Tiffen 55mm UV Haze 1 Filter

The Tiffen 55mm UV Haze 1 Filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. This filter is especially useful when photographing at high altitudes or around bodies of water. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others. The UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur. Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings. Absorbs most ultraviolet light and reduces bluish cast of daylight. Clear filter provides no additional coloration or contrast, allowing you to pair this filter with others. General protection filter reduces dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching lens elements.

A Fine UV Filter

The filter has a good quality feel; not as good as B+W filters but there is a substantial price difference between the two. Personally, I do not believe in using filters solely for protection except in certain environments but, that being said, I have not yet noticed any image degradation due to using this filter. For what it's worth, digital cameras already have a UV filter over the sensor so the only time this filter will have any noticeable effect will be on film. I don't believe this filter has any coating so flare could be a concern but I haven't yet been a situation where it has presented itself; regardless, it would probably be best to use a lens hood with it (and even without it for that matter.) If I had one complaint, and this may be considered picky, the case that the filter comes in is pretty poor. It is much larger than necessary, has virtually no cushioning and allows the filter to bounce around while inside it. Again this is another area where B+W clearly has the edge but also, once again, I suppose you are paying for that consideration. All in all a nice filter and a very good value.

This Tiffen filter doesn't have an annoying anti-reflection coating. I had one of those before and quickly ruined the coating with a little cleaning. I always buy Tiffen because they are durable and made in US. The coated filters only transmit a very slight bit more light. And Tiffen filters don't degrade the image.

Good Wide Angle Filter.
8 November 2013

I've had this filter for several years now and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Absorb UV light while being optimized for a wide angle lens. That means that you won't have a vignetting problem at the edges of your frame. Which you'll probably have with a standard filter. Many reviewers here are complaining about not being able to attach a standard lens cap to it. Well no kidding. In order for this filter to work properly they reduce the height to prevent vignetting. Standard snap-on caps use the extra height to grab onto the filter. If not being able to attach a standard cap is such a big problem; I'd suggest you either find a push on cap. Or use a standard filter...and suffer the resultant vignetting.

I Definitely Recommend this filter
18 September 2017

I have been looking for a filter to take the haze out of the photos I've been taking from our new house. As we live across a river from our nearest large city which by chance has a mountain for a back drop we inherently get a large amount of haze. Especially on fine days, this filter takes care of that problem perfectly. I now do not get the white-grey saltwater haze that comes of the river or the blue haze that chokes out the mountain, it's brilliant!

Not a protection filter
12 January 2021

There is no coating whatsoever on this filter, so you cannot keep it on your lens permanently. It’s lack of coating will impede the performance of the high tech coating on your lens. Instead of this filter, rely on your lens hood for protection. This filter is only to be screwed on your lens when taking scenery pictures at 4000 ft. elevation and above, where UV light is more intense than at sea level. At reducing UV light in these conditions, it is much more effective than any coated UV filter. The filter material seems to be the same as the Kodak 2B filter, which cuts UV transmission at 400 nm to 19%. Do not use it when taking people pictures, as it tends to give as lightly jaundiced pallor.

Tiffen 52mm UV - Great protection for my lenses
21 January 2016

First, my hat's off to Adorama for another fast fulfillment and delivery of my order of 3 52mm UV filters from Tiffen! These are primarily used for protection on my lenses, and it give me peace of mind to have a couple extras, in case one get scuffed up or damaged while on my camera. I recently bought a Nikon 28mm lens which takes 52mm as do most of my other lenses. Tiffen is built with such quality, and are a a slim design, so they don't interfere with the wide angle. They have a great coating and what's best, is that I clean the lens and inside of the filter, then screw on the filter and forget about it! I keep these on the lenses all the time, and they do not interfere with normal everyday photography. With the filter always on the lens, I don't have to worry about the lens getting dirty or dusty, I just have to wipe off the outside of the filter and never detach them. The Nikon lens caps by the inside "squeeze" type or the outer edge "squeeze" caps fit and stay on just fine. If you have screw on lens hoods, there's plenty of thread to screw the filter on over the lens hood and put the cap on last. I recommend using the inside "squeeze" type lens when using a hood over the filter, so your fingers can pinch the lens off inside the hood. it's a great fit, and worth the $6-7 for this filter. Get them and buy extras in case you damage one or bang your lens while on the camera. Well worth the money and quick deliver!

Tiffen takes it!
25 May 2021

It is always good to put a UV or other filter in front of the lens.1. Keeping dirt, splashes and scratches off your lens surface should be a no-brainer.2. Tiffen is a known quality producer at a great price.3 If our sun goes nova, the UV protection should allow you to get the definitive shot at least a couple of picoseconds after the other shooters' gear has fried and died.Seriously, put a Tiffen in front of the lens. It has a wonderful, calming effect.

To Use or Not To Use a Filter

When I decided to buy the Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens I had no intention of adding a UV filter. Knowing that cheap (inexpensive) filters generally reduce the quality of images, the sharpness of the lens would be compromized. Of course one can always add a high quality filter but the cost of such a filter would be half to two thirds the price of the lens and if the purpose of the filter is physical protection, well it hardly justifies. When I bought that lens it came with this filter. Sure enough the degredation was noticable. The differences in the shots with and without the filter were obvious.Under indoor shooting conditions and in more even light the degredation is going to be less. Regardless, for any photographer who buys a sharp lens such as this 50mm prime, to add mediocre glass over it will result in compromised contrast and color saturation. For physical protection, the use of the filter may be a good enough reason for more casual shooters and no, it's not going to ruin your pictures. It's just not going to let the lens produce its best.
