Bad quality for a DAR hardwood
17 June 2024

Covered in end splits, shakes, and chips. For a 'high quality' hardwood, it was definitely not high quality. Wasn't even placed on the right shelf.

DAR not good quality

I was disappointed that the DAR timber had a series of significant defects which made it useless for making quality furniture. As I bought it through click and collect and had it cut to fit in my car I was unable to return it.

Good timber - horrible barcode labels

Nothing Wrong with the timber it's the barcode labels - they are almost a permanent fixture.Tried to peel off where possible but they tear and leave paper and glue. Tried water, tried metho - ending up getting most off with sharp chisel and cleaning glue off with metho and then had to sand it to remove glue stain. Did not want to use anything stronger or better for removing glue residue (eucalyptus oil) for fear of staining the timber which would be clear varnished.Memo to Bunnings Management - use removable barcode labels

Good weather resistant hard wood
18 September 2021

I used this outdoors in a roof cable as decorative painted stripes of timber, to replace the pine the builder put there 20 years ago. I expect this stuff will last significantly longer than the pine which really started deteriorating after 12 years.

Love this timber.

I consider Tasmanian oak is one of the best, readily available hardwoods (in Australia). I use it for making furniture.I'll exclude merbau because it's as tough as steel; extremely difficult to use for anything but decking, gates and outdoor panels. The quality of the Tassie Oak from the supplier (Porta) is generally excellent.Of course a small percentage will start to bend and twist if it stays on the shelf for too long; I go to the store to select the best plank.

Misleading Label
23 June 2021

It's tricky with Click and Collect when you buy timber, as you can't select your purchase after inspecting it for yourself. These pieces were labelled 'select' grade, but had sap lines along each piece. This creates a weakness in the timber, and it can shatter when drilled.

Perfect timber for making furniture
22 August 2021

The perfect timber for making furniture - doesn’t require any planing, routers well, very smooth hard wearing surface. Found that the timber had been squared properly all around.

Tassie Oak

Like all timber sales, if you select crap timber you get crap timber. Generally the quality of the timber is quite good. I've used Tasmanian oak for a few small projects and I'm quite happy with it.

“Select” grade ash.
16 September 2021

The three pieces of select grade timber were taped together at pickup and I made the mistake of not inspecting them at the shop. When I got them home one had a machining defect, that looked like a rough gouge from the planing process. I was making picture frames so fortunately I could cut around it. The gouge was about a third of the way along the length and about 150 mm long and very obvious. Note to self, check your purchase.
