40L rolling duffle needs more handles

Unlike many others in the black hole line the smallest (40L) wheeled duffel really needs additional handles. I have taken this bag on many different kinds of trips at this point and it is truly awkward to catch from an luggage carousel or lift out of a trunk. I was very disappointed that despite the webbing anchor points there are no strap options available. I expect this bag to last for a long time (part of why I buy from Patagonia) so I'm also stuck with this design flaw for a long time. It looks like I will be making DIY handles. Would appreciate follow up from the design team - thanks

After having two carry-on bags disintegrate on me, I decided to up my game. Mostly happy with this Black Hole beast. The fabric seems indestructible, and the wheels and handle are super robust. The way the top flap sticks out around the edges will take some getting used to – I assume it is to protect the zipper. I am also not initially in love with how the zipper opening is smaller than the dimensions of the bag – – you certainly need to reach in as you pack. One review mentioned the handle is a bit short. At 5’8” I’m not having a problem.Even so, no buyers remorse.

I just received my Black Hole 40L wheeled duffel bag for an upcoming trip. It is very light for a wheeled bag. Handles are placed strategically for easy overhead storage on the plane (at 60 this is crucial). The retractable handle seems sturdy. The two larger wheels will make cobblestone roads easier to navigate. I will purchase on for my daughter. I believe the way you pack can make or break the trip! Thank you.

Great Bag - Short Handle
13 December 2023

I wanted to like this bag - it seemed like the perfect 'better option' from all those hard-sided, 4-wheeled carry-ons you see all over the airport. The bag is near perfect, but I had to return it - the handle was just too short. It felt short when I first took it out of the box, then I compared it with the handle on other carry-on bags and sure enough, it was quite a bit shorter; may not seem like much but it's just enough that it feels awkward and feels like you have to carry your hand super low - and I'm only 5-10".Patagonia - when you redesign this bag for the next release, you should promote that the handle is now longer because I'm sure I'm not the only person that didn't buy it because of that one feature.Great Bag Except:Needs: Longer HandleWants: Outside ... MoreI wanted to like this bag - it seemed like the perfect 'better option' from all those hard-sided, 4-wheeled carry-ons you see all over the airport. The bag is near perfect, but I had to return it - the handle was just too short. Great Medium Sized Rolling Duffle

Great bag. Very durable. Easy to wheel across the airport, sidewalk, and wherever you need to go. Unfortunately, on my last two flights, airport security made me go back to the check-in counter saying this bag was too large for a carry-on. I used it for almost two years as a carry-on before being turned away in security line two trips in a row at two different airports, LAX and SLC. Something to consider if you are wanting to ensure you have a carry-on sized bag.

Another great example of Patagonia making changes to a product that makes it ostensibly worse. There are a myriad of improvements that could be done to this product in all sizes. I have owned four. But Patagonia doesn't listen to customers anymore. Instead of adding a luggage tag or lockable zippers or a better handle, Patagonia decided to make the bag shorter and wider. I assume this is to make it fit better into overhead compartments which was rarely an issue. Volume doesn't seem to have changed. However, this process also caused the handle to now be inches shorter. In the case of my old 40l roller by about 3". Coupled with the bag being wider, one constantly hits the heel on their trailing foot now. I am 5"11 and thought my 5"6 girlfriend would be better off and gave it to her instead of burning it in an angry bonfire. Unfortunately it is equally bad for her. She's constantly hitting her foot, causing her shoe and sock to come off and the back to flip over. You could try and hold the handle on the side and hold the bag next to you but that's a bit of a workout, especially in big airports like Denver. We are now selling it on Craigslist since she has vowed to never use it again also.

Only bag that can keep up
28 October 2023

I pushed the limits of the Patagonia Black Hole® Wheeled Duffel Bag on my latest adventure. After landing at LaGuardia, I skated 5 miles on my longboard in pouring rain while pulling this bag behind me. Through puddles and all, this bag was able to keep up! The wheels glide smoothly and my gear stayed completely dry! Having a lighter color bag, it get a few cosmetic scuffs and scratches, but no true damage to report. After this I'm beyond impressed. I think this bag is going to last me a very long time! It's a solid 10/10!

Performed well on multi-country trip

We purchased this rolling duffel because of growing frustration with our hard-shell spinner; the wheel kept locking and the suitcase and attached laptop bag would topple over. I wanted to try something with a bit more flexibility and having had very good experiences with our Patagonia clothing, I was keen to try out the travel gear. I was fortunate to find the 40L Black Hole rolling duffel in Birch White (which is what is shown in the demonstration video on the website).Pros:1) Durability - after 10 days of travel through three southeast Asian countries with multiple flights and baggage transfers, there were several scuff marks but those were easily erased (mostly) with a wet wipe.2) Sufficient space - I made use of packing cubes for the first time and I would ... MoreWe purchased this rolling duffel because of growing frustration with our hard-shell spinner; the wheel kept locking and the suitcase and attached laptop bag would topple over. I was fortunate to find the 40L Black Hole rolling duffel in Birch White (which is what is shown in the demonstration video on the website).Pros:1) Durability - after 10 days of travel through three southeast Asian countries with multiple flights and baggage transfers, there were several scuff marks but those were easily erased (mostly) with a wet wipe.2) Sufficient space - I made use of packing cubes for the first time and I would highly recommend this since there are no section dividers inside the duffel. I am a medium height woman and was able to take 2 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of trousers and a skirt, 6 blouses/shirts, underwear, pajamas, ample bag of toiletries/medications, bag of electronic cables and adapters, travel umbrella, notebooks, and two large gift boxes of chocolates.3) Looks great - the light color looks stylish while the material looks tough; it was easy to spot amidst everyone's dark colored suitcases.4) Fully packed laptop backpack balances on the top of the duffel against the extendable handle when the duffel is full i.e., no toppling over.Cons:1) Tilts when held vertically by the fabric handle - the main inconvenience is walking down the airplane aisle, as it tends to hit the seat armrests. However, if you hold the duffel by the cloth handle and by the top of the extendable plastic rolling handle (i.e., using both hands), it can be held straight, or if you just hold it by the side handle and aim it forward but that is a little harder to control if it is heavy. This is not a problem if you have both hands free but if I were wrangling a two year old at the time, it would have been very challenging.2) When pulling it behind and to the right of me I knocked it with my right foot a few times but that may just be my gait.Bonus tip: I replaced my old mini-padlock-style travel locks with combination travel locks that work with a steel cable and that was easy to fit through the little zipper holes. I also purchased a steel cable to lock the bag to the hotel fixtures; probably a bit of overkill but always happy to make my bag a little less easy to steal than the next one.

Pretty darn nice
13 March 2024

This size is all I need for up to a week of travel for most seasons - winter might be tight depending on activities.I’ll echo what others have said about the handle length. Another inch/two would have been nice for those of us close to 6’.And it’s hard to tell from the pictures but the bottom of the bag is not flat inside. The handle rails are raised under the think liner material (for ease of repair I guess). Just an FYI kinda thing.I have an og black hole from their first runs and it’s still going strong so I expect nothing less from this version. It would be nice, as others have said, if it came with a nice luggage tag as it’s quite expensive.

Sturdy and deceptively spacious
6 November 2023

Got this wheeled duffel last minute before a 2-week trip through Japan. It served as my carry-on, and exceeded all my expectations. It fits in the overhead compartments easily, but can hold SO much stuff. I am a self-proclaimed luggage Tetris queen, and have to say I was shocked at just how much I could pack in. The interior straps help you synch down your contents, and I never had a hard time closing the zipper despite how full the bag was. And, the wheels and handle feel extra sturdy. Looking at purchasing another in a larger size for check-in luggage for future travel. Highly recommend!
