This drive is not only loud during data transfer, but it makes a little clicking noise every few seconds even when idle. Online chatter suggests it's normal but if that's the sort of thing that might bother you, run away. Also the aggressive flashing of the G light when in use is another unnecessarily intrusive aspect of an otherwise functional drive. Hoped to use this as a Time Machine drive but it's way too annoying to leave on.

I had 2 frustrating days trying to figure out why my new G-drive would not stay mounted on my new Apple Studio (also recently purchased from B&H). After trying everything, I finally tried a different cable than the Thunderbolt 3 cable supplied with the G-Drive. I was disappointed that such a good product was tarnished by a simple faulty cable. I called B&H and they quickly decided to ship me a replacement cable. I was delighted by this professional response without me needing to bag up and ship my bad cable back to them. I have shopped with B&H since about 1980 and have virtually never had an issue. Ben in customer support professionally handled this and will keep me coming back to B&H for all of my photo / computer needs well into the future. I bought 2 of these to replace my old Just a Bunch of Disks storage array for video editing. The 4 firewire hard disks were good enough for what I was doing and for what was available at the time. Now I have these 2 (and a 1TB Samsung SSD) daisy chained to my new M1 MacBook Air - that I got while visiting NY and walking into B&H.The drives are fast enough to support my editing. They're quiet, and look great on my worktable. They are perfect for what I need.

I am a practically retired shooter/editor, both video and photography. For many years I used G-Technology drives which stood the test of time, so it was with some trepidation that I bought this drive after Western Digital had consumed both G-Technology and SanDisk. My needs have diminished enormously, with my personal media backups being handled by a 6 terabyte master and the backup spread over two older 4tb drives, all G-Tech. I week ago one of those old 4tb drive started clucking like an old hen and refused to mount. Time for a new 6tb drive. This drive seemed to be the only obvious choice and so far I am very pleased with it. Quick, quiet and well build, I have no complaints, I do miss a second port for daisy chaining but I am sure there is a reason for its ... MoreI am a practically retired shooter/editor, both video and photography. Quick, quiet and well build, I have no complaints, I do miss a second port for daisy chaining but I am sure there is a reason for its exclusion. The drive is not going to get a lot of spin time so I hope it last as long as I do :)
In my experience with this drive, it's horribly loud. All these intermittent grinding and popping noises that other reviews mention. It's hard to live with. At the same time people write about how quiet it is. Does that mean the loud ones are faulty? It's just useful enough not to return.
Right out of the box it was simple as plug it in and go. This drive starts when you computer does with no set up procedure or special software. The outside construction is sturdy, clean and easily stackable with my over drives. Its is super fast when save over files and so far shows no problems. Very pleased with my purchase.
I purchased this drive to provide redundant local backup for my photography catalog. Installation was exceedingly simple - true plug and play. The drive is fast and silent. I appreciate the peace of mind knowing that my files are well protected and readily available if my primary RAID drive were to fail.
I'm writing this review because I recently purchased this drive and upon first use it was already making terrible grinding/clicking noises that sound like the indication of a drive disk going bad. All I had done at that point was format the drive and name it. So as an editor who has experienced this many times with G-drive in particular, I returned the product in exchange for a new one. However, after 2 weeks, my exchanged drive arrived and I noticed that upon first use, it had the same clicking noises as the previous one. I also noticed that my computer immediately was able to identify the name of the drive and that I didn't need to format the drive (Drive typically comes formatted for mac and I use windows). I also noticed that my computer immediately was able to identify the name of the drive and that I didn't need to format the drive (Drive typically comes formatted for mac and I use windows). I realized that B&H instead of exchanging the broken drive, repackaged and sent me the same drive I sent them. All in all, either every one of these drives has a terrible clicking disk, or B&H really trying to pull a fast one on me. Both are probably true, but either way this drive is bottom tier.
Does what I intended it to do. Only bug is that I have to manually turn on hard drive each time I start up my computer. Other external hard drives start up automatically. Perhaps I have some setting wrong.
I bought this because my university has stopped allowing alumni to use its free google drive unlimited storage and needed to download 20tb of data. I already have theSanDisk Professional 7.68TB G-DRIVE PRO STUDIO SSD for editing 4k videos. That thing is fast and quiet! This drive, while I knew would be slower, is much slower and very loud. Sometimes I feel like I am back in an MRI. I am obviously making a joke, but it does sound like one. I seen others make a comment about this and maybe it is only because I only use ssd drives, and not used to the sound, or maybe this is an issue! I have only had this one day.
