Drive failed on me within a year and a half. Recovery services for 12 TB drives are 7x the cost of this device. Was always a massive fan of G Drive HDDs but once they were bought out by WD they developed this mess. Frail and tiny AC power supply should have told me all I needed to know.DriveSavers has informed me of severe mechanical failures reassuring me that it was not due to water/ drop damage while mentioning that they receive “a ton” of these drives.Save yourself the immense stress, $3,600 for recovery, oh and $370 for the device itself.

This drive is not only loud during data transfer, but it makes a little clicking noise every few seconds even when idle. Online chatter suggests it's normal but if that's the sort of thing that might bother you, run away. Also the aggressive flashing of the G light when in use is another unnecessarily intrusive aspect of an otherwise functional drive. Hoped to use this as a Time Machine drive but it's way too annoying to leave on.

Pros:-- The drive will read or write at 250MB per second (if your USB port supports that speed, and if the other drive that you are using to read or write to/from the G-DRIVE also can run at that speed.-- It has a light on the front panel (the G lights up), when the drive has power. Although, some people might not like it, if they find it to be distracting.-- The light will blink when the drive is actively reading or writing.-- The drive has a power button on the rear.-- The drive feels sturdy. The cons:-- I purchased 5 of these drives, and sent 2 of them back (B&H was very accommodating). People are writing reviews stating that they stack them. Well, I suspect that those people do not keep the drives powered on for lengthy periods of time, or never touch the casings. When you stack these drives, they get hot -- very hot. Heat is the enemy of computer gear. If you want your drives to last, then you must cool them. I use a small fan, on its lowest setting, blowing into the rear of my 5-stacked drives. It is a very light breeze, and all of the drives run cool.Yes, the drives have a built-in fan. But heat rises (the casing is designed to dissipate heat). So when you stack the drives, eventually the built-in fan cannot push enough air. Not stacked, and the built-in fan is all you need. But stacked? Apparently the built-in fan is not designed to handle the additional heat build up.-- The drives sit flat. So they take up a bit of desktop real-estate, which is why stacking them (if you need more than one) is desirable. Perhaps they can be rested on their side? But they will easily tip over, if you do not secure them (their feed are on the flat side).Other:-- The data cable is 3 feet long. And you get only one data cable. In this case, it would plug into a type A USB port on your computer. If you want to plug it into a type C USB port, then you either should purchase this drive that comes with the C cable (same drive, different part number -- only difference is the cable that is included), or purchase an additional cable, which will be a Micro-B that plugs into the drive and C (or A) that plugs into your computer.-- The power block will take up more than one position on your power strip. I am unable to plug them in, directly next to each other on my power strips. I have to skip an outlet between the power blocks. But his is not too unusual for power blocks. So if you are short on outlets, you will either need another power strip, or use a small extension cord (from the power block to the outlet on the power strip).-- I have been using the drives for a few weeks. So I cannot speak to their long-term reliability.I also protect 100% of my computer gear with a quality UPS (uninterruptible power supply). So my gear never gets hit with power surges or other dirty power issues from the public utility. If you are not using a good UPS, then you will probably shorten the life of this drive, and any other computer gear you are plugging directly into your wall.Aside from having to return two (new) faulty drives, all are running without incident, and all are fast (for USB mechanical drives) -- 250MB sustained speed, for single file transfers (meaning one large file at a time). I have neither tested it for simultaneous file copying nor countless small file copying. But I suspect it will not flinch at such requests (although a good SSD is far, far better at small file transfers and simultaneously file transfers).I will probably be purchasing more of these drives.

Wouldn't even turn on right out of the box. Had to get a replacement. Be ready to add a 2 week wait time to your order in case yours is delivered and doesn't work.
I am a practically retired shooter/editor, both video and photography. For many years I used G-Technology drives which stood the test of time, so it was with some trepidation that I bought this drive after Western Digital had consumed both G-Technology and SanDisk. My needs have diminished enormously, with my personal media backups being handled by a 6 terabyte master and the backup spread over two older 4tb drives, all G-Tech. I week ago one of those old 4tb drive started clucking like an old hen and refused to mount. Time for a new 6tb drive. This drive seemed to be the only obvious choice and so far I am very pleased with it. Quick, quiet and well build, I have no complaints, I do miss a second port for daisy chaining but I am sure there is a reason for its ... MoreI am a practically retired shooter/editor, both video and photography. The drive is not going to get a lot of spin time so I hope it last as long as I do :)
Right out of the box it was simple as plug it in and go. This drive starts when you computer does with no set up procedure or special software. The outside construction is sturdy, clean and easily stackable with my over drives. Its is super fast when save over files and so far shows no problems. Very pleased with my purchase.
I've had great success using G-Drive external hard drives with my Apple iMac to backup my Lightroom images. Set up is very simple plug and play. This particular model comes with a Thunderbolt 3 cable plus a USB A cable for older iMacs like mine. I highly recommend this drive.
Does what I intended it to do. Only bug is that I have to manually turn on hard drive each time I start up my computer. Other external hard drives start up automatically. Perhaps I have some setting wrong.
I bought this because my university has stopped allowing alumni to use its free google drive unlimited storage and needed to download 20tb of data. I already have theSanDisk Professional 7.68TB G-DRIVE PRO STUDIO SSD for editing 4k videos. That thing is fast and quiet! This drive, while I knew would be slower, is much slower and very loud. Sometimes I feel like I am back in an MRI. I am obviously making a joke, but it does sound like one. I seen others make a comment about this and maybe it is only because I only use ssd drives, and not used to the sound, or maybe this is an issue! I have only had this one day.
Asset management is a HUGE part of my job. I purchased three of these drives and had zero issue transferring video files shot in 8k. This drive is a great investment.
