I wear a size 9 but bought a 9.5 locally because I am wearing liners with my hiking socks. Felt great but I was worried they might be too tight a week into my 500 mile hike due to swollen feet. So I ordered another pair from Moosejaw ($30 less than I what I paid locally) but this time in a size 10. I immediately noticed the arch support felt like it was too close to my heel, there was some pressure in back portion of my arch that I did not feel in the 9.5. After buying these I realized breakage of a lace in the middle of nowhere could be a bad thing. There are examples on the web of people breaking these "kevlar" laces. My order was processed and shipped quickly and accurately, Moosejaw is a good company to work with and I like the little "dividends" I get with each order.

I have a love/hate relationship with these shoes.I just finished 140 miles in these hiking the bottom two-thirds of the JMT. They worked well and were comfortable and supportive, but the quick lace system does not work well. Every time I put them on and tightened the laces, I would have to retighten at least one of them one or two more times before it would stay tight. This was a particular pain with a pack on and gaiters over the boots - tighten the shoes, hike 100 yards, find a place for my trekking poles, loosen gaiters, tighten shoes, replace gaiters, fix pack, grab poles, repeat until they stay tight. Once tight, the shoes were great.I was able to make stream crossings easily by removing my socks and wearing the shoes. Another sock change in about an hour and my shoes were dry about two hours later. In camp, I loosened the laces and felt like I had slippers on.I did make a mistake with insoles. I have used green Superfeet for years in my running shoes and therefore thought they would work fine in the Salomons. Despite having hiked about 70 miles in the shoes prior to the JMT hike, I ended up with blisters on my arches about a week into the JMT. I should have used lower volume Superfeet or stuck with the Salomon insoles. If it wasn't for the loosening laces, I think this would be a great shoe.

These are the second pair of these shoes I have bought. The first were Gortex waterproof. I didn't feel I needed these for the second pair. They are a little lighter and cooler than teh Gortex pair so good in the heat. That said I walked the Camino in the others and they were fine.Very comfortable, good grip on wet and slippery surfaces and firm sole to prevent sharp stones/rocks pressing through the sole. They support the sole well and are a good average width fit. They do come up a bit small as I am normally a 8.5 but have gone for a size 10 this time.A good colour and style and can be worn as a casual shoe/trainer as well as a functional walking/trekking show. Would wear on tough trekking such as Snowdon.

I bought these to use mainly as a light weight summer trail walking shoe (as my Salomon 4d Gtx boots are too warm in summer). The XA Pro is a good quality trainer, with grippy sole, a snug fit and nifty quick release laces. My feet got quickly soaked on a damp morning woodland walk through long grass, maybe the gtx version would’ve faired better- but hey, you expect to get wet on a drizzly walk! After a couple of 6 or 7 mile trail walks, involving some stoney sections, I realised Ineeded something with a bit morerigidity/protection in the sole than the XA prohas - but that’s on me.
I bought these shoes for a long-distance AT hike and they have been very good to me and my feet. It almost feels as if you have nothing on your feet, and yet they provide excellent protection. Their bottoms and toe caps are very durable and have protected me very well from hard surfaces that I have come across and hit in my clumsy fashion of hiking. They are very comfortable and their ventilation is great. Once they get wet (as any pair will in heavy rain) they are very good at drying out quickly.I love the grip of these shoes. On many occasions I have stayed on my feet because of their contragrip when I should have ended up flat on my face or behind. After 41 days of hiking the AT, I did not have any nasty falls.I also liked their quicklace system. After 41 days of hiking the AT, I did not have any nasty falls.I also liked their quicklace system. At first I thought that I wasn't going to be a fan, but then I quickly grew to love it. It made putting on my shoes hassle-free and they always felt comfortably snug on my feet. After 469 miles of hiking in them (and however many miles I put in before the AT) they are still in good shape. A little side piece got torn off on my left shoe but it is only an aesthetic problem, if that. The mesh top has also begun to rip on my right shoe but everything is still pretty much intact. I saw the wear-and-tear emerging at about mile 400, and that's expected out of hiking shoes (they say a pair of shoes will last about 500 miles on the AT). I believe that my pair has at least 100 miles more to go, so they are exceeding expectation.I love these shoes (and they pair perfectly with a pair of Darn Tough socks!).
I have owned the XA Pro 3D for 5 years and I'm still wearing it daily. I originally bought the shoe to use in mud runs (Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, etc) and it performed exceptional. The lacing system is very convenient for getting the shoe on and off during races. There have been no glue joint problems or lacing eyelid breaks. No complaints on the comfortability of the shoe. I never got a blister or had sore feet. In my opinion you really do get your money’s worth when you purchase a Solomon shoe. They are by far my number one suggestion to anybody looking for a high quality performance shoe. Get fitted and get a pair you won’t be disappointed!
I have been a walker for over 12 years. I have worn numerous brands and with differing results. I have never written a review of any shoe. The XA Pro 3D is the best shoe I have used. A solid platform without being too firm. Yes, the toe box is a little tighter than some but works fine for me. There is enough of an arch that it provides support without being too "high". I have never had a pair of shoes I have worn straight out of the box that are as comfortable and supportive. Too many walking/trail type shoes are too soft and do not offer serious support. I have worn this pair for two straight weeks and have had no "hot spots", blisters, rubs, or lack of comfort. I understand needing a break now and then but sometimes when the California weather is really nice, you just want to be out there.I do not use my walking pair for general use until they are being replaced. I will return to Solomon for my next shoes. This is a first class product from start to finish and the price point is better than most for the product you receive.

He raved about his current pair, Salomon XA Pro 3D Trail Running Shoes, and said he was going to buy another pair of the same. He was a strong hiker. A twice-a-week, by himself, in the mountains sort of guy who after we separated on summit of Sawteeth headed down to the lakes intending to take the “Elevator” trail up to the col btw Blake and Colvin and then hike back to his car. Probably about a 20mi RT with 5-6k of elevation gain. So, I was in need, had a recommendation from a hiker who was stronger than I am, and decided to go with it. Mine arrived Friday, early, so I sat around mostly at my computer all day wearing these, hoping that “sitting at a computer” would count towards my break in period. Saturday early I met up with friends and by 7:00 am we were setting out for Allen Mountain -- about a 19 mi RT with about a 3500 ft elevation gain. I know. Crazy. My friends rolled their eyes when they realized I was wearing brand new “boots.”The bottom-line here is that they not only fit well, but they fit as if they were grabbing my foot. I wore the stock inserts plus a pair of medium-weight Smartwool Hiking Socks. No blisters. No red spots. Nice support all over. I greatly appreciated the toe box -- I was able to force my toe into several cracks during the ascent up the slide part of the “trail” to Allen’s summit. No bruised toes! Likewise, although the Allen RT is not especially rocky, I was hiking in the ADK and most of the trails had the usual ADK proportion of rocks and mud. No sore foot bottoms. The bottoms were as grippy as anything I have worn. The ADKs tend to be wet. These did okay on “wet” as long as the wet rocks were not also “green and slimy” (lots of that at certain points this past weekend). My pair is NOT GoreTex. I thought about this before buying them and decided that my past experience with GoreTex “trail runners” was not all that positive as even gaiters did not prevent the ADK mud and muck from running over the tops of my shoes and after that my feet would be wet most of the rest of the day. However, this all TURNED OUT BETTER THAN EXPECTED. Saturday was dry by “local standards” and only twice did the mud and muck run over the tops of my shoes enabling the water to run in through my socks to my feet. Both times the lack of Gortex enabled my foot, sock, and shoe combo to dry out. By the time I reached the car, the socks were not notably wetter than they would have been from perspiration. Having climbed all of the high peaks in the ADKs at least 7 times, I don’t know if I can recall a similarly long day with dryer feet.A final note. As I ordered these from REI I also ordered two pairs of Salomon’s “Speedcross” trail runners. One size 11 and one size 11.5. The 11’s were tighter than my size 11 XA Pros. The 11.5’s were about the same as the 11 XA Pros. Both shoes felt tighter on the front of the foot than did the XA Pros. Both soles felt a lot thinner. The toe boxes were definitely not nearly as sturdy as the XA Pros. I made the decision, literally out of the box, to wear the XA Pros the next day and to send both pairs of Speedcross Trail Runners back to REI.
To start, I bought this shoe in 2016 so this review covers that model. I waited this long because I believe in a long trial period before I submit a review. I needed a shoe that met a very specific set of needs and this is the shoe that was recommended by the REI sales associate. I just finished competing in the Bataan Memorial Death March. I needed a shoe that was lighter weight than a hiking boot, that would perform in sand, that would support my weight plus a 40 pound pack, and allow me to jog along the way. This shoe fit the bill. It required a very short break in period. It did well on the training days up to 20 miles on roads, cement, and trails. It worked like a champ during the actual event in White Sands, NM. The only terrain it didn't perform well in is wet mud. The mud stuck to the tread on the bottom and made the shoes heavy and hard to run in. But that wasn't the terrain I purchased them for so I won't knock the shoe for that.I've seen a few reviews about the shoe falling apart but that hasn't been my experience after putting a few hundred miles on them. Maybe that's the newer model.Overall, the shoe has worked as advertised.
These shoes are lightweight and rugged. They have excellent torsional rigidity and have a decent tread pattern although the tread is not very deep. The toe cap is very rugged which was very helpful on rocky terrain. I opted for the non waterproof model which lets water in quickly but also dries quickly. The asymmetrical Kevlar laces do not allow for easy changes of the lacing pattern which isn’t ideal. However, they will never wear through. The shoe fabric wore out far faster than the laces although I did not wear them long enough to develop the gaping holes that I have seen in some pictures of heavily worn pairs. The heel linings may rip with prolonged use.I have a love hate relationship with these shoes. While there were times I hated them, I used four pairs ... MoreThese shoes are lightweight and rugged. The heel linings may rip with prolonged use.I have a love hate relationship with these shoes. While there were times I hated them, I used four pairs from Hot Springs, NC to Mt. Katahdin. Last year’s model had a tongue construction that wrapped across the top of your foot and was sewn in along the bottom in two places on each side. I had read that some people had trouble with these causing pain in the sides of the feet. My first pair, which I bought in Hot Springs, NC, had this style tongue. The tongue itself actually folded over itself on top of my foot and created some significant pressure and pain. I actually had to change the lacing pattern to alleviate this situation which I did on the side of the road one day. There is a great You Tube video on how to do this which I had watched the night before. When I got to Daleville, VA, I went to the outfitter and asked about a replacement pair. They had a pair in my size and what I first noticed was that Salomon had changed the tongue construction of this year’s model to a more traditional design. While the clerk at the store was less than helpful, he did give me the number for Salomon customer service who authorized him to replace the old pair for free. Thank you Salomon! I tend to wear shoes right on the ball of my foot based on how I walk. By the time I had hiked 550 miles in this pair, I could feel every stone through the sole so rather than hiking the last 100 miles of Pennsylvania in those, the really rocky part, I had REI send me a new pair which I started wearing in Port Clinton. The toe box of this pair started coming apart from the sole in southern Vermont. A call to REI about that resulted in another replacement pair being sent to me. I used that pair for the rest of the trip, about 500 miles and am still using them now. They have held up very well. Thanks REI! These shoes may rip in the heel lining like many other shoes. I solved this problem by lining the heel of the shoe with a piece of gorilla (duct) tape. After doing this, I had no trouble with the heel lining. While I thought of trying different shoes along the way, I wound up sticking with the XA Pros. With the issues with the earlier tongue style being resolved by Salomon, I highly recommend these trail runners for any long distance hiking adventure.
