Asics Gel Kayano 28...an actual better shoe!

I admit I was skeptical when I opened the box and saw these shoes lacked a tongue and instead used an elastic opening for the foot. More than once a shoe company has taken a perfectly functioning shoe and tried to modify it to "improve" performance, resulting in disappointment.I took them out for some easy medium runs (8 to 10k) and found no issues with fit and no stress on the usual suspects: knees...achilles etc. So to really test them I went out last weekend and did a back to back 27k Sat. and Sun. with only the usual fatigued muscles but no stressed tissue. The combination of the elastic upper with lacing really keeps the feet snug and stable in the shoe. Another nice feature is Asics makes the shoe pre rolled with the toes curved up so you don't have to break ... MoreI admit I was skeptical when I opened the box and saw these shoes lacked a tongue and instead used an elastic opening for the foot. Their superior cushioning & support have not only mitigated the plantar pain while running, they have also improved my cadence and reduced my running inefficiencies so significantly that my running heart rate has dropped 10 bpm since switching to the Asics. These shoes have restored my joy and pleasure in running and every morning I can't wait to put them on and hit the road.If there were not already enough benefits, I also love, love the Lite Show colors. I went with the Flash Red and they are awesome. I love these shoes so much I bought a second pair a week later so I have a replacement pair waiting for me once I've put 700 miles on the first pair. Thank you Asics for giving my feet a few more years of runs ahead.

It seems ASICS messed up their sizes again
29 April 2023

I remember that around 5-6 years ago ASICS somehow messed up their sizing and fit, and they disappeared from a lot of the good running shoes stores' shelves. They were actually hard to find back then. I switched to other brands, but they finally came back strong and I was happy to come back to ASICS.Now again, I find myself having problems with the sizing and fit, having to use a different size than I use on EVERY brand, including all of my previous ASICS, and having hot spots all around since the normal width isn't normal anymore. They are longer, they are narrower.I have not grown or changed weight. Maybe it is only this model of Kayano MK, which is the first ASICS I have had problems with since the previous meltdown, but is is annoying and frustrating to buy ... MoreI remember that around 5-6 years ago ASICS somehow messed up their sizing and fit, and they disappeared from a lot of the good running shoes stores' shelves. Kayano lover trying the MK version
12 September 2022

I've been wearing Kayanos for 20yrs and love them. I couldn't get my usual wide fitting womans shoe recently and was advised to look at the men's standard fit as they were the same. It was sale time and stocks low so I could only get the Kayano MK style which has an elastic sock like setup rather than a normal tongue. I'm so fussy with the tighness of my laces and I loved the idea so I was really hoping this style would work for me. Unfortunately, I had to return them. The elastic sock is quite high and was causing me discomfort around my ankle bone. I'd be happy to revisit the style if they made some modifications.Luckily, the Athlete's foot has a 4 week return policy so I'm able to swap them for the normal style. Overall, a great experience. While I'm at it....I would love to see some better colour options in the ladies wide fitting shoe. Often, they are boring colours like black and grey!Forever a Kayano lover! Philippa

Literal Garbage
8 August 2022

Longtime Kayano fan who is done with the brand after this experience. The heel in this shoe collapsed after three wears inside my house. It is evident by even merely touching the foam inside both shoes that the one with the collapsed heel is defective. The foam is literally neither full, plush in the same spots, or even gathered at the top, which why it collapsed.Asics claims this is due to “fit and feel” and stated that the collapsed heel was my fault for putting on the shoe incorrectly.I guess it’s just a literal miracle I’ve managed to somehow not collapse all the heels on all my other Kayanos that I put on precisely the same way without issue. After multiple successive quality issues, I’m done with this brand. Looks great. Fit not as good as regular Kayanos.

These are best looking shoes I've seen from Asics but they do not fit nearly as good as normal Kayanos for me. The elastic sock material is too tight and makes the bridges hurt after a while. Inside feels roomier than usual Kayanos and I don't get the snug fit and support that I usual get. Previous Kayanos and many other Asics Gels helped to eliminate foot pain that I get with any other shoes, but the pain was back immediately with these. I contacted the customer support about this but the support rep had very bad attitude and did not care whatsoever about my feedback to the shoes. She just wanted to get me off her back so she just said they don't offer refund or exchange and ended the chat without asking me. Superb Shoe
4 October 2021

OK, I've been wearing my Gel-Kayano 28s for about 2 months, having replaced the shoe's previous incarnation the Gel-Kayano 27. Good as was the Gel-Kayano 27, (and it was good!) this shoe is one hell of an improvement -- particularly if your feet happen to pronate (and boy, do mine pronate!).For me, the two biggest improvements are the toe box and the rear foot or heel support. One thing that gave rise to complaints with the Kayano 27 was that the toe box didn't hold its shape, that it collapsed or crinkled. That was also the case with my own two pairs. Within a few weeks the front of the shoes looked misshapen. Not so with the Kayano 28. Within a few weeks the front of the shoes looked misshapen. Not so with the Kayano 28. After two months of power walking (this 70 year-old does marathons) and daily wear the sturdy toe box has held its shape very nicely. So kudos to the designers for having sorted out that particular problem. Now for the rear foot support: for me that's been a game changer. The improvement has been such that I've been able to dispense with my ankle supports which I wore for years in order to prevent recurring tendinitis. That's been quite liberating and a testimony to the thought that's been put into the design of the shoe.Is there a negative? Well, yes. Nothing is completely perfect. And, here, my sense is is that compared to the Kayano 27s, the Kayano 28 has a little less of that wear resistant rubber in the area of the outside heel (which typically is where my shoes wear out fairly rapidly due to the severity of my pronation) and this seems to have caused the shoe to wear out a little faster. Notwithstanding, I still give this shoe 5 stars. I may have to purchase the shoe more frequently, but the benefits so outweigh this negative that it will remain my go-to shoe -- both for training and for everyday wear. Yes, in my opinion the shoe also looks real nice: good enough for daily casual wear. Well done Asics.

The best shoes for beginning and long runs!
16 October 2022

I am actually writing this for my husband since he is not really into social media! :-) My husband is a very active person in cycling and skiing but not so much into running. He has been trying to do some running in the summer months as it is easy to fit into the work schedule but earlier this summer, he has been complaining a lot that his knee hurts after about 5 km. He tried various shoes and said these have been by far the best ones. They are comfortable, supportive and he said he will not go back to any other shoes. He has also had no problem with his knee since he has started using these. Asics shoes tend to be a bit smaller. He is wearing one size bigger than his other shoes.

Worst Design. Worst Customer Service
19 June 2023

It is pretty clear that all Asics are not created equal. The Gel-Kayano is the worst design ever. A block of foam (yes, blocky, not form fitting) behind the upper heel that collapses to lower heel. Shoe becomes virtually unwearable unless you like chunk of material pushing into your lower heel.I have been wearing Asics for decades. Now, I try using their warranty one single time and they send email about how to wear shoes, replying to other issues and not the problem. Not honorable. So annoying to be treated so poorly.
