So, thought I would give this a few months of use before giving my review:Pros:Fit is way better than the previous IXS full face I tried- my 59cm head fits nicely with the largeThis absolutely one of the highest quality helmets I have ever put on my head. I feel very, very safe with it on. My son who is 15 actually said his bell super DH felt like a toy after checking this one out. The helmet feels very light even though on paper is might be heavier than some. The ventilation is very good. And last but not least, the chin bar sits slightly low so you don?t have a ton of blowback when you are breathing hard and you can get your mouth to a water bottle pretty easily. I have worn this on several multi hour rides with thousands of feet of climbing without noticing much of a difference between this and my half shell.Cons:As other have said, it is squeaky, but has improved with use-they do not include any cloth barrier between the MIPS liner and the helmet like the Bell super DH, for example. I solved this issue by placing a very small piece of rolled up gorilla tape at the top of the helmet Between the MIPS layers, this decreases the ease of up and down movement ever so slightly without changing the rotation side to side within the MIPS system- i still feel like the MIPS is working without moving too easily up and down and making a bunch or racket.I am also disappointed that the visor does not adjust high enough to completely get my smith goggles out of my peripheral vision when I put them up there- this is completely beyond me how Smith missed this! I actually bought the matching smith goggles with the helmet partially for this reason. And finally- the buckle on this helmet is very nice but seems like overkill. All in all I am glad I bought the helmet and love it.

If you fit Smith helmets, the Mainline is no different from the comfort of any other helmets in the Smith lineup with the added protection of the chin bar. I wear a medium half shell and a medium in the Mainline as well. Smith has made some improvements in design for shedding heat and it works well with the full face Mainline. The feel is ultra-light and with DH rated protection. The visor flips up high enough to fit googles off your eyes and onto the forehead of the helmet if you wear your goggles that way when getting some air to your eyeballs. The seamless fit of Smith MTB googles goes without saying. The one thing I'd complain about is the chin strap. It's the tried and true basic double D ring w/ a snap. I know this strap is bomb proof, but I know there's some snazzy snap systems out there that can operated with gloves on. I probably just need some practice. That being said, the more high-tech the more problems... sometimes.

Took a bad spill in Whistler, BC at the bottom of a rock roll and walked away (ish) without a concussion. The helmet cracked and smooshed a bit, so it did its job and saved my *** from a much worse situation. Thank you Smith for making a great product. Just ordered a replacement in that wild pink color and got some new goggles for it while I was at it. Hope i don't break another one of these for obvious reasons, but if i do, I'll keep buying 'em. Cheers

When I took a tumble I rolled and managed to break all my fingers on one hand, wrist, injured both knees in spite of knee pads, skinned my shoulder and thigh bare, and had massive bruises on my hip and rib cage. And based on the scrapings all over the chin guard on this helmet I would have taken a beating to my face and side of my head, too if I hadn’t been wearing this model. My ears were ringing and I felt some nausea but I am so glad I was wearing this. When I was in the hospital the nurse told me one of the most horrific injuries she saw from mountain biking was a guy whose nose came off. Def recommended.I do wish the helmet had a quick connect for a chin strap instead of the loop and snap, and cinched down using boa or something to be a bit more snug - I’m ... MoreWhen I took a tumble I rolled and managed to break all my fingers on one hand, wrist, injured both knees in spite of knee pads, skinned my shoulder and thigh bare, and had massive bruises on my hip and rib cage. Def recommended.I do wish the helmet had a quick connect for a chin strap instead of the loop and snap, and cinched down using boa or something to be a bit more snug - I’m closer to a small than a medium but had to do the medium and it took a minute to take the helmet on and off each time. Works with a hydration bladder or snap bottle.
I ordered the Mainline MIPS after weeks of researching the right helmet, and decided on SMITH, due to its reputation and quality craftsmanship. And that’s apparently clear after receiving the product. However, it arrived with a torn box and small, but noticeable rub on the face guard. And it truly appears as if the item was resold after receiving it back as a return, which is disappointing, given that it’s my first SMITH experience, now dampened by this incident. It’s more a trust thing, than anything else: why sell an open box product as “new?” As well, why, knowing that I’m a first time buyer, would a company not want that experience to be the absolute best?Great MTB Helmet though! Extremely WELL MADE!!! Quality! Ruggedness, light on the head! I bought this helmet about a month ago, in the orange color. I was a tad nervous because some people had mentioned noise from the MIPS system, but I found that not to be a problem at all. This helmet is ridiculously comfortable, I felt safe and secure, and it has fantastic visibility - it didn’t encroach on my field of view at all. It’s really well ventilated as well, I live in the American southwest and I could feel the breeze nicely, perfect for downhill days. You can hear the mips but it’s not loud or distracting at all. It just sounds like a bike helmet. I like that the chin strap is a d-ring too like motorcycle helmets so it won’t come undone like a buckle might in a crash. It feels just as secure and safe like a motocross helmet, but lightweight and ... MoreI bought this helmet about a month ago, in the orange color. I might get some backlash here, but I may be the only one that hates this helmet.Pros:-Lightweight-Breathable-assorted cheek pad sizesCons:-No rear tension for a snugger fit-Chin strap is impossible with gloves on *prefer a quicker release like the Bell Quick Air chin strap-sizing is off, the med didnt feel secure on my dome and a small was too snug-i cant pull up my goggles for a quick breather, they flop right back into your faceI wore this helmet once on a longer ride and was so ticked the whole time. I fumbled with my gloves every time i wanted to take it on and off for a breather. And i know its not just me because my friend has this helmet and its annoying with the chin strap and gloves. Was in the market for a new full face as my current needed retiring. Scored this half off and was stoked seeing as it's a "premium price" lid. Comfort and fit is pretty good although I had a pressure point on my forehead. Ventilation is better than none but not what marketing hypes it to be. Like the chin strap and I prefer a D ring; much more secure and not as difficult to manuever as folks like to complain about. You won't see a buckle on a motorcycle helmet. Protection wise, it's really thin. I don't trust the DH rating on this and would not want to wrap around a tree at 40mph. Any full face, however, is better than a half shell. Teeth are expensive, ya'll. Ultimately returned it as this possesses the worst implementation of Mips I've seen in any helmet. Thought folks were exaggerating about the noise. No. They are not. It's horrible. After a week I couldnt take it anymore.Overall a decent full face (minus the cheap Mips) but a joke at MSRP. Just buy a Leatt gravity at $99; a little more weight and heat but a lot more protection and rotational dispersion to boot. If you need more protection, Walmart has a cheapy MX (DOT rated) helmet for $50.
I really wanted to like this helmet but... Not only does it run small (even though I am in the middle of their size range for a Medium) but their version of MIPS implementation is severely flawed! I know how MIPS works (and it works fine), I have a Lazer helmet with it. Lazer uses two identically shaped MIPS harnesses that slide against one another. SMITH, apparently for weight savings, only uses one which, GET THIS, slides against the inner foam of the helmet! Does it work? Functionally it would seem so BUT what now happens is you get this crazy loud squeaking noise as the plastic MIPS harness rotates within the helmet. There is NO WAY around this with their design. PATHETIC! Don't waste your money unless you're deaf!
This protected me well in a recent crash and I'm getting another (smith offers 30% off for crash replacements). It's nearly perfect and feels much more solid than the Kali full face I had previously. The only real flaws are that the mips is pretty annoying - it really does creak constantly at the slightest movements (seems to be worse in the hot/humid). The d-ring straps aren't ideal either. The only other complaint is that your ears are pretty locked in, so hearing outside noises is reduced (this also contributes to the annoyance at the mips creak). My old Kali full face had vents near the ears so hearing was completely unobstructed.Overall though, the quality construction and protection easily makes up for the minor annoyances.
