Rokinon's Xeen 14mm T3.1 Lens for Sony-E Mount is built specifically for use as a cinema lens. It features an internal focus design so that the lens does not change size while focusing, minimizing the appearance of breathing when changing focus. Each lens in the set is multi-coated for good contrast, glare prevention, and color-match to a factory standard, allowing you to assemble a set over time with minimal color shift. This 14mm lens provides what is considered a very wide angle of view on full-frame cameras, and a tighter angle of view on smaller formats. The lens features dual sided focus scales marked in feet, with dual-sided iris scales. The 9-bladed iris provides a rounded aperture for natural looking highlights and bokeh. The lens is a manual focus and iris lens, and does not have auto focus or auto iris capability. It incorporates cinema-style focus and iris gears that share the same position across the lenses in the Xeen set. The common 114mm front diameter allows for quick lens changes when using a matte box and focus accessories. The focus ring rotates 200° from close focus to infinity. This gives you a high degree of precision when adjusting focus.

I have the Xeen 14 3.1, and the other 1.5 Xeens at 24, 35, and 50. Unbelievable image quality. The way the glass elements interact with light and how the highlights are treated, along with how bright the lenses are makes any of them awesome. Sharpness you can find in a lot of subpar lenses, but finding a lens that interacts with light in a good way is not so easy. Most lenses are horrible in dealing with shots straight into the sun, for instance. I had another cheaper canon 35mm prime (with variable ND on front) on my URSA 4.6k camera and had a shot of someone doing yoga on the beach facing the sun and the image was just kind of lackluster. I was confused, thought it should look better, and just switched to the Xeen and the difference was night and day. That was the ... Amazing glass if youve got the money. I was going to purchase the CP2 lens series, but the Xeens have been more than incredible in what they do for a super reasonable price. Keep in mind that the 14mm will have a small amount of warping or fisheye effect. But the way it is on this lens isnt bad or too much. If you are shooting at most things, its my opinion that it makes those images even more appealing rather than weird or strange. If shooting lines or architecture, probably not the best lens for you. I have only spoken in high regards to this lens, never said anything bad about it, even though I saw someone elses comments on the 14mm which they thought wasnt as good as the other Xeens (probably right), but you wont really notice. I feel I can shoot at whatever aperature I choose and the Xeens are pretty dependable tone sharp across the board. The 14mm does have what I think is an inaccurate focus ringing you focus based on reading to the feet measurement on the ring. If you go by sight, youll be in better shape. For instance, i noticed if I set the ring at 6feet, and a subject is at 6ft, they will be slightly blurry. If I set to 4ft, the 6ft subject will be clear. If I set for about 10ft, the 15ft away subject will be clear. I havent done a test to make that official but this is how I work with the lens because of my past and still current experience of how this lens works. BUT!!! Keep this in mind, this is my GO TO lens for shooting towards the sun with fully closed aperture to get that glorious super sun ray look. Its pretty amazing.

For the record,: The cap was never broken by myself nor anybody else. This lens cap is DEFECTIVE. To add insult to injury was then offered a ridiculous sum to replace the lens cap with exorbitant shipping costs. No but thanks. And to think I was going to purchase an entire set of Rokinon's cine lenses. Not if this is the sort of customer care I can expect.

The only reason not to give the Rokinon Cine 14mm five stars is, from my point of view, the noticeable linear distortion. It is not for architectural photos or any other where rectilinearity is important. However, in every other situation it performs beautifully. Solidly built, relatively light weight, very smooth aperture and focus; true color, and excellent contrasty black and white. Perfect interior grab-shot lens that, in spite of being totally manual, works precisely with the Canon 5D Mark II in general, program, or aperture priority modes. I set the lens at T3.1 and focus just short of infinity: I never have to check focus again and have no need to change the T-stop for the general photography I do. But this lens is a surprise and a very pleasant one; the first non-camera manufacturer's lens I've purchased. I'm looking seriously now at the Rokinon 35mm T1.5!

I was a little weary of buying such an inexpensive wide angle lens that I had not physically used, and initially I was disappointed with the performance of the lens because I put it on my 5D MarkII. The lens is so wide and I believe that on the 5D because it is full frame and uses line skipping to get the resolution down to 1080p that I was seeing a lot of aliasing on edges of objects and structures. Then I put this lens on a Canon C100 and the combination of the crop factor of the C100 and the better resolution, performance and technique for resolving the 1080p image the performance was wonderful. Then I put this lens on a Canon C100 and the combination of the crop factor of the C100 and the better resolution, performance and technique for resolving the 1080p image the performance was wonderful. This lens is not as sharp as the Canon L-Series glass but it's about 1/5 the price, has manual aperture, and geared focus and aperture barrels with cine marking on the side along with a really long barrel rotation which makes actually makes it hard to rack focus smoothly in one move without a follow focus. That being said, the long barrel throw is nice and for how wide this lens is most of the time I would be using this at infinity for architectural shooting for corporate or commercial projects or for super wide establishing shots. And for that it performs wonderfully. The construction of the lens feels solid and the barrel rotation for both aperture and focus is smooth with a nice amount of drag to ease into and out of racks. The edge distortion on a full frame sensor definitely betray's how wide this lens is, and while it's not as nice as the rectilinear Canon glass it isn't totally unpleasant and on a crop sensor like the C100 I didn't notice enough distortion to be of concern for most corporate/commercial shooting. Overall this is a good value lens with nice features, though I wouldn't use it on a DSLR where the method for recording 1080p is line skipping because I think that is what is causing the massive amount of aliasing, I did not see the same issue on the Canon C100. The 5D MarkIII might offer better performance since it doesn't do the same line skipping as the MarkII.
First I have to say that I am very happy with this lens. I purchased it primariily for still use, though video is a second consideration. (I started off on 8mm film and 35mm still cameras with manual everything so I gravitate towards cine lenses) I tend to leave it on my camera all the time now, only reaching for my faster Canon 35mm when it's low light, or for a tele when I spy a critter I want to shoot. However, this is a heavy lens. The front element is huge. It must weigh a pound by itself. The metal construction of the body only adds to the heft. This is reassuring from a quality and durability standpoint, but annoying when you are carrying it. It does take great shots. At first I felt it was a bit too barrel distorted. And this is evident in a shot with a lot of rectilinear objects. However it also adds a certain hugeness to the shot. It grabs color and contrast very well. If you work the iris and focus you can get some nice deep focus shots where everything is pretty sharp. I'd also ding it for the inablity to use screw on filters. Many times I wish I could use a ND or polarizing filter, but the huge element at the front precludes this. Heck even with a full cine setup on rails you might have a hard time getting any kind of filter in front without vignetting.
Good, clean lenses that match. Had them for a few years and have had nothing but impressed clients. The fact that Duclos in LA sells and services these lenses should tell you a lot about their quality and overall industry acceptance. For the price, above excellent lens set.
This lens is superior to the previous Rokinon cine lens kit I owned. The Xeens optics are much cleaner and over all more crisp on the focus. The backgrounds have a beautiful depth to them. Short of upgrading to zeiss cine lenses these are the jam! amazing bang for your buck!
While these lenses do give some good images for the money, it's useless when the focus ring doesn't work. Ive had this set for less than 2 years. There is something loose inside the 35mm lens that rattles if you move it at all and the focus ring rotates but doesn't turn the elements. I contacted customer service and they said that it wouldn't be covered under warranty. There is not a mark on the lens, it's in pristine condition. One of the other lenses in the set also has something rattling in it but it still works as it should for now. Completely disappointed. Don't buy unless you are able to repair yourself because obviously you'll need to do that if this is the way they treat their customers.
So far, I've been using this only for shooting video (short films, stop motion animations, and promotional/commercial video); and I knew it was going to be wide, but it's still bafflingly wide when I see it on my camera. I feel like a lot of the photos/video taken with this lens to show how wide it can be are taken outside (where it's harder to tell), but I'd recommend looking at the indoor photos taken with it to get a better picture of how wide it is, and how much distortion there can be at the edges. Very sharp, and very deep focus - closed down around f/22, practically everything is in focus from about a foot out to infinity. Focus wheel is a little slow (as it it takes more revolutions to rack focus) but I appreciate that extra distance when it's in a rig as ... Very fast racks might be more difficult but I haven't run into that being a problem yet. I haven't found it breathes noticeably at all. The lens body is nice and heavy and of comparably hefty construction to EF L series canon lenses. Loving the declicked aperture!
I am a film student and I got this lens to shoot both personal projects and material for my reel. It looks fantastic on my Canon 600D with the crop frame. Very sharp even wide open, and you really do need to shoot it wide open if you're indoors and don't have an expensive light set up. The slight mustache distortion is noticeable even on the crop frame sensor but not overbearing. I actually really like the look of it most of the time. I have also used an adaptor to put this lens on the Sony FS-100 and it's still fantastic. I didn't get any vignetting and the sharpness was still good wide open. The two things keeping this lens from getting five stars is the design of the front and the focus ring. The large glass element at the front of the lens looks gorgeous but makes it impossible to use any conventional filters, most notably ND. In bright daylight without the ability to use ND you lose control of where you want to set you aperture. Basically you have to close it down much farther than you might want to. Also the Focus draw is really too long. With a 14mm the depth of field is fairly long most of the time anyways and the focus draw on this lens is close to 300 degrees! When the focus is set near infinity you can turn the focus ring nearly 90 degrees and not perceive any noticeable difference in the sharpness of your subject. My peers have been very impressed with my Rokinon lenses over the last couple months and one of them will be borrowing them to use on the Red Epic this weekend for his senior project. The price of this lens is very good and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested in working with some very sharp prime glass at a very reasonable price.
