I have used this product since 2008. Up until last year, it was amazing. I have black hair and it would get my roots a bright magenta in 20 minutes with 30 vol developer, no problem. But then I started having problems and it was no longer lifting the black roots at all. I thought I got a bad box, tried again... Same results. I tried new developer. No luck. I tried 40 vol developer for 40 min and STILL nothing. I thought something was wrong with my hair, and then my sister told me the same thing happened to her with the same product. I did a reddit search and it seems like they may have changed the formula in the last year and it no longer works. It's really a bummer, I loved this stuff.

I have been using L’Oreal Hicolor dye for about 3 months now and plan to continue buying it. The dye itself is anti breakage and leaves my hair feeling silky smooth when I am done washing it out. For this product you do need a developer to use it, I recommend pairing it with Salon Care 20 Volume for the best results. The image with a red shirt was taken the day after I dyed my hair and the camouflage jacket is one month later.

Ok, so, I was super excited for this red hair color for dark hair, I've never dyed my hair red. I've had every other color except for red. I said ok, I think I'm gonna do this. I read reviews, looked at photos and was confident it would be red. (NOTE: I have dyed dark brown/black hair that has new hair growth at the roots so it's been washed quite a bit and it has been months since I dyed it dark brown/black.) I read reviews where ppl with about the same color dyed hair had good results so I went for it. I do believe of you have virgin/never dyed before brown hair it will work, maybe even a lighter brown dyed hair, it will work. It only dyed my new growth/roots magenta lol. With all that said, buy this at your own discretion lol. I wish I could post photos but there ... MoreOk, so, I was super excited for this red hair color for dark hair, I've never dyed my hair red. My hair is naturally VERY dark brown (with some tiny gray streaks I've had since my early 20's lol). The first time I used this, I didn't quite get the brightness I'd hoped for. The second time, my hair was MUCH redder and brighter... not quite as intenselyred as I was going for, but it was a beautiful shade of dark red that I enjoyed. The next time,it was absolutely stunning! Eventually I began playing with the Loreal red highlights for dark hair, mixing some of the highlights (I used red or magenta) in with the permanent creme to achieve different hues of red (Tip: make sure to use the correct amount of developer for each product!! That's important). I've been a fan for 9 years. Yes. 9. Give it more than one shot if you don't quite get the results you hoped for and you TRULY followed the instructions on the box (use 30 developer or even 40 - but if you use 40 you should definitely pamper your hair with moisture hair masks & good conditioner). Used correctly, your hair will be healthy and lovely once you find what works for you. IT DOES WORK BEAUTIFULLY AND IS VIBRANT FOR A LONG TIME!

This stuff is great and FYI TO EVERYONE WHO COMPLAINS HOW IT DOES NOT LAST LONG, it is because you MUST use a sulfate free shampoo and any other products you use on hair must be sulfate free if you want to extend the lifespan of your hair color when it’s red. Another trick is DO NOT USE HOT WATER on it, use lukewarm to cold. Just use the least amount of warm water that you can tolerate comfortably and your red will stay in so much longer. Heat and sulfate are your enemies with dyed red hair. Now I had dark brown hair and this product lifted me every single time and never is it splotchy or uneven. If your hair has virgin roots and the rest is dyed/processed already, then do not apply the red to the virgin roots until last. If your hair has virgin roots and the rest is dyed/processed already, then do not apply the red to the virgin roots until last. Otherwise you will have brighter roots that stand out and apart from the rest of your hair. My advice is put the dye on roots in the last 10 minutes of coloring and then take a damp cloth and check roots to see if it has lifted to same level. If so then you’re done, if not then add a little bit of dye back to the roots that you just wiped, in order to check , and leave on for another five or so minutes then repeat everything I just explained again. You get the point. Or you can use 20 developer on roots and 30 or 40 developer on the rest of your hair, but wait and apply to the roots last, after you have done all other hair. This will require mixing two separate batches and buying two separate strength developers. I personally just use the method of same strength all around but not applying to my roots until the last 10 to 15 minutes. If your hair is not processed then just apply this all over in one swoop because you have nothing to worry about!! For me when I use this brand, It Always comes out beautifully. Can’t recommend this product enough for vibrant reds when your hair is dark. !!!!!

Used Magenta on dark auburn prev boxed dyed foREVER! Tried this once & didn't take. Thats when I realized I couldn't use this to essentially to lift all the years of box dye. This worked but I gotta just say BAKING SODA & DAWN TO REMOVE OLD BOX DYE FROM MY HAIR WAS LIYERALLY THE BEST THING IVE EVER DONE to my hair & most noticeable hands down!! My hair has never felt so friggin clean but I've never used clarifying 'poos etc fir lack of knowledge basically but THIS WAS AMAZING prpbly cuz it took the 40+ yrs of just junk from my poor hair. But after I also gotta say with 30 dev and magenta I'm happy to report my hair was absolutely gorgeous especially in sunlight. What amazing colors how there are so many prisms to these shades. It's really beautiful what loreal did with this line. Ive never honestly noticed much diff box dye vs prof dyes (I already know folks but just hear me out) but with this what I did FINALLY notice with these vs box dyes was the sheer amt of diff reds and magenta prisms that run thru ur hair. This could just b my hairs various color state prior but it's crazy how many shades u see or prism effects u get when using the pro dyes at says. Theyre quite beautiful out in sunlight its amazing. Box dye never did this but always one color note or shade & thats all u get ecen in sunlight. These dyes give ur hair color dimension for anyone wanting to know the true for real diff here on box vs these days. These are onv better looking but that's exactly why or I think its why.For the record my hair is thick darker brown with some auburn stuff fairly long Italian hair. I needed only 2 boxes of magenta dye (bought 4 the 1st time & its wayyyy too much even for really thick long hair). Two is perfect but u may grab a 3rd box for an emergency cuz u will use it for ur roots next touch up session anyway. Better safe then sorry. But I used ecery last drop of 2 boxes so fyi. I have quite a lot of gray coming thru at my 46 ur aged hair so I was a little worries. Just DONT apply the dye to ur roots 1st or u will proy end up with a hotter pink then everywhere else aka hot roots. Becuz I have thick hair & I was the only person applying this which takes a LONG TIME keep this in mind on roots. But when I was totally done with dye I was jumping in shower to rinse cuz I worried about my roots & im guessing I was thru at around 45 mins total so my roots probly processed a total of 10 to 15 mins tops & even at that I was right on the edge of hot roots but just safe enough cuz after I washed my hair several days later it did wash the roots out a bit making the entire job PERFECT. Truly beautiful color Loreal!! Nice job on this line in general!! And thank u so much for giving us dark hair chicks a simple 1 step process instead of having to bleach it all beforehand. I cannot thank u enough for that alone!!!!♡♡♡♡♡ sorry this was lengthy I just wanted to put it all out there cuz there is alot online & it does get overwhelming at times but this way worked for me.im not sure if I mentioned dev yet or if I said 30 but I did use 20 loreal dev not 30. Mine worked great & it was fairly dark brown. Good luck!!!!! U got this trust me it ain't that hard once u dive in but with this the only major way or I think the only way to mess up is not have the dye not take which I learned the lesson there. Hopefully this'll save sum1 from wasting the 1st time money like I did. Lol l8tr

And I used the red color booster the hicolor intense red provided too!

Unsatisfying but not terrible
23 March 2024

I bought the copper red permanent dye for my virgin dark brown hair. On my first application, I processed my lengths for 20 mins and my roots for 10 mins as the box instructed, the results were more like subtle highlights, did not show up well at all. I had to buy a second box and this time, I processed my lengths for an hour and then my roots for 30 minutes, for a total of 90 minutes. My hair is now a reddish brown -- still quite dark, but the red catches in the light nicely. Still, it's not at all to the level of vibrancy as the box advertises. I will probably go the traditional bleach and then dye with a different brand next time. If you get this product, I think you should definitely process longer than the box says!

Works with black box dyed hair but needs to fade a couple months after last being dyed first.
18 July 2024

I have black boxed dyed hair. I know this is supposed to be used on virgin black/dark hair but decided to try it anyways. It gave a very small hint of purple (I used the true violet) but of course my roots are a dark dark purple. So as my roots have grown I keep using this color because I like the look. As my black box dye fades each month the purple grabs onto it a little more. I usually just do the roots but every other month I do my entire head since it’s started to grab on. If your hair is freshly box dyed with black it won’t do anything but color your roots. However once you quit using the black box dye and it starts to fade, the color will gradually start to attach. I made the mistake of using a color remover on black box dye years ago and it took forever for color to attach to my hair again so I wasn’t willing to go that route again and I’m not bleaching it either. I like the gradual color and dark purple roots.
