Mackie MR524 Active 5" Monitor Speaker [Single]

Everyone seems to be rocking KRK's. I picked these up based on the name, and the look. When I first brought them home I almost returned them, because they were very bass heavy. After about 20 hours of break in they settled in. These have less coloration than the KRK's, and are very flat. Awesome for mixing, and listening. I wish the tweeter was protected like the Yamaha line up, but other than that they are amazing. Get some MOPOD's to put under them and your set.

I use these speakers to listen to a variety of music from classical, to 80s, to punk, to hard rock...and I dabble a little in MIDI/Synthesizers as well. The Mackies get it done with a crisp sound in an attractive and affordable package. You can't go wrong with the Mackie brand's reputation either. There are no cons i can think of. i suppose the one thing that's different to me is that each speaker has it's own power cord/supply that must be plugged into an outlet as opposed to a cheaper pair of speakers that has one shared power cord/supply.

One thing first, they're not actually as LOUD as I thought they'd might be but that's not going to detract from my 5 stars because why should they be. These are monitors and are loud enough to serve an edit suite perfectly. The sound quality, critically, is more than can be hoped for at this price point. They sound delicious and you know they'll last forever. You're paying $400 for two and a lifetime of use. No brainer.

I was looking for an affordable solution for my home edit suite and these monitor blew me away. There is plenty of depth to the sound and they add a new dimension to sound that you can't get through headphones. I have used monitors Mackie's higher end HR624mk2 for years professionally and would say these stack up nicely to them. The HR624mk2's are quite a bit louder but in terms of quality you will not be lacking.
I've used these speakers for over 2 years now as my daily driving set of studio monitors, and they've served me well for production, mixing and basic mastering. If you are starting your recording journey and are looking for a pair to grow with, this is a great start. Beginners will be pleased with the ease of use and volume output. More intermediate users will appreciate the build quality over time, the options for speaker placement, and the consistent tone. These speakers on their own provide some of the clearest high and mid frequencies that's consistent and above all, balanced. These are excellent speakers. One thing to keep in mind about these monitors is that being only 5" the low end is noticeably lacking. These speakers on their own would need to be cranked to hear low end properly. If you are looking to mix low end at a reasonable level or mix bottom heavy music, I would strongly recommend adding the separate studio sub in addition to these speakers. After installing one myself, it has made a significant difference. Low end becomes far easier to hear and mix by extension with far less ear fatigue. What I like about the combination however is that the sub can be toggled on and off via footswitch (I use it often in the later stages of mixing for balance). However, if that's unreasonable, unaffordable, or unavailable for your studio, you may be more inclined to purchase the MR824 for a more pronounced low end.
For video you'd be hard pressed to have better sound for two or more times the price. I only sit arm's length away from them, so they're quite punchy without being overwhelming. Great stereo field. Quite revealing too.
I'm using these in my home studio. They fit the bill quite nicely. The best part of these is the true balanced inputs, the ability to make either speaker box right or left channel. They are accurate and have a great flat response. Plenty of overhead too for my purposes. Best monitors at this price point!
Purchased MR524 for studio. Good size, nice clear sound, look great and provides excellent reproduction. Just what I had hoped would be the case. Current big heavy speakers back to the shed!
These Mackie speakers are really surprisingly good, especially for the price. They do take more power to drive than the Tannoy Reveal 501A's they replaced, but that's no big deal. It took a little bit of time to find just the right spot and angle for them on my desk, but now I'm treated to nice, deep, tight bass unlike anything I expected. These are rated to 50Hz and I can tell that's not an over exaggeration. The highs are much less sibilant and noisy than the previous Tannoy speakers I had. I listen to a lot of EDM, Rock, and Metal so mids and lows are critical. I do have a small subwoofer which fills out the sound just a little bit, but honestly these don't need it. I compared these to the MRMK3 speakers, and these really improve the clarity and accuracy of the music. I also cross-shopped PreSonus, Sterling Audio, KRK, Focal, Yamaha, and Pioneer. All the brands have their pluses and minuses, so it really comes down to personal preference. For what it's worth, I didn't find the Mackie MR524's to be quite as clear or bright as the PreSonus Eris E5's, but ultimately the lack of mid-bass response from the PreSonus speakers was the deciding factor. The PreSonus would be fantastic if you're primarily listening to classical or vocal music, but for everything else I think Mackie has them beat hands-down for the same price.I drive the Mackie's from my computer via Optical S/PDIF to a Yamaha RX-V1 receiver. I then pass the unbalanced output to a CleanBox Pro for balancing and run XLR to the speakers themselves. I keep volume on all devices around 50-60%. I have no doubt I could blast these to ear-deafening levels but I actually like my neighbors.
I love these for their honest clarity. I upgraded from a lesser set of these monitors and like these even more. I just wish they had threaded screw mounts to wall mount them. And I do wish the power switch was on the front. But they do sound great and these are a great option for pure clean sound!
