays comfortable after a 20mi hike. The Targhee III was instantly comfortable and I've worn them exclusively for 2000mi!Most footwear I've tried has a wide toebox, but a tall and narrow arch, making them painful to stand and maneuver in. The standard width Targhee fit comfortably because it's generally a wider shoe, and has an extremely low arch, and relies on the interchangeable insole for arch support. The shoe as it comes is performant, but coupling it with the Keen Outdoor K-30 Low Arch Insole has me walking in clouds! Otherwise, you'll notice they get too flexible over the next 100mi of use.In short, they're comfortable and reliable for as long as you care for them!

MEN'S TARGHEE III WATERPROOF MID COLOR: FOREST NIGHT/EVENING PRIMROSE SIZE: 8 - Extremely Narrow
21 December 2022

I am a woman who wears a size 9 regular width. I normally purchase a wone's 9.5 in a hiking booth to allow for the thick wool socks. The men's size 8 is usually more than big enough and normally a little too wide. I tried this booth on and loved the fit not too wide and my big toe was position perfect. Walked around the house and everything seemed fine. Wore the boots all day and had horrible pain on both the right and left outer sides of my foot where the insole of the booth came up and ended. Wore them again the next day and the same thing happened by mid-day. Went to REI and asked for assistance. The representative concluded this particular model of Keen's booth was running a little narrow. We tried on others and a men's 8 was perfect. The representative concluded this particular model of Keen's booth was running a little narrow. We tried on others and a men's 8 was perfect. However, I tried on a men's 8.5 and the pain went away immediately. I purchased the men's booth because dark green is my absolute favorite color and the yellow made them look a little more like a women's booth. Fortunately, I had a need to break these booths in for an upcoming trip to New Orleans and I was under the 30-day return window. I returned the boots. I spoke to Keen's representative who was being a little difficult about honoring the sale price to order a half size larger in the exact same shoe. She basically said take it or leave it if you want the boot. I was really surprised and shared I did not feel like a valued Customer. I really liked the shoe and to my luck when the return label came there was a $10.00 coupon to try again. I asked if I could put that towards the shoe and she put me on hold and came back with another price that was $10.00 less but still more than the original price. I just settled and paid the higher price since I really liked the booth. If REi would have had the booth for the sale price at the moment I would have purchased the Men's Targhee III Waterproof Mid Color: Forest Night/ Evening Primrose from that organization. Mainly because REI has EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. That really counts when something goes wrong. I did not give a harsh rating of 4 stars -because Keen's booth only had one issue- running narrow. I treated the horrible Customer Service separately and I vote and score that with my dollars and cents going forward - 1 Star.

Not the same boot
14 December 2023

This is my 5th Keen boot/shoe. Detroit, Targhee II, Atlanta steel toe, Sparta, and now Targhee III. Two of them fit at a 8.5 size. The other two at 8.0 size. I ordered these in 8.0 and they're a bit big for my feet. This Targhee III is very different from the Targhee II as it wears differently and constructed differently. They should have named it something else as it's not similar. Still, I hope they will work for me and feel comfortable when first wearing them (besides the slight size difference). They're out of stock now, but these shoes are not wearable in their current condition. I'm debating whether trying to fix the issue at home or make a claim for defect. They hurt the ball of my foot after a couple hours of walking. I thought maybe they need to be broken in, but it continued and got worse. It's not an arch thing but a pebble in your shoe feeling. I check beneath the inserts, the sole on both shoes is a little bumpy and not smooth. Right at the ball of my right foot in the right shoe, there are two larger bumps. I don't know why they the sole isn't smooth and bumpy instead, but the two large bumps apply pressure like walking on a pebble. It's large enough that it affects my foot through the insert. I end up limping the rest of the day after a couple hours of walking.

Not waterproof!
9 December 2023

I bought these boots last winter but this month was the first time I'd worn them in a moderate rainfall. They are absolutely not waterproof. A two kilometer walk along the Seawall in Vancouver left the boots completely soaked from toe to heel. In fact, I could feel my feet getting wet about the halfway point. I wore rain pants cinched tight over the top of the boot, so the rain did not get in around the ankles, it got in by soaking through the leather and fabric and through the supposedly waterproof Keen-Dry barrier. I even tested the boots the next day after they were dry. I put them under a light spray from my shower head, careful to only wet the exterior and sure enough within a minute or two I could feel the damp spreading on the inside of the boot. Quality control & Poor materials
6 January 2023

I've been wearing 2 different Keen boots for about 10 years now, the Targhee III for hiking & Detroit's for work. I want too love them but have mixed feelings on them both. Let's start by saying they're both extremely comfortable right out the box, which is the only reason I've purchased 3 Detroits and 2 Targhee III each about 2-3 years apart. However the build quality was horrible on all 5 pairs with the exact same problems. All three pairs of Detroits leaked within 2 weeks, The glue around the soul and tow start to separate very quickly, which is probably why they leak and the lugs started tearing off after 6 months. I've read many keen responses too bad reviews stating they are manufacturing defects. As you can see this is not a defect issue but a cheap standard and poor quality issue. It's pretty inconceivable for five different pairs of boots all bought in a 10 years span having the exact same issues. Sorry to say I believe I've owned my last pair of keens, which is unfortunate because they are one of the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.

Very Comfortable, but not good for wet conditions
8 April 2024

I bought these in April 2023, and it's now April 2024, so I've had them approximately 1 year. My first impression was they are incredibly comfortable. I wear them mainly for dog walking and hikes in the British countryside, where it is wet and muddy for most of the year. For a number of reasons (weather, new job, poor health) I didn't wear them a much until February/March this year, but now that I am wearing them a lot I am noticing their shortcomings. Firstly the sole is easily overwhelmed by mud, making them quite slippy. Secondly they have a tendency to retain moisture and take much longer than other boots of a similar style do to dry. I do clean and maintain my boots, but these are starting to deteriorate fairly quickly now and despite my best efforts they smell quite bad too. I can see the toe bumper beginning to peel away from the upper and small gaps are starting to appear down each side of each boot on both inner and outer portions near the ball of my foot. The heal area inside is beginning to fray too, so could do with either a stronger lining or a counter.I will now relegate these boots to occasional use in dry conditions. A simple hike on Malham Cove proved too much for them and while the lining is intact and my feet stayed dry, the fabric soaked up a lot of water, despite being waterproofed 24 hours prior to the hike. Conditions were muddy with some unavoidable puddles, but it didn't rain that day so it's not like I was walking in torrential rain for hours. I've had other boots that cope with these conditions no problem and dry out much quicker.Overall I'm disappointed. A very comfortable boot, with design flaws. Perhaps it's just not designed for UK conditions and would work better in drier climates, but I've mostly worn them on woodland paths with the occasional puddle. it's only been a handful of times where I've got them really muddy and wet.I also have to question Keen's green credentials here as it looks like non of their products can be resoled, despite a big effort being placed on sustainability on the product pages, and claims that the Targhee IV is the last boot you will ever need - sorry but the sole will wear out, even if the uppers don't split first, and you will need to buy a new pair of boots. I doubt I could get more than 6 months out any Keen boots on typical UK hiking. Keen, if you think I am wrong please get in touch.
