Finally got my hands on the Samsung 990 Pro PCIe 4.0 NVMe and I am super impressed! I have always been a huge fan of Samsung SSDs and use them almost exclusively in all my computers/laptops. So the first order of business was popping it in my external enclosure and getting an idea of the speed and testing it out, I loved what I saw so much I immediately cloned my main SSD in my new PCIe 4.0 capable laptop and swapped those drives out! As with any M.2 drive the install was super easy and is usually just popping it into the slot and screwing it down. As for setup, I used a cloner to clone the OS and main drive to the 990 Pro. The laptop was already fast before the Samsung 990 Pro but it's smoking fast now, probably the fastest laptop I have had to date! The Samsung ... MoreFinally got my hands on the Samsung 990 Pro PCIe 4.0 NVMe and I am super impressed! Well boot time is superb at ~10 seconds from power on to fingerprint and maybe 2 seconds from fingerprint to usable desktop!CrystalDiskMark testing comes in as follows:Sequential read/write speeds - 6963/4175 MB/sRandom read/write speeds - 3260/2304 MB/s796K/562K IOPSThis is definitely a fast SSD offering from Samsung and I highly suggest getting out there and grabbing one for laptop/desktop/or even external use. For me I am using this as my primary drive in the laptop going forward as that's where the video editing happens!

Now THIS is a drive. I've been a huge Samsung fan since day 1 and have their early 860 drive in my office PC. Well I really needed more space and this was a perfect upgrade. Packing and installation is simple like any other ssd, and the Samsung software you can use for cloning a drive is great. I could tell my bottleneck was my old SSD and once I booted up windows I could tell a difference honestly. I usually have multiple browsers open for monitoring and can use over 50gigs of ram between all my applications and this new gen 4 drive really made things feel snappy. Temperatures seemed fine as well as I moved data off this drive onto another drive. Copying files over 10gb ethernet from our backup NAS cluster was very quick and I'm excited to take advantage of this in ... MoreNow THIS is a drive. It's really hard to go wrong with Samsung when it comes to SSD's or any form of digital storage. I have been using them since I got my first Samsung 2.5" SATA SSD 9 years ago (which is still going strong!).Per usual, Samsung is at the top of performance specs and the 990 Pro is no different with sequential read/write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s, which I was able to achieve using Crystal Disk benchmark software. Before doing anything though, you should install the Samsung Magician software for hard drive management and update the firmware to be current that fixes some issues that were reported on. Once updated, you can also use the software to manage other drive features like encryption, performance optimization, or run health checks.I have this in my PC now as I ... MoreIt's really hard to go wrong with Samsung when it comes to SSD's or any form of digital storage. Once again, I am a very happy Samsung hard drive customer and couldn’t imagine going with another brand. They have great performance, longevity, and a proven track record. They have earned and continue to have my trust in keeping my data safe and devices running at lightning speed.
Samsung has hit yet another home run with the 990 PRO. This Gen4 NVMe SSD delivers top performance and reliability for gaming, content creation, or any other demanding use. Game loading times are blissfully short, Windows boots up in a flash, 4K video editing is a breeze, and browsing through my massive photo collection feels instantaneous.Samsung’s Magician software is easily the most comprehensive among SSD manufacturers, and the company has a long track record of updating their drive firmware whenever the need arises. This level of support gives me peace of mind and is something you just don’t get with cheaper brands.Overall, the 990 PRO is a premium SSD in every way, and I’d recommend it without reservation.
I have to admit I was a little skeptical with the hypes and must haves of getting an external memory for my PS5. The product itself would likely be 4or5/5 but Samsung massively dropped the ball with the firmware and response. The drives in the PRO lineup (980 and 990 specifically) are now well known for being affected by faulty firmware that rapidly degrades the drives lifespan in use. This was fixed with a firmware update in February, however, not only was the communication on the matter AFTER being called out by multiple sources but there is also the aftermath to consider. Samsung hasn't issued official recalls. This means that most of the 990Ps in retail stores are loaded with the old firmware. While tech enthusiasts right now maybe aware of this and know that the first thing they should do after loading up the drive is a firmware update what about next year, couple years down the line if they buy this from sale?Right now Samsung seems to be liberally issuing reclamations, likely under public pressure. However, when your drive that could have lasted 8-10 years fails at around 5 because will they care? of course not.In vacuum it is still extremely performant drive from reputable manufacturer. A little on the more premium side on price/perf but not too bad. But I can't really ignore how big of a debacle the firmware is. And I loathe to think about how many non-technical people who bought a pre-built are going to get burned for this because they won't know their drive is burning itself nonstop :/

I already have a Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SSD from past over three years and it's working awesome. Hence, I bought the 990 Pro NVMe SSD 1TB model a few weeks back when it went on sale on Samsung's website. I got it as an upgrade in storage for my desktop that came with a 250gb ssd. I mainly use this desktop for editing photos, videos and net browsing, also at times I do play games on it too.The Samsung's Data migration tool was an easy download and install from Samsung's website and I used this to clone the existing 250gb ssd to the new 1TB drive (you will need an external SSD enclosure). Prior to cloning would definitly suggest to move any huge files from the old drive to an external drive to make this cloning process faster.Post cloning, I swapped the old SSD with ... MoreI already have a Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SSD from past over three years and it's working awesome. I also downloaded the Samsung's Magician's software to create the "over provisioning" space and for general monitoring of the SSD's health. Btw, as per the Magician software, it seems this SSD already had the latest firmware installed, so hopefully they took care of the SSDs dying issue.Overall am happy with my purchase, thanks Samsung for a great product.
I had to make the tough decision on which of my devices would get to have the latest Samsung SSD first. I have had all the previous ones and they're still rocking like the champs they are.I decided to add it to my gaming rig so I upgrade its other components to match up to the 990 Pro's prowess. If you want to take full advantage of its 'magic', make sure that you install a heatsink. Otherwise the label heat spreader it comes with should be well enough for non-heavy gaming/video editing.I have a few PC's with a 980, 970, and an 860 and I have to point out that even though the 990 is extremely faster than its predecessors, it is more power efficient.
