At 59cm I was exactly between sizes Medium & Large - Reviews on here & on the greater internet who had the same predicament lead me to believe I needed to size up to a Large because Medium was way too small for them. Considering that, & the fact that my forehead is on the tall side I figured a Large was the sure bet!Well I personally found that Large was too big, Medium fits just right especially after swapping in the thinner check pads that come with the helmet. Another bonus with going size Medium is the helmet shell is slimmer profile than the Large which doesn't look so bulky on your head. The helmet has tons of vents, is lightweight - yet a sturdy enough build and has a D-ring closure which was a priority for me. I wear medium in other Smith helmets, so went with medium with the Mainline as well. Feel a few pressure points when I first put it on each time, but then it seems to settle in and doesn't give me issues with 3-4 hour rides/races.Goggles (Squad XL) can be lifted and placed under the visor and feel stable there. However, I pulled goggles off and hung them on handlebar for longer transfer section climbs because the goggles block ventilation. But, for me, it does require removing your gloves to fasten/unfasten.I prefer to use water bottles instead of hydration pack with tube. The chin bar opening at the front does allow for drinking from bottle with helmet on, with some degree of finesse. I use specialized Watergate bottle lids, which have the heart valve squeeze system. This is key because I can tip my head back and squeeze the bottle through the chin bar hole into my mouth. I can only do this successfully when stopped, but it is possible without removing helmet. Hydration can make or break a big day on trail, so this is actually an important factor for me.

This was ordered online for a 12-year old highly-skilled Enduro MTB enthusiast. Measurements suggested on the cusp of Medium but had to exchange for Small. Quality is amazing, like all our Smith helmets (ski, bike). 2 sets (different sizes) of helmet pads and face brace pads. We ended up using the smaller helmet pads and larger face pads and obtained a perfect fit. Son also loves the “cool” factor, that goes a long way to having him wear it. Only caveat is the chinstrap buckle. I understand the need for “bulletproof” retention but the downside is a buckle that is more difficult to attach/remove. Luckily there is a central hole in the face brace so hydration is possible while keeping the helmet on.

I ordered the Mainline MIPS after weeks of researching the right helmet, and decided on SMITH, due to its reputation and quality craftsmanship. And that’s apparently clear after receiving the product. However, it arrived with a torn box and small, but noticeable rub on the face guard. And it truly appears as if the item was resold after receiving it back as a return, which is disappointing, given that it’s my first SMITH experience, now dampened by this incident. It’s more a trust thing, than anything else: why sell an open box product as “new?” As well, why, knowing that I’m a first time buyer, would a company not want that experience to be the absolute best?Great MTB Helmet though! Extremely WELL MADE!!! Quality! Ruggedness, light on the head! I bought this helmet about a month ago, in the orange color. I was a tad nervous because some people had mentioned noise from the MIPS system, but I found that not to be a problem at all. This helmet is ridiculously comfortable, I felt safe and secure, and it has fantastic visibility - it didn’t encroach on my field of view at all. It’s really well ventilated as well, I live in the American southwest and I could feel the breeze nicely, perfect for downhill days. You can hear the mips but it’s not loud or distracting at all. It just sounds like a bike helmet. I like that the chin strap is a d-ring too like motorcycle helmets so it won’t come undone like a buckle might in a crash. It feels just as secure and safe like a motocross helmet, but lightweight and ... MoreI bought this helmet about a month ago, in the orange color. I might get some backlash here, but I may be the only one that hates this helmet.Pros:-Lightweight-Breathable-assorted cheek pad sizesCons:-No rear tension for a snugger fit-Chin strap is impossible with gloves on *prefer a quicker release like the Bell Quick Air chin strap-sizing is off, the med didnt feel secure on my dome and a small was too snug-i cant pull up my goggles for a quick breather, they flop right back into your faceI wore this helmet once on a longer ride and was so ticked the whole time. I fumbled with my gloves every time i wanted to take it on and off for a breather. And i know its not just me because my friend has this helmet and its annoying with the chin strap and gloves. Lame.
As a professional MTB instructor, I was excited to receive the Mainline helmet because of Smith’s reputation for quality, well thought out products. However, I was disappointed to find I’m in between sizes. I had to swap out the supplied extra pads for the smaller ones in order for the medium helmet to fit, but it was still too tight. I have to take my helmet off a lot to talk to my students, and I’m finding I’m avoiding doing so just to save my ears.I’m not a fan of the D ring closure system, as taking it off and on with gloves on is challenging. Last, I’m not a fan of a chin bar with a gaping hole in front of my mouth, with no grate or grill to keep rocks and debris from taking out my teeth from a rider that may be in front of me. There should be, at the very least, and optional protective insert for those that want more protection for their mouth. I’ve taken a rock to my goggles that left the lens severely scratched. If that same rock would have come through that hole in the front, I could have lost a couple of teeth.Other than that, it’s a great design, but I wish it was a more comfortable helmet with the hours I need to wear it everyday.
Was in the market for a new full face as my current needed retiring. Scored this half off and was stoked seeing as it's a "premium price" lid. Comfort and fit is pretty good although I had a pressure point on my forehead. Ventilation is better than none but not what marketing hypes it to be. Like the chin strap and I prefer a D ring; much more secure and not as difficult to manuever as folks like to complain about. You won't see a buckle on a motorcycle helmet. Protection wise, it's really thin. I don't trust the DH rating on this and would not want to wrap around a tree at 40mph. Any full face, however, is better than a half shell. Teeth are expensive, ya'll. Ultimately returned it as this possesses the worst implementation of Mips I've seen in any helmet. Thought folks were exaggerating about the noise. No. They are not. It's horrible. After a week I couldnt take it anymore.Overall a decent full face (minus the cheap Mips) but a joke at MSRP. Just buy a Leatt gravity at $99; a little more weight and heat but a lot more protection and rotational dispersion to boot. If you need more protection, Walmart has a cheapy MX (DOT rated) helmet for $50.
This is my first new full-face helmet in 10 years and I’m blown away by it. The Koroyd construction makes it so light it’s almost strange to wear at first because it doesn’t feel like the full certified DH rated helmet that it is. The helmet is quite fitted and comes with different sets of cheek pads to adjust against your face. The medium shell fits my bean (same as my Forefront 2 and Session) and the medium face pads feel barely snug and I never notice them when riding. The chin strap is a classic DH loop and snap with a one-hand release and snugs up with strap pads to eliminate any bounce movement. The biggest features are the things you don’t notice on the trails. The helmet is so light, your neck and shoulders don’t get tired at all. And I found myself turning my head more in corners and tech trails looking for lines. We rode a full weekend of DH at Bromont, Quebec in super sunny conditions and the Mainline stayed cool the whole time. The AirEvac ventilation + Koroyd works really well. So well that I didn’t even bother to remove the helmet on the lifts. The MIPS system squeaks a bit when riding, but I stopped noticing it after a run or two.The chin guard an face opening are much larger than what I was used to with previous Giro helmet and provide a high filed of vision and airflow for breathing felt 100% normal. You could absolutely use this helmet for enduro and trail riding and not worry about breathing and air intake. (With this level of breathing I can see why SMITH has not yet released a removable chin-strap helmet). The replaceable visor clicks in to multiple positions for extra visibility or sun blocking.I’m running Squad MTB Goggles with this helmet and the combo is killer good. The integration and fit are perfect and they maintain the right airflow to virtually eliminate fogging. The helmet is shaped to retain the goggle strap to keep even but minimal pressure on your face. The face opening width is huge and the matched goggles provide an unobstructed view and I can’t even see the chin bar when riding. The Chromapop lens was outstanding in the bright sun this past weekend and really made the trail features stand out even through the forest with heavy shadows and changing light. The helmet look great and the 3 colour Matte Slate - Fools Gold - Terra is the bomb. Love the 3 tone and sharp angles. Comes with a full-size helmet bag.
This protected me well in a recent crash and I'm getting another (smith offers 30% off for crash replacements). It's nearly perfect and feels much more solid than the Kali full face I had previously. The only real flaws are that the mips is pretty annoying - it really does creak constantly at the slightest movements (seems to be worse in the hot/humid). The d-ring straps aren't ideal either. The only other complaint is that your ears are pretty locked in, so hearing outside noises is reduced (this also contributes to the annoyance at the mips creak). My old Kali full face had vents near the ears so hearing was completely unobstructed.Overall though, the quality construction and protection easily makes up for the minor annoyances.
