The RF-1400 is an amazing helmet and I'm reflecting that in my rating. However for the written portion I just want to touch on something that most other reviews didn't. This relates to Bluetooth communication systems which are growing ever more popular these days. I strongly do not recommend a Bluetooth unit of any kind in here. This is a race helmet that was built for performance and it does that job perfectly. However, despite the built-in speaker pockets, wearing a Bluetooth headset in this helmet is quite cumbersome due to the tight fit and you can pretty much forget about trying to incorporate ear plugs along with a headset. Furthermore, the hard cushion on either side of the lower padding renders a bluetooth mounting clamp useless which means you'll be stuck ... MoreThe RF-1400 is an amazing helmet and I'm reflecting that in my rating. The base model has speakers that are 39mm and the RF-1400 speaker pockets were just a hair too small to accommodate them comfortably which means they sit at a bit of an angle - further decreasing comfort. Again, I'm not taking any points off the overall review because Shoei's job is to protect my melon - not support Bluetooth units. Just wanted to inform others who are in the same position while shopping.

I've been wearing Shoei helmets for over 25 years and this will be the last one. In fact, I'm selling this one off and trying again. Why? The visor design is unacceptable. Short of having the visor open at least half-way, any sort of wind will snap the visor closed. The end effect is you can't place it on the first detent mark for ventilation like any normal helmet. Additionally, there is now a thick lip on the bottom of the visor that when opened half way, creates a heavy blurred line across your horizon sight line. The center tab on the visor is counter-intuitive for anyone who has worn a Shoei as the tab was always on the left side of the visor. As others have mentioned, the new head shapes are either far too snug (medium) or too loose (large).Ventilation is ... MoreI've been wearing Shoei helmets for over 25 years and this will be the last one. Fit and finish are good.Otherwise, a good helmet that is marred by a major design flaw in the visor. (Looking at the visor mechanism, if they replaced the nearly flat detent points with sharper point, this may easily fix this flaw.)

I chose this helmet after using a GT Air (size small with the thinnest headliner padding) for several years. I wanted something with a better protection rating so I chose to forgo another helmet with a drop down sunvisor and get something Snell rated. I tried many helmets but went with Shoei because I find their internal padding to be the most comfortable and plush and they do an excellent job of sealing their helmets around the bottom. I have eye issues and wear contacts so I can't handle even having the slightest bit of air flow hitting my eyes or else they'll dry out and become irritated. I've tried Nolan, Bell, Arai, LS2, and Nexxt and they all have a draft that comes up through the chin area. Shoei also seals up perfectly around my neck/chin.The fit and size ... MoreI chose this helmet after using a GT Air (size small with the thinnest headliner padding) for several years. I've tried Nolan, Bell, Arai, LS2, and Nexxt and they all have a draft that comes up through the chin area. Shoei also seals up perfectly around my neck/chin.The fit and size guide are pretty spot on. My head circumference is about 57.5cm and medium fits really well. The fit is more intermediate oval although my head is more of a longer oval shape. It fits firmly front to back, with slight forehead pressure that I expect will improve as it breaks in, and has just a little room side to side.Compared to my GT Air, this helmet is slightly shorter front to back, a little lighter, has a larger view port, and seems to flow more air with all vents open. The only negative is it's a tad louder even with the vents closed. I'm not sure why but my guess is because the exhaust vent is always open rather than having the ability to close it.As far as comm systems, I'm using a Sena SMH10R. It's no more or less of a pain to install in this helmet than any other I've tried it in. My only complaint in this area is that the speaker cut outs are just a few MM smaller in diameter than my GT Air. While the speakers fit perfectly in my GT Air, I had to press them into the EPS foam a little bit in order to get them to fit. They have a little cutout for the speaker wire which they faced to the rear of the helmet rather than the front which I also do not like since the wires need to be routed forward in order to connect to the rest of the system. That's fine for one of the speakers but the other has a shorter wire coming out of it and I had almost no slack left after getting it all connected.Airflow is excellent with all vents open. The side vents on the forehead are a bit tough to open with gloves in but I suspect they'll loosen up with use. The front chin vent also whistles when open halfway but I only ever run vents either all of the way open or closed so that doesn't bother me.The new visor attachment mechanism makes it easier to remove and install the visors than the one they used on my GT Air so that's a plus. I like the center visor lock and it doesn't take long to get used to it. After a few years with my GT Air, it become a bit tricky to lock the visor down using the old side lock method so I don't suspect that will be a problem with this helmet. Riding with the visor cracked open is also an improvement. On my GT Air, the first "crack" opened too wide allowing air to blow into my eyes. The first "crack" on this helmet is smaller so I don't get air in my face but it still opens up enough to circulate inside the helmet. All in all, this is easily the best full face within a +/- $100 price range. I knocked a star off the review for the smaller speaker cutouts and wind noise.

I upgraded from the RF1200 so the change was incremental. Like the better clarity and wider view of the new face shield. Here in Phoenix, I haven't found a need for the Pinlock so I didn't install on the 1200 or the 1400. As many reviewers have noted the cheek pads are more snug but it has not been more difficult to put on or take-off than the 1200. The first few times I used the helmet it seemed to be too snug but it is breaking in and is not uncomfortable. I like the paint job and color. The quality of the helmet is what you expect from the top of the line Shoe. I do not noticed the slight weight increase while riding. It does seem that the wind and outside noise is more muffled. There is little of no wind buffeting at higher speeds (75-80 mph). What I don't like ... MoreI upgraded from the RF1200 so the change was incremental. There is little of no wind buffeting at higher speeds (75-80 mph). What I don't like is, in my use, I note a wind sound starting around 45 mph not heard with the 1200. It appears to come from the top open air vents. It is not a whistling sound but a soft swooshing sound. It may be a result of my height or upright riding position and may not be experienced by everyone. It was annoying at first but I seem to be getting used to it.
I considered getting this helmet for a while but was turned off by the proprietary comm unit that Shoei decided to go with (Sena). I am a fan of the Cardo Packtalk Bold units. I use them on all of my helmets. So I was hesitant on purchasing the Neotec 2 because I did not want my comm unit too far back. So after much consideration I bought the helmet with the hopes of making a clamp work so I could add my Cardo. Well to my surprise I made it work with very little effort. I was able to clamp my unit flawlessly by taking my time and working the clamp in. It worked and I am super happy. If you are on the fence in regards to this issue, rest assured it can be done. I swapped my face shield to a dark smoked shield and installed the pin lock. I swapped my face shield to a dark smoked shield and installed the pin lock. I wore my helmet in the house for over 30 minutes and it fit perfectly. It's snug but very plush and comfortable. The liner and pad materials are premium. Can't wait to ride with the new helmet. I don't mind paying a premium for a helmet because my head to me is invaluable and I want the best. Overall the helmet is a premium helmet and worth every penny.
As a new rider, I really only recognized big brand names. I knew I wanted to invest in something that would really protect me and when I tried this helmet on, I felt very comfortable and secured. The padding is quality soft, the shell feels solid and I already easily installed a Cardo Spirit HD with ease. The helmet had the molds for the headphones to fit in already which made it even easier. Nothing is perfect so that's why I did 4 star. The forehead padding is a little loose so it can push my forehead skin down which is uncomfortable at first but all you have to do is grab the helmet and move it around until it's set straight. No regrets spending so much on what seems and feels like a quality product. No Regrats. I wear a 7 3/8 hat and got the XL.
I tried both the Arai Corsair-X and Shoei RF-1400, and the Shoei is hands-down the better helmet for me. They both fit fairly comfortably, the Arai is a little rounder while the Shoei is a more traditional Intermediate Oval. The Shoei fits snugly, by design, and that took a ride to get used to. Not uncomfortably so, just more snug in the cheeks than I'm used to. The Arai fits fine, not as snug. For me, I like my cheeks to feel a bit pinched -- a helmet should not move around at all.The payoff to the snug fit, other than safety, is noise (or lack thereof). The Shoei is amazingly quiet compared to the Arai, which is amazingly loud. In fact, the Shoei is quieter without ear plugs than the Arai is with them. I've heard people say that a "quiet" helmet is a fantasy. I'm here to tell you that's absolutely not true; the Shoei is very comfortably quiet without ear plugs at anything other than freeway speeds.Lastly, the visor mechanism on the Shoei is much better. It's centrally mounted so it's easy to open your visor with either hand. The Arai's is on the left side, so at a stoplight with the clutch in I found myself having to reach over with my right hand to find the actuator to flip open the shield. Add in that the Arai's latch is more fiddly and doesn't always want to let go, and I found this annoying. In all, the Shoei is the best-fitting, quietest, and safest helmet I've owned. There's nothing I dislike about it, and at about $600 it's an excellent value.
TLDR: Great helmet that likes to blow debris in my eyes on the highway.I had an Arai Defiant for a few years, and also rode with a RF-1200 on occasion. The RF-1200 was lighter, quieter, and cheaper than my Arai. My only complaint was that it always folded my ears over and was hard to get them flattened back out. The RF-1400 promised to change all of that, so when it came time for a new helmet, I decided to try one. Terrible mistake. The major flaw with this helmet is that it doesn't have a chin curtain. I never installed them on my Arai and RF-1200, and I never really considered one important, until riding with this helmet. Any jacket I wear with a thicker collar shoves air up the chin of this helmet and directly into my eyes. Any jacket I wear with a thicker collar shoves air up the chin of this helmet and directly into my eyes. No issues with my leather sport jackets in the summer, or when wearing sunglasses, but in the fall and winter it gets dangerous. Trying to commute when the sun is coming up or going down means I can't wear sunglasses, and need a heavier jacket to keep warm. This has led to me being blinded at highway speeds, in traffic, on multiple occasions. Absolutely unacceptable, for any helmet at any price point.Otherwise, I'd give this helmet 4 stars and be happy with my purchase. It still folds my ears over (super annoying) and installing my Sena was difficult but possible. Outside of that it is comfortable, quiet, light, and vents really well. If I could get the transition visor for it, I'd probably love this helmet. Unfortunately, I am stuck commuting in the winter with a neck gator crammed into my chin and holding a hand up where Shoei should have put a chin curtain.
I have used a Sedici Strada II for the past 3 years and decided it was time for an upgrade. The RF-1400 felt like much better quality as expected. The button to unlock the visor is something new to me, but very easy to operate. Ventilation is great, but can almost be too much even with the vents closed if you ride in the winter. Unfortunately, the visor included with the helmet seems like it does not seal properly. I ride a naked bike, and any speed over 70mph makes my ears feel like they are going to pop. I contacted RevZilla about an exchange, but was turned away since "the visor has been used." Even with the ability to shift the hinge back to create a tighter seal, the helmet is uncomfortably loud with the included visor. I am very disappointed that a helmet ... MoreI have used a Sedici Strada II for the past 3 years and decided it was time for an upgrade. The RF-1400 felt like much better quality as expected. I am very disappointed that a helmet costing almost $700 is more uncomfortable than a $200 helmet.
Before I begin, let me be clear that this has nothing to do with Revzilla ? their customer service is excellent, and this is all on me.But.I absolutely hate this helmet.I bought the RF1400 to replace my aging RF1100 helmet. The construction and materials on this RF1400 are really good. The air flow is simultaneously better and also quieter than the RF1100 too. Honestly, the engineering in this helmet is spectacular, but the sizing is absolutely not the same. My RF1100 is a 2xl oblong oval and though it was a little too snug at first, it fit well after a week or so of riding. Conversely, the neck, forehead and cheek pads fit much tighter on this RF1400, and although I?ve got almost 1000 miles on this helmet, there has been no give at all. Conversely, the neck, forehead and cheek pads fit much tighter on this RF1400, and although I?ve got almost 1000 miles on this helmet, there has been no give at all. The shell feels much more narrow than the RF1100 is, and the fitment suffers for it in my opinion. Once I have it on, the helmet is tolerable for about an hour. But putting this helmet on and taking it off is just miserable. So, if you have a giant 2xl head like me, be absolutely certain you are happy with the fitment immediately or return it before you ride with it.One last note, as the helmet fits too snugly to allow me to wear sunglasses, I wanted a tinted visor for daylight rides, Although there are several options on the market, no one seems to have any OEM or name brand options in stock. I've only been able to find very cheap knock off / import versions online, and none of them are compatible with the pinlocks.
