I needed more storage for my MacBook Pro (but could have been any Windows machine) laptop. This Samsung 2TB external Solid State Drive (SSD) is noticeably faster than an older technology Hard Disk Drive (HDD) when I was copying folders with a large amount of data. Another - maybe the biggest benefit - is reliability. I recently had a HDD fail, as they are ALL prone to, and this SSD should remedy that. And, the smaller size and weight are a plus both for mobility and secure storage in my home safe. This "T5" model was released before the newer, somewhat faster read/write "T7", and is a true value. B&H communicated very effectively my order placement, shipping date and tracking number. B&H staff and their systems ROCK!

I had really high hope for this ssd because it seemed to check every box. And it turns out that the best file transfer rate it can deliver is no more than 100MB/s, which is about 10% of its claimed rate. For most part it was hovering around 50MB per second, slower than a regular SD card.Tried everything. Used the USB cables come with it. Tried on multiple computers both Windows (10 & 11) and Macbooks that are equipped with both USB 3.1 and USB 3.2 cards, including using my own very beefy and expensive USB-C 3.2 cables to no avail. The same terrible file transfer rate persisted.Spent more than 3 hours with Samsung tech support. They remotely tested it on my brand new my Samsung Tab S7 with every trick up on their sleeves. In every aspect this drive works as expected and is a solid choice for an external/mobile ssd. There is one issue that seems to have a fix that worked for me at least. On both the T7 (and the T5) the drive would randomly disconnect with an error. After a couple days of internet searches a recommendation was to download & the "Samsung Portable SSD Software" directly from Samsungs website instead of using the software provided on the hard drive. (It's the same app and I don't understand why this would make a difference other than the one factory pre-loaded may be out of date). After using the software to perform an update, both my T7 and T5 drives stopped disconnecting with an error... at least they haven't for about a month now. The Samsung SSD T5 Portable is a compact and powerful storage solution. Its sleek design and small size make it incredibly portable, fitting easily in your pocket. With lightning-fast transfer speeds and a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface, it's perfect for professionals and enthusiasts who require high-speed storage. The T5 Portable also offers robust security features, including AES 256-bit hardware encryption and optional password protection, ensuring the safety of your sensitive data. Its durable metal casing protects against drops and impacts, while its compatibility with various operating systems makes it easy to set up and use. If you're in need of reliable, fast, and secure storage on the go, the Samsung SSD T5 Portable is a top choice.
I have been using this for about 6 weeks. I have found it to perform super well and according to specs, giving me the very high transfer rates advertised. One downside of this device for me seems to be that it does not play well with other USB attached storage on my machine, I have to detach other USB sticks and drives for it to want to work properly. When I have another USB stick connected it will sometimes connect at lower speed or disconnect randomly. Connecting another USB storage device when this one is connected causes it to disconnect! Weird behavior, but I am dealing with it since the performance is great.I also had issues with the USBC cable that came with the drive, but B&H were kind enough to send me a replacement and have had no issues with that one.
Now having owned and shot dozens of times on my Black Magic 6K, I can safely say these SSD drives are an absolute must and probably your best bang for buck option of a memory card option. The camera has three different options, Cfast, SD Card and SSD drives. Now while SD cards or CFast are probably more convenient they tend to significantly more expensive and aren't even as fast. To have 1TB capacity for a fraction of the price of a CFast, I say its worth sacrificing convenience. Now with this though you will have to buy some kind of cage or mounting support for it, there are many options. Personally I went with the Tilta as I felt it fit my needs the best, but I believe Small Rig, and a few other companies have different versions so do some research and find the right one for you. Now if you are trying to be a bit more low key about your build then I suppose thats where the convenience factor comes into play with SD or CFast cards, so think about your situation and how you are using the camera.I know there are a few other options for SSD cards out there for Black Magic cameras but since using these I have had no issues with writing or transferring, so it's been hard to want to make the switch when something has worked so well and for its price range. Just know you are getting a great card when pulling the trigger with this, but again you might need a few other pieces that you should invest in anyway. Happy Filming!
The 2-star rating applies to using this SSD with a MacBook Air (M2) and with Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and S8+ tablet. With windows laptop, the SSD works flawlessly. With a Mac and my other Samsung devices, it's a nightmare. I ignore this, but it freaks me out every time. The second thing is that the Phone/Table send a persistent notification to restart the Phone/Tablet, which I eventually do just to get rid of the notification. I'm pretty sure the issue relates to having 'security' enabled and the structure of the drive having an un-protected volume and protected volume and the un-protected volume being 'ejected' when you log into the protected volume. I'm also sure this could be fixed (definitely by disabling security - but what is the point of an unprotected SSD??) or formatting the drive to only have one volume - but that's way beyond my technical capability. I just expect the SSD to work. Incidentally, I don't have any of these problems with Sandisk SSDs.Its funny that's the manufacturers Samsung devices seems to have the most issue with, is other Samsung devices...! Would I buy a Samsung SSD again? no way (unless it was to be used exclusively with a windows laptop)
I use this to run my audio software from multiple computers. The transfer speeds are good enough for me needs. Recently just recorded a chamber choir directly to this SSD from my surface go laptop. Every thing worked perfect even with my real-time file transfer being rather large. I love the fact that I can use this to switch between my portable laptops and can then plug into my larger computer when i get into the studio for post production. This saves $ because now I don't need travel laptops that need large internal SSDs. This also saves time with file transferring. I love the convenience of this item. It's very small though! Will be terrible to lose it without properly backing it up.
I bought this T7 drive for my new Mac Studio, doing some occasional video editing and photo editing. When the drive arrived it was fast, 600-700 MB/s read and write. Now less than a year later the write speed has dropped off a cliff ago 60-70 MB/s. The drive is only half full and is plugged into the Studio's Tb4 port. With write speeds like that I might as well be using and old spinning HDD. Not sure what happened, but very disappointed. Will be looking for a new SSD from another brand.
I use this T7 (500GB, 1 TB) for image file and catalog storage in Lightroom Classic with the USB-C or USB-3 cables, depending on my computer. The solid metal enclosure, quality cable and super-reliable electronics make this an excellent choice when shooting with a laptop or moving the drive between different PCs. I frequently clone/sync to a backup drive. While I am a big fan of cloud storage, my LR-Classic database is so large that a local storage-plus-backup is my preferred way of working. And it is speedier. Especially with the USB-C connection on a modern laptop, the speed is almost indistinguishable from an internal SSD drive.
