I bought this shoe for more than its intended purpose which is supposed to be trail running. I did want a shoe I could trail run in but I also wanted something more and I've definitely abused these shoes, wearing them daily while travelling for over a month and putting lots of kms on city sidewalks as well as on trails. They've generally been great and as promised for a trail shoe. No point in repeating Salomon's descriptors, they're pretty accurate and reasonable. The few things I might add are:- I like a shoe with no seams in the heel cup. Check. And the inner material in the heel cup has proven durable, and not worn through.- The synthetic material in the uppers (NON-Goretex model) is non-absorbent but fast drying. In rain and through puddles, the uppers did not absorb any moisture, Instead my socks got wet, but on the other hand both socks and uppers all dried very quickly!- I was a bit hesitant about the thin wiry laces and tightening system, and whether lace pressure would be distributed evenly over the top of the foot and stay tight. I was pleasantly surprised. It works. The shoes have also been pretty good as a general use shoe. The downside has been that the soft grippy soles, indeed good on trails, are quite soft for pavement and have worn down very rapidly in spots, in turn affecting the comfort. But that's mainly my abuse, not misrepresentation of the shoe. The soles are definitely ok for regular dirt, but not really suited for pavement or sidewalks. It's a bit less clear how they wear when used regularly on rocky surfaces.

Great shoes out of the box, well designed, not flashy, super comfortable. Got these for a trip to Europe which would involve a lot of walking, city streets, gravel roads, trails, etc. They were awesome for the first few days, I could walk in them all day in total comfort, and they looked good! Then one day on an early morning hike I walked through some wet grass, just dewey morning grass, not full soak water crossing, literally a damp morning dew on short grass...and within a few minutes I could feel the moisture seeping into the shoes. Not a ton of moisture, but my socks were definitely wet when I took the shoes off later. That was not a big deal to me. They were still comfy and looked good, I could deal with some moisture in my shoe. But then the smell ... MoreGreat shoes out of the box, well designed, not flashy, super comfortable. The thing that makes these unwearable is the smell that occurs after any moisture enters the shoe.....a horrendous ammonia/cat pee odor!! Like wow do these shoes STINK!! I can no longer wear them, they just REEK of cat pee, I've tried cleaning them, removing and replacing the insole, nothing works. They just STINK. And this is not the first time this has happened with a pair of Salomons, I have thrown out another pair that also suffered from this cat pee smell issue. It's definitely NOT my feet, or my socks, or anything to do with my own personal body odor, it is these shoes, something in them just REEKS of cat pee after any kind of moisture enters the shoe, and no matter how careful you are with drying them out or cleaning them afterwards, they will continue to STINK FOREVER! This is the last pair of Salomons I will ever buy. Just not worth the money for less than a week of wearing. BUYER BEWARE!!!!

Owned a few similar from Salomon. Now this pair, again with quicklace. The shoe is comfortable, sole is solid with good grip. However, the shoe has a bad choice of lacing system. The thin string which consists the lacing simply cuts through the fabric on top of the foot during normal waking. Both the lacing and the shoe fabrics are in constant friction and of course the thin lace simply slices a trench hole across the shoe like a saw. This is my maybe 4th Samolon with the same lacing system and same defect occurs each time. I deliberately don’t tie them tight and same thing happens. The thin lacing across the front also collects all the dust and like a barrier lines it across the shoe, while also digging the hole. I have purchased nearly 10 pairs of XA Pro 3D shoes over the years and have recently bought 5 more pairs to support an AT through hike beginning in late March ‘23. They fit my feet well and I have accumulated over 2000 miles on them. However, there is a major design and/or manufacturing flaw in them. Every single pair encountered the following pre-mature failure in both shoes well before the soles wore out. The cloth, lace loop closest to the pinky toe gets sawed through over time by the auto lace itself! (See photo of routine failure). All of the other lace loops have a protective plastic insert in them to prevent this and never have I encountered a lace loop failure in any loops containing the insert. All of the other lace loops have a protective plastic insert in them to prevent this and never have I encountered a lace loop failure in any loops containing the insert. Without this loop in the lacing system, your foot slides more in the toe box causing increased likelihood of blisters…. an aggravation I am not looking forward to on my upcoming through hike. If any of the pairs of new shoes develop this failure on my hike, can I return them for warranty and get a new pair sent to me? I like the shoes but hate having to deal with this failure mode. I can’t fix the loop and I can’t risk changing shoes at this point before my hike. Why can’t they be made with a plastic insert in this lace loop? I certainly hope this wasn’t planned to be manufactured obsolescence. Frustrated customer!
I bought this shoe for an upcoming hiking trip to the Dolomites of northern Italy. This was the first time I have worn this model, but I have worn several other Salomon trail runner shoes in the past. I have a narrow foot with a low arch and these shoes fit me very well. I have owned three versions of the speedcross, which is a show I love to run in, but the tread of the speedcross is not the best for rocky or gravelly terrain, which is the terrain in the dolomites. I found the XA Pro 3D V8 to be perfect for the terrain and surface conditions. The grip is excellent on rock and gravel, the tread is more durable on rock and gravel, and the shoe is a little more stable and protective for those surfaces and ground types as well. This shoe is supportive and feels like a hybrid hiking shoe/running shoe. I have mostly hiked in it, but I have done a little running in it and it is comfortable to run in. I think if I was going to be running a long distance (10+ miles) I might go with something that has a little more of a rockered shape, to propel you forward.
I have worn XA Pros exclusively for several years because they are comfortable, very durable/long wearing, and look pretty darn good IMO. I don’t use them for trail running or hiking- these are just my everyday shoe. This last pair had a weird fit, the materials (especially the inside of the tongue) were noticeably more abrasive, and the outer material started wearing and breaking down at the toe box crease within a few months. I’ve NEVER had that with Salomon before! Now the rubber trim pieces are peeling away, while there’s barely any wear to the sole tread. Yes, I’ve been wearing these for about a year; but these have worn out much faster than any other pair before. It almost seems like corners were cut in favor of less expensive materials. I've owned 3 pairs of these shoes because the seem like a good hybrid for hiking and trail running....and I honestly thought that they were pretty good....until I bought a pair of Altra Olympus 4 trail runners. The step up in quality and performance is enough to take the Salomon shoe from a 4 ish rating to a 2. Here are the areas that I've found the Salomon XA Pro to be lacking.First, it doesn't last very long (the tread or the materials). I had 3 pairs of these because I wore out the tread and uppers on each pair within a year. I've had one pair of Altra's now for 3 years and see very little wear and tear. Second, the foot comfort is no where near that of the Altra's. Second, the foot comfort is no where near that of the Altra's. The wider and thicker base of a true trail running shoe is much more comfortable when running and/or hiking. Even though the Salomon is a fairly beefy shoe I get much more protection from rocks and general foot fatigue with the wider, lighter and thicker Altra's. The difference is so pronounced that I decided to take the Altra's on a 30 mile backpacking trip this month. My feet have never felt better when backpacking with any other shoe. Stable, grippy, and light...amazing how the Altra's make these Salomons look like meh. Lastly, this is probably just me but I found myself stubbing my toe and/or tripping quite a bit when running with the Salomon's...like 2 or 3 times per 5 miles. I don't think I tripped once in the first 40 miles running in the Altra's. Not sure if it's the difference in drop, the lower weight or the nice spring you get when running in the Altra's.....don't really care, the Salomon's are a tripping hazard for me relative to the Altra's. I noticed a similar improvement when backpacking. So while the Salomon's aren't a terrible shoe, for the price point there are other shoes that are significantly better. The Altra is just the example that I had to compare with, I'm guessing that any wide body, low drop, light weight trail runner is a major step up to these shoes. Don't let the weird look of trail runners or the seemingly one sport design fool you. Legit trail running shoes are amazing all round shoes.
I bought these because Solomon discontinued my previous favorite shoe the X Ultra 3 Low GTX hiker. I'm on my second pair of the older model but headed to Europe soon and wanted a new fresh pair for that trip. Solomon's fit my D width foot extremely well and they are comfortable and can be worn all day for knocking about or hiking in the Rocky Mountains or some other favorite Colorado location. So after a lot of research I found these that looked very similar, share the same lacing setup and similar tread. Not carried in my local store so I ordered online during the XXV sale. I was nervous because Solomon has added a wide size so I was thinking if they change the shoe that the regular might now be too narrow.Well it wasn't too narrow in fact they fit just like the ... MoreI bought these because Solomon discontinued my previous favorite shoe the X Ultra 3 Low GTX hiker. I haven't worn them that much because I'm saving them for my trip but I have enough experience with the brand that I know they are my new go to shoe for hiking. So happy I didn't have to look for another brand! The shoes are light, cool, durable, comfortable and good looking! The lacing system is a snap and hold the foot securely!
This is the first time I have worn Soloman shoes and I really like them.I walk and hike enough miles per day to wear out a light hiker in 4-5 months, so 2 pair per year. Mostly just on mixed concrete and trails in rolling hills.I had been wearing another brand of hiker for several years and I was happy with them but then they unexpectedly changed the 3 models I repeatedly bought. They removed a pad in the back of the ankle that left an exposed thread seam that acted like a saw. How can a shoe designer make a change like that in the most obvious place on a shoe to cause blisters. Anyway. So I tried Soloman.I wear an extra wide and the Soloman trail runner had that width. Not every brand does. Also the inside of the shoe fits like a glove which is important for reducing friction, thus reducing blisters (yes, I hate blisters). There is padding everywhere I need it and none where I don’t. The lugs provide good grip on every surface. The Soloman was the same size and width as I wear in all my shoes. I like everything about this shoe.Since it rains a lot in the winter in Northern California where I live, my next step is to try the waterproof goretex version of this trail runner this winter. If the waterproof model feels as good as this non-waterproof model, then I can foresee myself sticking with this SolomanXA Pro line for a long time. I need both models. When I find a shoe that works for me I stick with it.
Man, was I stoked after i received the redesigned version of this shoe last year. I've been wearing previous models for years and years each with heavy use on rough terrain, walking, running, working, daily shoes, even working on construction area's was a pleasure with these previous models. This newer model, on the contrary to other's experiences, still fit great for me. However, the quality of the sole, waterproofing material and the shoe in overall went down like a comet hitting earth. Also a big let down, as these shoes used to be my favourite of all time and now I'll have to find new ones to replace them. Not buying these again unfortunately and I would definitely recommend others not to buy these either. Sorry Salomon, but you've lost a dedicated Xa 3d Pro Goretex Customer :(.
