We have had this toy since we first got our dog, Luna, which was about a year ago. She is an aggressive chewer FOR SURE. She is about 53 lbs, and although the size of the Kong bone would typically be a little small for her, the durability is great. It is actually one of the only toys we still have left from when we first got her. We now have a second dog who also loves it. We do occasionally put treats in there, toss it around, and tug on it. It holds up really well.

Our Newfoundland was able to chew a small chunk off the end of this toy (the largest size). Our Mastiff grabbed it and swallowed it. It lodged in her small intestine. One trip to the emergency vets and $4000 in surgery to remove it from her intestines. It happened in less than 5 minutes with the toy. I would not recommend this as a toy for tough chewers, moderate at best. He literally had it for less than 5 minutes. Newfoundlands and Mastiffs are tough chewers. From now on Nylabones only for our true tough chewers.

My dog can destroy most toys in no time at all. He is a shepherd/lab mix and this Kong bone lasts longer than anything else. We load it with kibble or other goodies and he goes to town! He also chews on it after his dinner and whenever he feels like it. We play with him using the bone. It lasts several months, until eventually he is able to tear it apart. Time for a new one. I hope Kong never stops making them!

My 12 yo mixed breed adores this Kong toy. She carries it with her when she goes upstairs to bed, and back down in the morning. We use Ziggies or a cylindrical-style dried cheese treat and Kong EZ Cheez to stuff the ends, and she works on it for hours, eventually getting everything out. She will even sit and chew it when it's "empty." She has two and they both have lasted for years, and she is a tough chewer. I'm writing this as I order her a third for the holidays so we always, always have one on hand no matter what, lol.
Our last dog could chew Nylabones but broke her teeth on real bones. So I stuck to Nylabone with this guy. He's a big, nervous guy, and he seemed to calm himself by chewing on the Nylabone. But he broke a tooth on that. So the only option we could see was trying a Kong. Didn't work. He'll lick the stuff out of this okay. But once that's gone, he has no interest in chewing on rubber.
I’ve been looking for a high quality bone that my golden retriever can chew on for a long time without it breaking apart within minutes or hours. Besides compressed bone, the other one I got previously made of plastic - broke apart easily and the small pieces became a real problem as they can easily get ingested. This one is made of solid rubber and hasn’t come apart since I got it a week ago. Highly recommended for large dogs. Only thing to note is it’s a tad heavy for the XL size.
He has about 6 dog toys I've purchased over the years, but this is the one he always ends up spending the most time with. Not too heavy, very durable. His is starting to get some teeth marks in it now, after many years of chewing. Just make sure to clean it every so often. Give it a short soak in a small tub of water and a bit of Dawn dish soap (no vinegar, as vinegar can cause rubber to break down). Wipe clean with a sponge, maybe a small soft brush for the treat holders on each end, and it's good for several weeks or months. Not cleaning any toy (or toys that break apart) can potentially result in your little pal getting sick. Highly recommend this one!
This bone lasted longer than some toys, but is definitely not strong enough or thick enough to stand up to a power chewer. It took my (at that point) <50lb dog about 30 minutes to chew a medium size one almost in half. I doubt the outcome would be any different for the large; they're just too thin in the middle. She was *highly* entertained for those 30 minutes, though, making all sorts of rubber-squeaking-against-teeth sounds, but it's not worth the price to not last a single day. For reference, it's her mission in life to shred (and eat) any rubber toy. She had a flap of a large Chuckit Ultra ball ripped loose in 20 minutes, demolished an "indestructible" Ruff Dawg donut in 10 minutes flat, and has ripped up more "durable" toys than I can count in the 5 months ... MoreThis bone lasted longer than some toys, but is definitely not strong enough or thick enough to stand up to a power chewer. While this bone didn't last, the large size Kong Extreme Goodie Ribbon and large Extreme Ball survived her manic chewing. The only other rubber toys to make it so far are Goughnuts toys, a large WoofBite ball, WoofBite ring, large Petsafe Squirrel Dude, and surprisingly, the cheap Frisco brand holiday toys like the snowman and pumpkin that are made to hold treats kind of like a Kong.
I’ll preface this review by saying that I do supervise my dogs any time they are out of their crates pretty closely, but no one can watch their dogs 24/7.I bought this toy with the thought that it would be great for treats, and since it was labeled “extreme” it should be great for power chewing sessions as well.I don’t allow my dogs to chew toys for hours on end, but they are growing puppies and are teething so I do allow chewing for about 15-30 minutes per session.During a chewing session with this bone, I did have to run outside for an emergency and left the dogs temporarily inside. I was only gone for maybe 15 minutes, but when I came back in one of my dogs had chewed through the bone and some pieces were missing. He threw up one piece about a week later, ... MoreI’ll preface this review by saying that I do supervise my dogs any time they are out of their crates pretty closely, but no one can watch their dogs 24/7.I bought this toy with the thought that it would be great for treats, and since it was labeled “extreme” it should be great for power chewing sessions as well.I don’t allow my dogs to chew toys for hours on end, but they are growing puppies and are teething so I do allow chewing for about 15-30 minutes per session.During a chewing session with this bone, I did have to run outside for an emergency and left the dogs temporarily inside. I was only gone for maybe 15 minutes, but when I came back in one of my dogs had chewed through the bone and some pieces were missing. He threw up one piece about a week later, and another after about a month. Fast forward 3 months later, he stopped eating and drinking and was acting lethargic.Naturally, I took him to the vet and had him checked out. They found a foreign object in his small intestine that required surgery to remove. This object turned out to be another chunk of this bone.Upside to surgery, I now know he is clear of all chunks of this toy. Downside, it was very costly and of course a horrible experience for my dog.I have heard owners say this toy lasted with their dog, and some others had destroyed toys that have lasted a while for my dogs. I suppose it is subjective, but at this point I could never recommend this toy to a friend.I hope Kong will read this review and make this toy much more sturdy in the middle section, as there was almost no damage done to the ends. The only part that was broken and ingested was the middle section.I also hope owners will read this and accept my warning not to ever leave their dogs alone with any toy. This was a stressful experience for everyone involved and I wouldn’t wish it on any dog or owner.
For context, I have a 65lbs pitbull. Our house is a toy graveyard. He loves to rip things up and needs to chew everyday or he gets restless.I like that, instead of a lot of "indestructible" toys that I get, this is made of flexible rubber and not hard plastic. This will probably last a while with my dog but it depends on your dog. I wouldn't get this assuming that it will last forever, because it probably won't.Overall, I like this a lot better than other toys I've gotten for tough chewers. And my dog likes it too. He was chewing on it even before I put treats in it. And he's not been gentle either, I can hear how hard he's chewing and I haven't seen any bite marks yet. But it's only the second day.
