Ive had these shoes about 5 months and tested them across the UK and in the alps. They have pros and cons. I would recommend them for someone looking to walk more flat ish trails. I would not recommend them for mountains where the angle of the trail is quite inclined.Pros :- waterproofing works as long as the water level doesn't go over the shoe- quite pretty- comfy on flat walks, and even harder trails/terrain like gravel or tarmac- sizing accurate- i think the sole will last a long time because of the rubber typeCons- because the tongue is so padded, the feet slide around when the terrain gets inclined. This is annoying and also means that its a bit scary wearing them on technical terrain because you cant trust your foot placements. If youre planning casual flatish walks, theyre fab. And its quite hard to find nice looking hiking shoes. They are good for that.If youre going up mountains, like in the lake district or the alps, get something different. That would have a more secure fit to the shoe.I can happily wear these for 10s of miles in Hampshire in somewhere like the new forest. They drove me mad they were so annoying in the lake district.

I recently bought the GTX version of the Moab to see if they would outlast the "waterproof" version, as far as the waterproofing goes. That is really my only issue with this shoe. The Moab has always been comfortable right out of the box. And the Vibram sole has never been a problem. It has always been the most durable part of the shoe. Like other reviews I have read, the "waterproof" version of this shoe doesn't last as long as it seems like it should. I hike somewhere between 4-5 miles, three days a week and I probably get a little over a year before the waterproofing fails. So I'm trying the Moab GTX to see if the waterproofing lasts longer. Time will tell whether I can give these shoes a 5-star rating.

After trying every other highly rated and recommended hiking shoe, and returning them because they just didnât work for me, I decided to circle back to Merrell. Years ago, I had a heavy, leather pair that served me well on a trip through Germany and held up over the cobblestone streets, etc. but I had tried and failed to find an equivalent â until the Moab 3. Right out of the box, I took them for a 3 mile test walk. Regular size 8 fit perfectly on my wide foot, with plenty of room in the toe box. I could adjust the laces for a comfortable fit over my high instep, but still cinch them at the ankle to lock my heels in with no slipping. Arch support was superb. The Moab is one of a very few shoes where you can get both Gore-Tex waterproofing and a Vibram sole. It is a heavier shoe with a very stiff feel underfoot, so it took some getting used to. For me, after clocking a total of 12 miles in the shoes, the weight didnât bother me anymore, but if you do urban hiking, you definitely feel like youâre âpoundingâ the pavement. The shoes really excel on softer trails where they provide sure footed confidence. I do wish the insole had a bit more cushioning in the forefoot because after about 3+ miles, my foot starts to tire in that area. Iâve toyed with the thought of switching out the insoles, but I donât want to mess with the arch support. So glad that I decided to give the Moab 3 a try. This shoe is legendary for a reason.

Awesome on the trail or at work. I work at a Hospital and Iâm on my feet all day. Great support, comfort, and durability! Much better arch support than earlier versions of Moabâs. Better construction too! The soles give better traction on rock, gravel, and wood. You donât feel the stones underneath your feet. On hard surface floors at work, they feel great . This is my 3rd pair of Moabâs . The Gore-Tex versions are nice, because your feet breath well and theyâre waterproof . Great for all Beginner through advanced trails that donât have technical climbing involved. For example, I could have used the Mid Top version of the Moab 3 Gore-Tex for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania in Mid August đ
I have owned several pairs of Moabs over the years, so I was excited to see them updated. As much as I love orange, and I really love orange, I miss the leather versions. I could better disguise them for work and travel. These shoes do feel differently than previous versions. I have hiked with them across different terrains from National Parks to local trails, as well worn them across more than a few urban landscapes. They feel more like a heavy duty sneaker or low profile hiking shoe than previous versions. The grip is excellent across pavement, rocks, snow, mud, etc. The "canvas" and mesh do hold the mud more than the leather shoes, so they need to be cleaned more frequently. The shoe is a hint tighter on my foot than the older versions, so they really need to be loosened on long flights. I find matching sock thickness is more important in this shoe. Thin compressions slide around and heavy wool can make the inside feel shorter. I'm interested to see if the shoe breaks in or retains the firmer quality. Lastly, the inside heal is different from previous versions around the Achilles. While that isn't an issue for me, I can see that worth investigating for some folks.
WOW! Iâm rapt to have come across these beauties - the brand Merrell on day one had me think for a few minutes in The Athletes Foot store in Chadstone Shopping Center, Victoria, and I walked around the store with a great staff member who assisted me with the great socks available while trying this brand out. The sheer comfort of this brand has made me buy these and 2 others for ânew replacement sparesâ. The other fantastic features with these shoes is the slip proof grips on the walk side, as well as mostly, if not, totally waterproof if out in the rain with these on, and they dry again very quick. The comfort to your feet when wearing is you sometimes forget theyâre even on you and can feel like slippers when sitting somewhere. My 1st pair gave me around 7 years of ... MoreWOW! My 1st pair gave me around 7 years of regular 3-5 hour use, and the 1st thing that usually wears out in them is the internal backing due to foot/leg rubbing, but you can often put something here for a âkeep goingâ comfort. 20/10, and I highly recommend these to all, and grab yourself a pair before they disappear for good.
I've been a long time user of the Moab, since the first moab shoe came out a long time ago now. The original shoe was extremely comfortable and perfect out fo the box and broke in well for everything from hiking to every day work and around town. So I figured I would try the newest Moab 3. Off the bat, I noticed a silght difference in the fit, especially in the heel area. The fabric in the heel is a two piece sewn together which now creates a hard "ridge line" around the heel pocket, which then rubs and pressures my heel, on my right foot. I'm using superfeet insoles, which i've always used in them. The softer midsole, I don't find is making the shoe any better. The original firmness of the midsole was perfect because it helped give just a little extra support. ... MoreI've been a long time user of the Moab, since the first moab shoe came out a long time ago now. The original firmness of the midsole was perfect because it helped give just a little extra support. Also, the rubber toecap on the left shoe was also placed at a weird angle on the toe of the shoe. My biggest gripe with Merrell, is that after being bought out, their product quality and it's control have really gone down hill. But I'm now stuck with the shoe. I don't see a reason to go changing the design of the original shoe that made this one of the best out there.
These were comfortable after the first step - they required zero breaking-in. I was only mildly concerned about ankle support, but after our first real hike, those concerns were completely out-of-mind.These are incredibly lightweight and great for walking around town, not just the wilderness. They held up great walking through tiny streams and the soles were grippy walking over wet stones. If I had to change anything, I might address 2 things:1) The laces require a double knot. For some reason, a single knot comes undone almost immediately, but I have yet to loosen a double knot unintentionally.2) The waterproofing gives these shoes a bit of a puffy look. I'm not sure if the standard width also does this, but I can say the wide width felt "fat". This is more ... MoreThese were comfortable after the first step - they required zero breaking-in. This is more of an aesthetic problem, and perhaps all waterproof boots have this issue, but I thought I'd at least mention it.
Merrell Men's Moab 3 Gore-Tex Low Hiker.Only had 2 weeks now and 1st impressions, solid feel and a little on heavier side for a shoe that I have ever had before. These fit, walk feel and perform pretty much like a low cut boot. The size fitment is fairly spot on and snug, so if you are insure, or an in between sizing, then suggest get one size up. I didnt know what to expect as I purchased solely online and were a replacement for my older Merrell walking jogger type shoes, which were a lot lighter. Now all these things mentioned are a positive and im fairly happy with my purchase, I just need to get used to the different feel and solid construction, and possibly keep these mainly for tracks and hiking rather than my daily walks around the burbs on the footpath. ... MoreMerrell Men's Moab 3 Gore-Tex Low Hiker.Only had 2 weeks now and 1st impressions, solid feel and a little on heavier side for a shoe that I have ever had before. I bought a Moab 3 GTX not directly from Merrell, but from an online retailer that is an official representative of Merrell, so the shoes are authentic. The sizing is totally off however. I know my sizing in at least 4 other brands - it's US12.5, or to be more precise in metric units it's 30.5cm. The US12.5 Merrell was too small, length wise, so I returned my initial order and replaced them for a US13, or 31cm, expecting that to have a perfect fit. To my surprise there's absolutely no difference in the way my feet sit in the shoes. I measured the insoles and there's the .5cm difference alright, but toes still rub the front of the shoe and that is with very thin socks. I measured the insoles and there's the .5cm difference alright, but toes still rub the front of the shoe and that is with very thin socks. While staying in place the shoes do feel really comfortable, great arch support, soft around the top of the ankle, overall quality is very good. However I know my feet well, my walking stride and cadence, and if I start moving in the shoes, in 15 minutes I'll have bloody ulcers on my toes and as diabetic, it's the last thing I want or need. Now I want to go even further up in sizing, but I wonder if 14 would be too big, which is a different can of worms, as both too small and too big shoes are really bad for you. My feet are not unusual, yes it's probably on the longer side, but they are not wide or narrow, they are normal. I have neutral pronation, with just a tad of slight supination. I'm a very active guy, that's not unusually tall or heavy (for where I live) and I wear at least 5-6 other brands actively and I have a lot of lifestyle sneakers, athletic sneakers that I practice different sports in, I have few pairs that are for hiking and trail running, I even wear boots from time to time, so it isn't a case of me fitting only in a single brand. This is my first Merrell and I'm completely bewildered by the sizing and fit of the shoe. I really like the Moab 3 GTX but I don't know what to do now. Should I try going to 14 or should I just look for another model or even a different brand altogether? My advice to anyone wanting to buy the shoes, if they fit you, go for it, as the quality seems great and they do feel comfortable, at least in the 5 minutes I spent in them while trying them, but if you can not find your perfect sizing, probably go for a different model.
