I bought this shoe for more than its intended purpose which is supposed to be trail running. I did want a shoe I could trail run in but I also wanted something more and I've definitely abused these shoes, wearing them daily while travelling for over a month and putting lots of kms on city sidewalks as well as on trails. They've generally been great and as promised for a trail shoe. No point in repeating Salomon's descriptors, they're pretty accurate and reasonable. The few things I might add are:- I like a shoe with no seams in the heel cup. Check. And the inner material in the heel cup has proven durable, and not worn through.- The synthetic material in the uppers (NON-Goretex model) is non-absorbent but fast drying. In rain and through puddles, the uppers did not absorb any moisture, Instead my socks got wet, but on the other hand both socks and uppers all dried very quickly!- I was a bit hesitant about the thin wiry laces and tightening system, and whether lace pressure would be distributed evenly over the top of the foot and stay tight. I was pleasantly surprised. It works. The shoes have also been pretty good as a general use shoe. The downside has been that the soft grippy soles, indeed good on trails, are quite soft for pavement and have worn down very rapidly in spots, in turn affecting the comfort. But that's mainly my abuse, not misrepresentation of the shoe. The soles are definitely ok for regular dirt, but not really suited for pavement or sidewalks. It's a bit less clear how they wear when used regularly on rocky surfaces.

I've been wearing XA Pro 3Ds for over ten years. I climb Camelback Mountain, Phoenix, AZ, USA, every day. It is a steep, rocky trail rated one step short of technical. Every step is a sharp granite rock ranging from the size of a microwave to a dinner table. The support in the toe, heel, and arch on this shoe are the best of any shoe I've worn. Most of the regular hikers wear them. I've trashed 3-4 pairs a year and found nothing as long lasting, comfortable, and sticky-on-the-rocks as these. For easier trails (smoother footing), like the Grand Canyon, Sedona, or Mt Humphrey, I love the Sense Ride 4. It's lighter, more comfortable and just as sticky--But they don't hold up on the tough trails like Camelback.

Love the support, especially how the lacing system keeps my foot stable both while running downhill and on rough terrane. These shoes are not the lightest, and didn't feel comfortable when I first put them on, but after a day on the trail they're the MOST COMFORTABLE shoes I have ever owned,. My feet feel great! This is my 4th pair of XA PRO 3D and as long as Solomon makes these shoes I will buy them. Also these shoes are durable. I replace them when the tread on the soles wear out. Imagine that the shoes last so long that the first thing that wears out are the soles! The last pair athletic shoes I had were that durable were leather Adidas tennis shoes I wore in the early 1980s!

Bring back, bring back, bring back my X-Mission 3s to me.Yet Salomon shoe returned to REI. Nothing has worked since the X-Mission 3 - which I have been told was the greatest Salomon trail running shoe of all time. These are so different. Narrow toe box, narrow across the top with no means to adjust, stiff. After just 1 hour wearing them around the house both my baby toes were red. That's the problem with so many shoes these days, they are making them longer and narrower. People's feet didn't just change overnight so why did your shoes? What were you possibly thinking when you discontinued such a wonderful shoe as the X-Mission 3?Bring back, bring back, bring back my X-Mission 3s to me.And don't tell me you changed them because of people's comments. I have purchased nearly 10 pairs of XA Pro 3D shoes over the years and have recently bought 5 more pairs to support an AT through hike beginning in late March ‘23. They fit my feet well and I have accumulated over 2000 miles on them. However, there is a major design and/or manufacturing flaw in them. Every single pair encountered the following pre-mature failure in both shoes well before the soles wore out. The cloth, lace loop closest to the pinky toe gets sawed through over time by the auto lace itself! (See photo of routine failure). All of the other lace loops have a protective plastic insert in them to prevent this and never have I encountered a lace loop failure in any loops containing the insert. All of the other lace loops have a protective plastic insert in them to prevent this and never have I encountered a lace loop failure in any loops containing the insert. Without this loop in the lacing system, your foot slides more in the toe box causing increased likelihood of blisters…. an aggravation I am not looking forward to on my upcoming through hike. If any of the pairs of new shoes develop this failure on my hike, can I return them for warranty and get a new pair sent to me? I like the shoes but hate having to deal with this failure mode. I can’t fix the loop and I can’t risk changing shoes at this point before my hike. Why can’t they be made with a plastic insert in this lace loop? I certainly hope this wasn’t planned to be manufactured obsolescence. Frustrated customer!
I am disappointed with the new version of this shoe. I wore out a previous version of the XA PRO 3D which I purchased at LL Bean in 2009. I loved those shoes so much that I still used the worn out shoes on many hikes. It is obvious the new version is made with cheaper quality materials. Many reviewers agree. My biggest complaint is the large floppy tongue that feels like it is made from camping pad foam. The tongue of my previous pair seemed more like a soft squishy silicone rubber material. It stayed centered on my foot better and didn't work its way off to one side so quickly. The other aspect of the v8 that I don't like is the thickness of the soles. It seems like I can feel every tiny stone that I step on. I don't get it. I'm going to look into a pair of Hoka ... MoreI am disappointed with the new version of this shoe. This is my 4th pair of the xa pro 3d's. The first 3 pairs were used in various hazardous terrain in an operational capacity and never let me down. Was the most comfortable, reliable shoe I had ever found. I recently purchased the new "v8" version of the shoe, and was shocked at the loss of quality. Everything about it from glue where there used to be stitching, to the joke of a sole that feels extremely flimsy. No heel lock or anything. Was slipping just walking around the house. My first thought was this looks like a payless imitation of a salomon shoe. Huge disappointment. Obviously cutting corners to maximize profits. On to the Merrell moab I go. Bring back the old version!
I have been a log time Salomon user, and have had multiple pairs of the previous model XA Pro 3D, and have never been disappointed with both the initial fit during the break-in period, or the overall fit during the broken-in period. When I saw this latest model had been released, I was excited to get my hands on a pair! Historically I have been able to order my normal size of shoe and not worry about size variations between Salomon models or updated models of shoes. Not the case with these. I had to return the 8.5's that I typically get and order 8's instead. The 8's (in length) fit the same way an 8.5 fits in the older model. Bit of a frustrating thing to find out when ordering these online and not having the benefit of being able to try them on in store. The ... Bit of a frustrating thing to find out when ordering these online and not having the benefit of being able to try them on in store. The next thing that was extremely obvious, was that the shoes had a shallow heel on them, and did not grip the heel of my foot at all. This of course was a massive red flag, and a recipe for blisters.I thought, maybe this was an anomaly, so I searched out a store to try another pair of size 8's out. I ended up having the same issue.I have been trail running/racing for well over a decade and know how a shoe should fit, so if there's a question of whether or not I know how to properly size and fit a shoe to my foot, rest easy when I say that this is not a case of an inexperienced show buyer.Overall, I'm super disappointed that it was such a poor fit, and that I now have to find an alternative.
I buy men’s athletic shoes because I need more toe room to flex for liftoff. This is my first pair from this brand. While the heel fits great, the toe box is way too narrow, there’s a rigid “plastic” feel to the upper reinforcements that’s too inflexible for the surrounding fabric, in 2 weeks time the soles already show lack the lack of longevity, and the cushion and support of the insole are far less than I expect from a shoe in this price bracket.I do love the lacing system. So far it’s the best I’ve found to customize for and prevent stops to keep it snug.I’m impressed with the education about proper fit on this site and really wanted to love these. I just don’t and will be donating them once the new pair of my old stand by’s from another manufacturer arrives.
Every since I bought my first pair of Salomon Missions, I have been the brand's biggest cheerleader! I told everyone I knew that Salomon was the absolute best trail shoe, and I pointed many friends, as well as students, to the brand. I ran through many versions of the Mission, followed by years of the Speedcross and eventually the Supercross. I have been searching for a new Salomon shoe that looks, feels, and performs as amazing as all of my (too many to count) previous ones, and I can not find one. I am sooo bummed!! I have spent hours online searching for previous models of my favorite shoes, hoping to find some still out there, but I have come up empty. Strangely enough, I kinda feel like I've lost an old friend, ha! I am currently wearing old worn-out ...
