Lamy - Al-Star - Fountain Pen - Medium - Black

Based on the Al-Star, the Lamy Lx (Luxe) fountain pen is a beautifully stylish aluminium body pen. It retains all the good engineering design that went into the Safari and has been carried over to the AL-Star but with a few extra features. The heavy clip of the AL-Star has been plated to match the pen body colour. The nib has also been upgraded, with engraving and black high gloss PVD coating designed to improve its durability. The Lx comes with its own cylindrical case of anodised aluminium exactly the same shade as the pen it protects. The Lx still takes the same Lamy T10 ink cartridges or bottled ink via the Lamy Z28 converter. The window (which allows you to see how much ink you have left) and the contoured black tinted grip have also been retained from the AL-Star. It comes with one Lamy T10 blue ink cartridge.

Beautiful Pen, Smooth, Versatile

Nibs on lamy pens are super versatile. I bought this in a fine, but I use a black EF for every day purposes, and a 1.1 stub if I'm feeling fancy. My fine (and a 1.5) are on my lamy safari. I've been using Liberty's Elysium (I love this ink), which can be a bit tricky. It dries a bit on the nib and is a bit difficult to clean off, though it doesn't disrupt flow at all (this pen writes great!). With an easier to clean ink, I assume it would be super easy to clean and maintain the pen.

The Lamy Safari is a design classic, and the Al-Star version builds on this status by offering the pen that we all know and love in an aluminium body. Either one would make a great fountain pen for travel or day-to-day use, but the durability of the metal version gives it an edge over its plastic cousin. If you’re a seasoned fountain pen user, the Al-Star makes a great daily writer, if you’re a fountain pen novice, this pen is a great place to start. Lamy fountain pens are well made, and ergonomically sound. Oh, and they look good, too. The range is large, so there’s bound to be something for everyone. This one is my sixth Lamy fountain pen. For their price, and what they are, I can’t fault them.

I bought this to replace the LAMY Safari I lost on the train. At first I thought it was no different, but the aluminum body is extremely nice to hold, slightly cool when you first pick it up.A few weeks in, and it's firmly in my top pens for note taking - the nib is smooth and writes well on a range of different papers. It's currently paired with the Private Reserve Chocolat ink that Goulet was kind enough to bundle for free with my purchase. I highly recommend it as an upgrade to the Safari.

I bought two Lamy pens
21 April 2022

I bought two Lamy pens. One was all white and was on special and the other was the one pictured above. Both are fine, in line with my other Lamy Safari pens, although I think the ink flow is better on the blue one. I was surprised that the Pen Boutique doesn't stock the full line of Safari/Lamy cartridge refills in all of the available colors. Basically, everything is fine. Thanks for being a reliable provider of my pen of choice.

It is actually a little embarrassing how much I love this pen
19 January 2021

I love this pen. First off, it is just a really nice size of thing to hold in your hand if you fidget a lot, you can pass it between your fingers when you aren't writing and it is just nice, the texture of the finish is somewhere between matte and shiny so that it looks really cool, catches the light in neat ways, and also just feels good. The smoky grip appeals to the nerd in me, it satisfies the urge to see inside the pen without being a full demonstrator that might look messy. It is heavier than the safari and I do not post it when writing, as posting makes it a bit too back-heavy for me (I have smallish hands). I got the extra fine nib and it writes great even on the less than nice quality paper I have. The one warning I would give is that I tried using ... MoreI love this pen. The one warning I would give is that I tried using noodler's ink with this pen and it made the nib go from an extra fine to like a medium or thicker on okay quality paper- so if you are into the very thin lines like I am I would go for dryer inks with this pen. I found the pen easy to clean, and the clip keeps it securely in any pocket you put it in. I already hope to get this pen in another color when I can. Also it came packaged completely in paper/cardboard and very snug and secure- so +1 for safe shifting and +10 for not hurting the planet while doing it.

LAMY ALL STAR FOR WATER COLOR
24 November 2018

I USE THE LAMY ALL STAR EXCLUSIVELY. I HAVE TRIED 100'S OF INK FOUNTAIN PENS, MOST POOR QUALITY I BOUGHT IN VIETNAM. MOST OF THOSE WORKED WELL TO BEGIN WITH BUT THE INK DRIED OUT QUICK. I STARTED USING DIFFERENT TYPES OF LAMY PENS AND FOUND THAT THAT THE SAFARI AND OTHER LESS EXPENSIVE LAMYS' HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE ENDED UP EXCLUSIVELY WITH THE ALL STAR. I PRESENTLY HAVE OVER 50 OF THOSE FOR VARIOUS COLORED FOUNTAIN PEN INK. SINCE I USE WATER COLOR PAPER WHICH TENDS TO BE ROUGH I HAVE HAD TO USE MOSTLY MEDIUM AND B NIBS, THOUGH SOME FINE PENS WORK AS WELL. IT SEEMS THAT THE ALL STAR'S INK FLOWS BETTER THAN THE OTHER LAMY MAKES. THE OLD ALL BLACK CARTRIDGE CONVERTERS WORK MUCH EASIER THAN THE NEW SILVER ONES

Perfect in every way
8 March 2023

This pen is amazing. After using it for about 3 months, I can say a few things. First, the aluminium body adds the perfect amount of weight to make it just right. Also, the ef nib is great. It has some nice feedback while still gliding over the paper. Also, the triangle shaped handle makes it good to give to friends, since it sets them up for success with the right grip. However, the clip is getting a bit loose, but that is a (kinda) easy fix. Overall, one of my favourite pens, especially considering how affordable it is.

Pleasantly Surprised
6 February 2021

I was at first a little reluctant to purchase this LAMY AL-Star, but am glad to have done so. It is a great pen! It fits well in my hand, is not too light or too heavy in weight, and writes very well. In fact, it writes much better than expected.I am so pleased with this pen, I gave to my wife the Goulet Pen website link for this same pen, but in a different color. It was a not-so-subtle hint, as my birthday is coming up next month. Oh well...if she does not take the bait, I’ll place the order myself! On a different note, I cannot say enough good about the staff at Goulet Pens. Customer service is always excellent, with a genuine willingness to assist their customer base. Thanks, folks!

Really god pen
23 July 2022

Lamy AL -Star fountain pens are consistently good writers especially for long writing sessions due to their balance and light weight. I have several of them and they all preform well above their their price point. The pens are well made of high quality materials and although some do not find the contoured grip section to their liking, I find it quite comfortable. All round good pen.

The only prob with Al-Stars and Safaris...
8 August 2023

I just ordered an Ocean Blue Al-Star so I must like these, right? The only prob with these Safaris and Al-Stars is that they have a lifetime based on number of cap on/offs. The cap fits to the body using a mechanism that grabs near the pen nib in front of the section. Something there wears out and after a certain time just quits. The one I was using was my note pen that I use also when on "phone duty" with my company so it went through many on/off cycles.
