I run a fishing charter and regularly use this reel and have 30+ of them. I recently purchased PENN Fierce IV Spinning Reels and was quite disappointed with the product. Upon inspection, it looked like pieces were either not installed or had been removed by someone in need of spare parts. Unfortunately, I needed the reels immediately and didn't have the option to return them. The reel itself performs adequately, but the missing parts significantly impact the overall experience. For a brand like PENN, known for quality and reliability, this was a letdown. I hope this was just a rare oversight, but it has certainly affected my trust in the brand.

I bought the Penn Fierce Live Liner last January and was not able to use the reel until the weather warmed up in the summer. After unboxing the reel it immediately felt of poor quality and was extremely janky, it also had very poor gear meshing worse than even my lowest budget reel. To make the situation even worse my reel also arrived without a bearing cap which would leave the inside of the reel unprotected, this was however not a huge issue as being an avid fishermen and having owned over a dozen penn spinning reels in the past 5 years and used a extra bearing cap from one of those. Despite the ever growing list of red flags from this reel I still decided to try out this reel on some small bluefish in the 6-8lb range. After the very first fish the reels drag immediately gave out and I was unable to switch the reel off of the LIve Liner mode, once the fish was in I gave the reel a few cranks and fidgeted with the live liner, and the issue resolved itself however after the second fish something even worse happens, the reel became extremely hard to crank when the spool was at the top of the rotation which made reeling in a 5 oz weight a laborious task and a small fish impossible, rendering the reel totally useless. Overall I have owned over a dozen penn reels recently, from the old senators to the newer slammers, and currently own many baitrunners style reels that perform flawlessly. I also understand that this reel was a budget reel but for 120+ dollars I expected it to last for more than a day. I am extremely disappointed in the quality and craftsmanship of this product and would no longer feel comfortable using a Fierce on a large fish. I hope that my next reel is of typical Penn quality and that Penn can help me resolve the issue of me now having an mostly unfishable reel.

I live in Connecticut and fish Long Island Sound. I've caught a couple dozen False Albicore, Multiple 15lb blues and Striped Bass. The Albicore started running my line out. I tightened the drag and stopped them dead in their tracks. Haven't lost one fish yet due to reel failure. Casting Albie lures long distance is critical due to they constantly move. Reel is paired with medium lite 7 foot Fierce rod. The 1oz lures travel 75 yards with ease and no line discharge issues at all.

I have been using Sh***** reels for over 30 years. When they discontinued my favorite model I began to look at other brands. What attracted me to Penn was the website (excellent product information) and the quality of the reels for the price (very good value for money). I fish only freshwater (Great Lakes Salmonid species), even though Penn reels are marketed as saltwater reels, for me that means they are heavy duty reels that can take a lot of punishment and more than capable of handling hard fighting Salmonid species. The Fierce III is well made, sturdy, durable and has mostly all metal construction, the rotor is the only composite material component. The Fierce III is well made, sturdy, durable and has mostly all metal construction, the rotor is the only composite material component. The HT-100 drag is extremely smooth which I expected as it uses the same type of drag construction as my high end fly reels, performing great when Steelhead make quick and long runs. The retreive is smooth and the LiveLiner feature works extremely well, especially with Steelhead which can bite very soft at times. The LiveLiner has plenty of range of adjustment resulting very good sensitivity. In summary excellent bait fishing reel for the price.
I bought this and 2 other Live Liner Penn reels over the past 2 years. 2 of the 3 I use kayak fishing the other is a surf rod/reel. One is a spin fisher V and the other is a Fierce. Both used in the kayak have had the live liner drag system fail within the 1 year of purchase. I dragged my feet on a warranty claim on the Spinfisher so it is at a local Penn service center for repairs out of pocket. The Fierce is to be shipped back to Penn for warranty claim. It is rather disappointing as I thought it was a fluke on the 1st one that failed, but it seems to be a pattern of repeat with the live liner system. We always rinse rod/reels after every trip and do regular clean and lubricate on them. We always rinse rod/reels after every trip and do regular clean and lubricate on them. I do realize that kayak exposes them to more salt water splash, but under a year for drag system total failure seems substandard. I almost exclusively use Penn reels and LOVE LOVE LOVE my 3 conflicts and swear by them absolutely. Even some of my loan a friend lower end Penn reels (Pursuits) have held up fabulously, just not 2/3 of my live liners. Other than the live liner drag, the reels perform well.
This is my first Penn. I went with the 6000 and spooled it with 30lb. braid and paired it with a 9 ft. rod. Tested it in the surf last weekend. Casting and reeling was very smooth. Was able to cast a 1 oz. Got-Cha plug about 50 yards. Caught a Spanish mackerel… a huge fish, but the Penn just handled so much better than the cheap products I’ve always used. I’m not an expert angler, but I fish a lot and this seems like a very decent product in this price range.
I've bought 4 penn fierce 3 live liners. 3 - 6000ll models and 1 - 4000ll model. Out of the box all reels worked flawless. After 2 trips with one of the 6000ll, the live liner feature would lock up under pressure. Had to wiggle the spool to disengage the live liner. When freespooling, a noticeable pause would happen with every rotation. The second 6000ll has no "click" sound when the front/main drag is being pulled by a fish. The third 6000ll has a very loud "click" sound when the front/ main drag is being pulled by a fish. The sensitivity of the live liner between all three 6000ll's are different at their lowest setting. Now the 4000ll... the rear drag for the live liner has no "click" sound. I feel like the quality control is not being implemented 100% of the time. Too much discrepancies between the same model reels. I do love Penn products, but am surely leaning towards Shimano or Daiwa brands. I also have to mention that I've had almost the same problems with the fierce 2 live liners. I've also bought 2 spinfisher VI live liners and had issues with that style of rear drag for the live liner. Had to return those. I recently bought the new fathom low profile baitcaster reels and am starting to have an issue with line lay on the retrieve. Penn, what's going on? My shimano baitrunners and my shimano baitcasters have never had these issues and it's been yrs fishing with those. I don't want a response. I just want you guys to read and listen. Step it up because you're falling behind.
My friend Rue and I caught this Northern Pike when we went fishing! I was reeling my lure in at a medium retrieve speed far out when this Pike smashed it right in front of me! The PENN Fierce III drag just stopped him dead in his tracks. He didn’t stand a chance. Let him do a few thrashes then horsed him in with eas.But before our success out on the water I found this little gem (PENN Fierce III 5000) sitting on the shelf standing out from all the other reels at Walmart, there was one left and I HAD to purchase it. Got it for $89.00. I Love PENN reels in general and I really Love this little compact strong, tough, durable and powerful 5000 size PENN Fierce III spinning reel!I really like the all metal body, the color (it matches my Berkley Big Game Power Series ... MoreMy friend Rue and I caught this Northern Pike when we went fishing! I Love PENN reels in general and I really Love this little compact strong, tough, durable and powerful 5000 size PENN Fierce III spinning reel!I really like the all metal body, the color (it matches my Berkley Big Game Power Series rod nicely), I really like the HT-100 drag and carbon fiber drag washers in this powerful little reel. PENN says “HT” stands for “High Terminal” I think and that the carbon fiber drag washers can last 100 miles of drag before they start to wear. Which is incredible!I really appreciate the cranking power this little compact reel gives you because it allows you to really get cranking at a higher speed to apply the quick tight wiggly action in a lure that requires it to trigger the attack instinct in large predator and other species of gamefish. You can also smoothly and comfortably reel in lures of various sizes and shapes at a slower retrieval speed as well. This strong, durable and tough PENN Fierce III 5000 reel can strongly handle small, medium and larger size lures (and gamefish) because of the cranking power that this reel has. This little compact PENN Fierce III 5000 size reel paired on my 8 foot (2 piece collapsable) Berkley Big Game Power Series rod gives me great confidence in reeling in alot of different species and sizes of fish (freshwater and saltwater gamefish) and the occasional “B1G ONES.”I Love my NEW PENN Fierce III 5000 size spinning reel paired on my Berkley Big Game Power Series rod (8 foot rod 2 piece collapsable). I have my PENN Fierce III 5000 spooled up with 300 yards of 30lb Suffix 832 Advanced Superline braid. This and my 7 foot (1 piece rod) Ugly Stik GX2 setup (I’m gonna put a PENN BATTLE III 4000 HS on the GX2 soon) are my “jack of all trades” setups. They’ll be able to handle ALOT of small, medium, and large fish, and the occasional “B1G ONE!” I Love all 4 of my PENN reels (PENN Fierce II 8000, PENN Fierce II 4000, PENN Fierce III 5000, PENN BATTLE III 8000 HS)!YES! I would recommend PENN fishing reels to everybody! -BRODAAAY! WUD UP RUE!
This reel performed spectacularly in Costa Rica and is a rugged heavy weight reel. Live liner is a nice feature and doesn’t interfere with regular use. Ball bearings are extremely smooth and with a ten foot dead stick could cast way out into the ocean. All around good quality product. I’ll use this catfishing and see it as a lifelong reel.
I have several larger baitfeeder spinning reels for surf fishing, including a Penn Fierce III 6500 and an Okuma Avenger 8000 series. I was looking for something smaller/lighter but still tough enough for medium duty saltwater. I opted for the Penn Fierce IV 4500 series which I spooled with PowerPro 30lb braid, as opposed to paying almost double for a Spinfisher 4000 series with LiveLiner option. Very satisfied. Have caught blues on bait in the surf and some larger catfish in freshwater so far. Versatile setup.
