The feel of the magnesium body is great and much nicer to touch (especially on cold days) compared to metal. All in all this laptop is an amazing invest and one that I would say is worth every penny. It has never failed me and makes my life so much easier!!

My Microsoft surface book 2 dies extremely fast. Within 3 hrs, it goes from 100-50% and when using the tablet, it goes from 80-56% within 10 MINUTES. I literally just got it yesterday and I’ve been charging it ever since I got it. Also it takes the entire day to charge this thing. I got it and once I took it out the box and realized it needed to charge, I plugged it in; that was at 2pm and it finished charging at 9am TODAY. But when I plugged it out at 1pm today, when I looked at the battery, it went from 100-92 within 5 minutes, which is actually insane. An 8GB machine is great for productivity; but despite the discrete graphics processor, its not going to be a decent gaming machine. Don't fool yourself or try to talk yourself into thinking it will be. It won't...4. I have no idea who thought that small SSD's would be ok on any kind of machine. 256GB is fine for a productivity machine; but even then, depending on what you're trying to do, you will likely find you want additional storage. You WILL need an SSD card, and then you WILL need something called a HyperDrive to permanently store a microSSD card in the machine without the card sticking out of the side of the keyboard.5. The detach mechanism is a bit wonky, and I have never liked the way the device turns the screen around. Taking it physically OFF the base to reattach it is connects nearly everything, including the SSD storage where you will likely have your local OneDrive cache sitting, leaving apps and Windows itself to try to figure everything out when the device is reattached. If you can get your workflow down and minimize the number of times you need or want to flip the screen around, you're going to find that the Surface Book beats the Surface Pro in portability, largely due to the keyboard. Its much sturdier and more solid, and provides a better overall typing and trackpad experience than the Surface Pro. You will pay a premium for this, but if you're more into productivity and getting work done, the Surface Book will be a better buy for you in the long run.

I bought this laptop almost a year ago and I feel it’s about time I put my review after having a years worth of time with it. In short, it’s a terrible laptop. I’m a college student who bought this as an alternative to a drawing tablet. Considering I’d be able to have it for college and be able to draw with it out of class, I assumed it would be great. With other reviews, it seemed like it was fairly good for gaming as well. I bought this laptop and later that day, same day of purchase, I received a BSOD. A few hours later I also received a very weird thermometer icon. The entire laptop would shut off and display a white thermometer, which as someone who’s majoring in IT, I have never seen that on a laptop before. Assuming it meant the laptop was overheating, I checked to see if it was hot but the laptop wasn’t hot, nor cold. It was about room temperature, but the fans were loud and on max. Being that I’m not from the area and had to drive 5 hours to go to this Best Buy (the nearest is 5 hours away and out of state as there is not one in our small town), I returned it as I would not be able to get repairs for a faulty system later on. I exchanged the system at the store and received another. I took it home, it worked great. But wait, there’s more. A few days after purchase, the same incident started happening with the thermometer icon but I just left it and moved on since the store gave me their last surface book 2. I drove back, school started again, and I’m in class. I don’t know why both of my surface book 2’s fans were so loud (they weren’t overheating..) but this exchanged laptop’s fan was practically all you could hear during lectures. It was outrageously loud at times to where I’d have to turn the laptop off completely just to have some peace and quiet. Some more things I’d like to alert others if they plan to buy this laptop are:-This laptops battery does not last the advertised amount. I timed the battery with only one application open (google chrome) and my laptop lasted about 2.5 hours.-The charger is very faulty. Multiple times it would come out of the plug at home and in class, causing unnecessary trips to get up and plug it back in.-For such an expensive laptop, this laptop cannot even handle roblox. I tried several games such as overwatch, minecraft, and a few unity games, each time the gameā€˜s graphics would lag ridiculously. There was a dead part of the screen that would have a delayed change so I wouldn’t recommend this laptop if you wanted to play any game requiring aim. Thinking maybe the laptop can’t run unity games or games with such high graphics, I tried using roblox to see if there was a difference. To my surprise, the laptop still performed as terrible. The only way I could get these games to work a little bit better was to put them at the absolute lowest graphic setting and that just doesn’t sit well with me after what I paid for this laptop. It’s not a gaming laptop, but if it can’t even handle roblox then that’s pretty outrageous. In short, it can’t handle most games and if it does, you’ll be getting them at the lowest quality.-To this day is still get BSOD, each time with a different code. Usually at the worst times as well.-Theres barely any ports on this laptop. No hdmi, no Ethernet, just two USB and the charging port. Again, thats ridiculous for a laptop with such a price.-The screen randomly freezes. You won’t be able to do anything. It just freezes up. You canstill hear the audio playing but the entire display will freeze for a few moments. If it doesn’t fix by itself you’ll end up having to restart the laptop, loosing unsaved work.-The keyboard is starting to mess up, as in the keys are coming off and getting stuck as well as the lettering coming off. Space bar is extremely loose.-There are times where the laptop is in a good environment and good conditions and when I press the detach button, it just displays a red light and gives an error. Of course when you need to desperately detach the screen it just won’t come off.I would absolutely NOT recommend this laptop to ANYONE. Especially with such a price that it has with below normal performance. Don’t waste your money, there are so much better alternatives than this laptop. Honestly, my family’s 2012 laptop works better than this one, that really says something. I hope my review was helpful to some!

I first got the low-tier version of this device, which comes with a 7th gen Intel i5 CPU and an integrated GPU. It’s a great product for media consumption, office, and some minor 2D design work. However, working with two or more Adobe programs at the same time, while also running Chrome with multiple tabs open, and even more apps for playing music and chatting, was simply too much workload. So I got this version instead, and it’s not just the perfect match for MY workload, but also gives you the best bang for your buck! The dedicated GTX 1050 GPU isn’t just way more powerful than the integrated one, but also comes with its own 2GB of video memory. This means, that the CPU doesn’t have to share the 8GB system memory, which is important if you plan on running multiple memory demanding programs at the same time. If this still isn’t powerful enough for you, instead of going for the 16GB version of this model, I’d suggest getting the 15ā€ model instead. Not only does it come with the additional system memory, but also with an even more powerful GPU.Either way, you will get a well-built device. The keyboard feels good and has enough travel, and the trackpad is smooth and accurate. I would even go so far and say that both are good enough to write a 50+ pages thesis without feeling the need for an external keyboard and mouse. The speakers are also good, and deliver clear sound, but unfortunately they’re not the loudest. Depending on your needs, you might want to consider getting an external Bluetooth speaker. Last but not least the screen: With its aspect ratio of 3:2 at a resolution of 3000x2000 pixels, its high color accuracy and a peak brightness of 410 nits, this is simply one of the best screens out there. You will love it!Now I know this device is very expensive, and if you don’t use the 2-in-1 feature, you will definitely get more for your money with other laptops, such as the new Razer Blade 15. However, if you are a creative or you simply enjoy being able to de-attach the screen, and even if it’s just to read articles in vertical mode from the comfort of your couch, I say: Go for it.The Surface Book 2 is a great device, and probably the best 2-in-1.

You can find more value from other members of the surface family, and if you really need the horsepower, other systems like the Dell XPS 15 are boasting higher specs at a fraction of the cost.If you're a graphics illustrator like me, this device is an absolute disappointment. I've only had the device for less than a month and I have almost no incentives to stop using my dying Surface Pro 4 with a broken kickstand and dead pixel count that outnumber the boxes of cinnamon toast crunch my kids rip through in a standard month.Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the surface line of products and truly wish that microsoft afforded more money to the R&D team responsible for the Ntrig pen technology. I refuse to support the digitizer monopoly held by Wacom and ended up trading in my 27UHD Cintiq for my first surface pro 4. Bold claim, but I actually like my Surface Pro 4 better than any Wacom Bamboo, Intuos, or Cintiq product I have ever owned. I've even tried those oddball Huion tablets and they don't even begin to compare. So why then would I choose to go with the (still) heavily priced surface book 2?Simply, the prospect of a graphics card.Besides the fact that the windows 1903 update rendered it useless for a few weeks, I am genuinely not impressed by the performance. I understand I wasn't buying a full scale GTX chip, but I still find my surface gets bogged down quite easily when very little is actually using the GPU's processing power. I want to believe this is because in all my wisdom I bought a year+ old device, but I'm not over here trying to stream the newest call of duty running 4k @ 2048 FPS on my twitch stream. Even with gigabit ethernet running through the USBC (also tested with A), letting the Nvidia GPU perform all the video encoding, I still get lockups and sometimes crashes when trying to livestream Clip Studio Paint or Photoshop.Even when the graphics card isn't having a panic attack, I find the experience I bought the device for simply lackluster as compared to other members of the surface family or competitor systems. In fact, whoever thought that not including a kickstand and instead force my neck to rely on this wobbly keyboard hinge needs to have their product design credentials revoked. I had to end up cutting down a piece of styrofoam to prevent my screen from moving when trying to do fine ink work. Sure I could flip the screen around and have it rest in "studio mode", but I prefer my neck not sounding like a bag of agitated pop-rocks when I need to design a conceptual piece for a client 6-10 hours a day. There are solutions around this, but the fact all the surface pro devices have a built in kickstand, there isn't a good enough reason in my eyes they couldn't offer the redundancy, or, release a performance base that works with the surface pros should you need the a graphics card attachment for whatever reason. In my experience, the surface book is made for no one in particular and thereby fails to impress anyone. I have seen plenty of favorable reviews when using this device as a pretty rudimentary platform, but as soon as you get into more niche audiences, the jack of all trades façade really starts to show its cracks. It is for all these reasons that I cannot justify a score higher than 2/5. It's fair -- just..... fair.

[Rewarded Review] Its 2023, mine is still kicking
11 February 2023

Bought this 2019. I got a lemon, so luckily Microsoft store gave me a brand new one since the one in the package had a very faulty processor. It's 2023 and I'm still using it. Great performance, nice display. Very easy to remove the screen and make it tablet mode. Responsive screen with the pen. Overall a good laptop. Emphasis on 'good'. The one thing it is absolutely horrible and it's the major desing flaw is its wifi. It's 2023 and I'm still using it. Great performance, nice display. Very easy to remove the screen and make it tablet mode. Responsive screen with the pen. Overall a good laptop. Emphasis on 'good'. As a laptop/tablet, there're no issues. Once in dock mode, 100% useless internet. If you do NOT intend to use this with a docking system you are good. If you WANT to use is with the docking - look for another laptop.Since time has gone by, I don't believe this comment will do anything since the new laptops are more powerful and I bet/hope the wifi device is set in a less than convenient placement inside the laptop. But if you need to buy an older model to save some money or one that will take a bit of a beating, this one is up your alley. Again...not for docking. Definitely 100% not for docking. Good for everything else when in laptop/tablet mode.

[Rewarded Review] Potentially the best hybrid on the market
3 January 2019

My wife was in need of both a fairly robust laptop and a mid-range but larger screen tablet. After a lot of research this became the clear choice for her. It has more than enough laptop power she needs and can serve the light tablet duty as well.My history with Microsoft hardware goes back to their 1987 Mouse 2.0 (the original Dove bar) and they have always had excellent hardware, though sometimes drivers can be problematic. Their Sidewinder Pro is still one of the best joysticks I've ever owned. And their keyboards help save my wrists. The Surface Book is no exception. Their Sidewinder Pro is still one of the best joysticks I've ever owned. And their keyboards help save my wrists. The Surface Book is no exception. She only needed the i5 version, but it is still insanely fast and with the SSD, completely quiet. It has the sharpest and richest display I've seen on a laptop or tablet with such high resolution/pixel density that I actually back down the display resolution a bit to match my wife's preference. The keyboard is what you would expect from one of the top keyboard makers and while it has style, functionality is still first order. Weight and balance are good, which is important for a convertible. Battery life is phenomenal. In laptop mode, it will easily make it through a day with plenty to spare. Tablet mode has a shorter life, since most of the batteries are in the keyboard, still gave a solid 6-8 hours before auto-shutdown.And that brings us to the one reason this got 4 stars instead of 5 and the biggest quirk of the unit. When the tablet battery drops below 15%, the tablet will not unlatch from the keyboard and if you drain the tablet completely you will find yourself facing a *very* slow recharge. As in overnight charging before you can even get a power up. The solution seems to be the obvious, "Don't do that," of not letting the battery run down that far. That 's not very satisfactory in my opinion, though in their defense they do note that tablet mode is intended for lighter use and not an all day affair. Plus I do have a reputation for pushing hardware to its limit. What I'm doing is setting the power management to be 17 or 20 % to sleep when on battery to avoid the problem, though that too is a bit problematic on the Surface Book. If MS addresses this, then this is easily a 5-star tablet and the best in the field.Even so, I would still highly recommend this to anyone needing a fairly high powered, top quality laptop.

[Rewarded Review] Purchased Open Box "Excellent"....wasn't excellent
1 April 2021

I purchased an Open Box Excellent, but it was far from that. It just came in the mail an hour ago and this is what I found out.1. As soon as I opened the laptop, I see a dent at the top of the laptop near the camera which shows it was dropped while open or at an angle. Very noticeable.2. I see a dent on the bottom of the laptop beneath the keyboard as well as other scratches and marks.3. I assumed it would have had a little juice from being worked on since it was an open box but it didn't which was fine. I plug in the laptop and waited a min and then turned it on. While inspecting the laptop, I noticed it said battery 2 was charging but not battery 1(whatever that means). It kept making a da da ding noise as if it was trying to die but no notifications popped ...Ā MoreI purchased an Open Box Excellent, but it was far from that. While inspecting the laptop, I noticed it said battery 2 was charging but not battery 1(whatever that means). It kept making a da da ding noise as if it was trying to die but no notifications popped up. I also noticed after 10min, the battery didn't budge above 0%. At some point, the laptop went to sleep and it asked me for a password to log back in. I reset the computer and it allowed me back in. Apparently, an adm profile is still attached(probably repair people). I also noticed it asked me it reset the computer when it came back on. As for the battery, it now said battery 1 charging and not battery 2 and then 5min latter both began to charge.I normally by new, especially electronics, but I took a chance with hopes that it would have been in the condition Bestbuy advertised it. Needless to say, I'm bringing it back tonight or tomorrow.
