The material was kind of thin, so I would often stub my tow and feel much of what I would step on. This is a great fitting hiker, comfortable right out of the box. The wide widths are appreciated for my very wide and flat feet. The Vibram soles are aggressive and grippy, but I've only put about 50 miles on this pair so i can't say how well they will stay attached. The boots are not truly waterproof, more like very water repellent. There is some pinhole leakage in the GoreTex liner, noticeable when the boot is submerged (crossing a creek in my case). I dont know if this is a manufacturing issue with the seams or if something is wrong with the membrane itself. Not a big deal in summer, but you will want to bring spare socks in cold weather.

My wife and I just used our Moab 3's to hike a portion of the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain. The boots held up well, providing great traction in a variety of trail conditions from pavement to dusty roads to hiking over boulders, slag and scree. A couple of days of hiking in the rain as well and our feet stayed dry too. All in all, a great light hiking boot. I would only mark it down a 1/2 star if I could as the sole of the boot is a little too flexible when we were on the steeper descents on the most rocky sections of the trail. I felt the uneven terrain through the soles of my feet just a bit too much. Bought my original Merrells about 15 yrs. ago and loved them. Unfortunately, I blew out both my hiking shoes and boots in the same year. Found these Moab 3 Gore-Tex and have started breaking them in. So far, I love these equally. I buy a size 6.5 for a little extra room for thick socks for winter hiking and shoeing. Yes, they run a smidge wide but this allows for those thick socks. Great design bring lots of compliments from others. I wear them biking, hiking, and working currently. So far, they grip well on snow, but like all shoes, slip on ice. Highly recommend!
These are my boots after only three months, which is a little over 1000 miles on the Appalachian Trail. The missing toe section happened on the talus fields in the Shenandoah National Park. The rips on the right shoe finally happened after walking the rocky ridges of the Priest at night. Those tears on the left shoe are from Dragon’s Tooth. The burn marks are from the Smokies, when i had to walk for 3 miles in a trail that had turned into a stream and a cold snap froze my shoes solid. I put them by a fire to dry out - too close. The scuffs could be from all the summits in NC, like Mt. Albert in the rain. These boots have lived hard and while they might need to retire, if I do summit Katahdin, it’ll be in pair of Merrill’s.

I had bought a cheaper pair of Merrell's at a discount store years ago and wasn't impressed, but my coworkers swore by the Moab and I decided to give them a try. So glad I did. These were purchased primarily for work, where work is mountain maintenance - dirt trails, erosion ditches, single-track courses, water run-off systems, rocky scrambles - I get through it all in a day. I get a lot of all-weather exposure, too; and sometimes it feels like I see all four seasons in 24 hours. But I'm putting in miles on pavement, mountainside, and at the office for the last few weeks and man, I love these boots. The design, however, seems to have changed and not for the better. I immediately noticed the new boots had a different shape than my old pair, but didn’t really think much of it. Unfortunately within just the first few steps of my hike I noticed an uncomfortable rubbing on the back of my ankles. After less than a mile a large blister had developed in the back of my right ankle and a smaller one was forming on the left.
